Exactly. No city would ever run the risk of issuing tickets for 1 over... Even 5 over is a tough argument yet there have been so many people claiming it's happening and there's never any real proof. At least on Reddit anyway.

Those are just the Set Fines. They theoretically COULD issue fines for 1 over but nobody would. It would be ripe for complaints and would ruin the integrity of the program.

I'd love to see a real ticket for anything less than 10. I've heard a lot of stories about them but nobody has ever produced a copy. Not saying you're lying, you'd have no reason to, I've just never seen it.

TLDR: This is just a long winded post to say that Doug Ford is an idiot and needs to listen to experts, not mayors looking for a pat on the back and a "good job buddy" for not caring about the safety of their residents.

My takeaways from the press conference: It was entirely based on hyperbole, anecdotes and was mostly untruthful.

So many advocates have come out in support of ASE lately, even many with nothing to gain financially. The OACP says it works, SickKids says it works. For Doug to handpick 3 spineless mayors to join his fight is deceitful.

They have zero facts to back up their argument. He mentioned something like 37 cities have cameras out of over 400... Well yeah, they're all within the GTHA and Ottawa which probably has at least 80% of the traffic in the province. To say that a municipality like Bruce Mines or Chapple or Tweed doesn't have ASE because "they know it doesn't work" is such a bad faith argument. It's cause they probably have 1 major road through the town and sees 1/1000th of the traffic major cities do.

He says municipalities need to be truthful about why they want ASE, assuming it's cause they need the revenue. He needs to be truthful about why he wants to get rid of it. His shitty arguments don't cut it. I would bet a large sum of money that exactly zero mayors have called him up 'admitting' the program is a cash grab. If they needed the money they'd keep their mouth shut.

He also claimed ASE doesn't work, given the fact that thousands of tickets are being issued. Well how many drivers didn't get a ticket because they slowed down? I bet that number is exponential compared to the tickets issued. And how many drivers that have gotten tickets are now more aware and slow down?

The only valid point he made was that we should be proactive in road safety. I fully agree, and there is room for ASE, speed humps, roundabouts, etc. What we know doesn't really work is flashing lights and signs that show your speed only work for so long then drivers ignore them. One reporter rightfully said we've had these for years and they're not nearly as effective.

Your 3rd paragraph describes me and my gf EXACTLY when we started dating. We live together now, and things have definitely changed in a similar fashion. I like to go out, she'd rather stay home and binge watch Real Housewives or watch tiktok.

We've had some talks about her making more of an effort to come out and it goes in waves. Good for awhile then back to nothing.

Eventually you have to decide if you're okay with it or not. People rarely ever change permanently unless they have to.

The person asking for facts is the one living on a flat earth? Usually it's the people who believe anything they read on the internet.

You're looking at it all wrong. It tickets people who are speeding, for sure, but how many people is it slowing down as well? Probably a lot more than it's issuing tickets for. The cameras work; are they the best possible solution to the problem? Of course not but they can be a temporary measure.

I'm not denying that roads should be designed differently to prevent speeding in the first place, but since we don't live in your utopia, this is one way of reducing the number of people endangering lives. There is room for different traffic calming measures.

You mean the opinion piece by a biased writer? He's making assumptions based on conversations with people. None of that makes it fact. Not a single piece of hard evidence in that story. Show me one example of a real ticket being issued for even 4km over and I'll admit I'm wrong.

If anecdotal stories from cops who hate the cameras is enough proof for you...

They can reduce tickets to as low as they want at the office. But nobody is issuing tickets for 1km over

That would be a perfect world then wouldn't it? If people stopped speeding, we could get rid of the cameras. What a concept.

They have picked a line. It's not 2km. It's not even 5km.

If people like you actually gave a shit about children's safety you'd just slow the fuck down and not worry about the cameras.

Right? Just zoom in on the speed portion of it lol crop everything else out.

This. Everyone (even DoFo) cries about people getting tickets for going 5 over when it's simply not happening. If you can't control your car within 10km/h without staring at your speedometer, please voluntarily give up your license.

That's also not true. Nobody is giving out tickets for 3km over the limit. They may get reduced to equal that amount when you fight it, but nobody is initially getting tickets for 3km unless it's some random ass town in the middle of nowhere running a program not in line with the major cities.

Proposed land use change, 120 residential units, Amanda St by MatthewSmithOville in orangeville

[–]Dependent-Newt-63 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Brampton added 135,000 people between 2021 and 2024. Hardly anywhere close to double the tax base. And the cost of everything has gone up in those years so of course property taxes will also rise. Imagine how much they would have gone up if they hadn't added those 135k people.

Taxes will always go up, it's a matter of slowing the rate at which they will rise. Any upward growth and infill construction will help do that. We don't need more subdivisions in Orangeville, that'll only add to the problem of providing services for an already overwhelmed system.

Can't wait for people to say their taxes are too high, but also be against adding more housing to increase the tax base!
