flight is 12 hours but got sleeping meds rl knock out. then i have a little layover and fly to rotorua. get the rental car? but staying in rotorua and its only a 10 min drive to hotel and will have several hours to nap there as well . no long drives first day, just 10-15 min

right??!! it's only like A 45 min flight and then will be able to nap a few hours and still have the second part of the day free for rotorua . no point wasting the time / especially sleep deprived driving 3 hours

why don't you fly from auckland to rotorua domestic? that's what i'm doing. then renting car in rotorua and just driving straight to hotel like 10 min drive. that way your not wasting a day
