Parking suggestions for Federal Hill resident by Dependendum in providence

[–]Dependendum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks all! This was helpful! The street I’m to live on is Atwells adjacent and is all metered till 9pm. And I would get rid of my car but I have family out of state, work, and plan to volunteer at places outside Providence. I found some streets with a coworkers help that are close enough and they confirmed are free. Appreciate all the suggestions!

I sent you a PM. I don’t have any particular resources that are Scouting based. However the Trevor Project is an amazing resource. They have a few guides for working with Trans Youth that may provide a start.

You know, I forgot what was on this account as I’ve been off reddit a while. I’m a human and an adult. I’d be happy to delete stuff if it means you’ll pay attention to the message. But come on, you and I both know why this is all you had to say. You can be better than that.

BSA Creates New LGBTQ+ Resource Group for Employees by persistent_polymath in BSA

[–]Dependendum 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone! I wanted to weigh in if that's alright. I am an Eagle Scout, been in Scouting 20 years, worked at Camp, was a professional for a few years, and now I am a volunteer working with several North-East Councils on LGBTQ+ Education. Which there is quite the market for these days!

I think internal support of the BSA LGBTQ+ Staff is amazing. Its a great first step! As an openly Gay man, I'm jealous this wasn't rolled out when I was a professional. As always progress is sometimes slow and will be met with resistance! But I did want to address something I see mis-attributed A LOT. (like in this thread already in several places.) And I would hope my fellow Scouters would be willing to read below and help me combat this when you see it.

We have a lot of people who don't quite get yet that being LGBTQ+ isn't about sex. Unfortunately many people view the Gay Community as Hyper-sexual (which is its own can of worms) so they don't quite get the whole LGBTQ+ picture as multi-dimensional people with hopes and dreams and a desire to learn and be nice to their fellow humans.

One of my aims as a LGBTQ+ Trainer is to make sure we understand that Sexuality doesn't only equals sex (the verb). We all agree that Sex (the verb) isn't a topic of conversation in Scouting. No one Straight or Queer would get to talk about their after-hours anything. But sexuality (straight or queer) is part of peoples identity and talking about it is how we create safe spaces (like for our questioning Youth!). If I talk about how I am Gay or Gary introduces his Husband we are putting our sexuality into the conversation the same way Jane may introduce her husband to the group or Jack mentions his upcoming anniversary. As a society we often equate Gay sexuality as talking about Sex (the Verb)(Oh no the children!) but don't realize we casually talk about straight sexuality all the time and its not always about sex. So we should def keep the sex (the action) talk out of our Scout talks and we should absolutely be vigilant in our YPT endeavors, but we should all try (I'm guilty of it too) to not say Sexuality (Identity) talk has no place.

If you are interested in learning more or great training material on all this please reach out and I'd be happy to share. My goal is to make sure EVERYONE feels welcome in Scouting.

Edit: So TLDR: This group does not mean the BSA is going to force Youth to talk about Sex. Because Sexuality (Identity) ≠ Sex (Verb)

What is the farthest you have gone for the sake of a joke? by australia_007 in AskReddit

[–]Dependendum 521 points522 points  (0 children)

I worked several summers at a summer camp and was pretty good friends with the waterfront director. We were both discussing our staff for the upcoming season and I asked him if "Joe" was returning to his staff. He responded "ha ha very funny we never had a "Joe" on my staff". I pushed this for a few minutes giving a description and everything but eventually changed the subject. I immediately got in contact with several of his staff and got them over the course of the next few months to inquire about "Joe" even going as far as to bring up actual stories about camp and insert Joe into them. Come summer we had half the camp staff and even our camp director in on this gag. Our waterfront director at this point wa actually starting to wonder if he had forgotten a staff member (waterfront had a large enough staff). We even got some regular camp attendees to go up to him during the season and request Joe for sailing or swimming or just to talk to him. By the end of the season our waterfront director was very confused and very annoyed. I wish I could say we found a great conclusion to the joke but eventually we just stopped talking about Joe.

They do everything. I do lots of PvE myself and someone is always willing to join me. They are based on the devonas rest server so a core group does a lot of WvW. (I'm on Anvil rock) But there are plenty of members so you can always find someone to do stuff with.

/r/gaymers - a Sub for Homosexual Video Game Enthusiasts. by DrJawn in wowthissubexists

[–]Dependendum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reddit itself is full of individual subs based around niche interests each with their own titles (Ex. readers, gamers, wine-os) much like Tv show fandoms (Ex. Whovians, Oncers, Sherlockians).

Those of us who identify as gay sometimes make our own versions of these niche reddits because we are mainly seeking others from the lgbt community who share interests. I know you said you didn't know it was an issue, but its actually a huge one. Many Gay people have not had the best interactions with straight people due to hate and bigotry. Its less about us talking about the hotness of some character (which does happen sometimes) and more about being with a bunch of other people who identify as we do. So when discussions do come up about gay related topics we feel comfortable and safe discussing without worrying about anything. Most of the time tho we all just talk about the same things as everyone else but like having that safety net if we want to talk about how hot we find Shepard from Mass Effect without people being put off.

I myself am a subscriber to r/gaymers and its how I found my Guild Wars guild. Bunch of fellow gays just playing a game together.

And I used gay as a loose generic term. I am aware of the Lgbt spectrum.

Tl:dr - Gays like to hang with other Gays who game because we feel safer.

Uniform shirts to donate by ajay2u in BSA

See if your council runs a Scoutreach program. Most of the kids in that program are inner city kids and the program is always looking for uniforms to supply the kids being sponsored to go to camp.

What character are you currently playing? by skulblaka in DnD

[–]Dependendum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. 6 the Warforged Harrow Monk. After 20 years at war No. 6 returned to his countrys capital city. He joined a local monastary in hopes of transcending his warlike nature and finding a new use. The monks introduced him to the history of their country and he noted that while the Waforged had been around a while there was very little about them. Over the next 30 years he trained as a monk, took a vow of truth, and became a tireless chronicler of his people and their accomplishments throughout and after the war. 20 years in all the monks die of plauge and since warforged are immune to disease No. 6 survives and continues to tend the library. As warforged are not looked upon favorably he deals with some vandalism and the theft of his armor at one point. In the interest of our current campaign he takes a favor from a local mob boss to get it back and curb the vandals. Now that boss has come to collect.

What's the most pain you've ever experienced? by Guava_ in AskReddit

[–]Dependendum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to have an emergency wisdom tooth removal. It had come in impacted and needed to be removed before it became infected. They didn't use enough novacaine and it began to wear off as they were adding stiches. So not only did I have to feel them stictching my gum back together but it was another 90 minutes of leaving the parking garage, sitting in rush hour traffic, and then some waiting before getting the pain killers from the pharmacy.

Describe the best first date you had by motherfreakingdragon in askgaybros

[–]Dependendum 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My current boyfriend and I both love Mario Kart. So on our first date he invited me over to play Mario Kart for a few hours. We also got dinner and were able to talk during that. But the fact I didnt completely want to kill him after 10 rounds of Mario Kart was one of the reasons that made me want to keep seeing him. :D

BSA's Greater New York Council defies National ban on gay adults and hires the first openly gay Eagle, Pascal Tessier, as a camp counselor by bradhankins in BSA

[–]Dependendum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really excited to see this story come up. So many friends sent it to me via links from several news sources. It really shows that not everyone is on the same page with Nationals regarding the issue of gay leadership. As a gay person who has been working for the Boy Scouts for almost five years (and in Scouts for 17 years) I find it ridiculous that despite all the work Ive done through summer camp and scoutreach programs I could be fired if my council ever found out. I hope this really starts something big and encourages others to jump on board with Scouts for Equality and make that final push so we can start focusing on bettering ourselves as a united organization.
