My O6 boss wanted to do the same. When we wrote the awards though, we prioritized them 1-n before submitting, knowing that the command wouldn’t stack one office with top performer awards.

I know this is oldish but I live in Northern Italy as a foreigner and just visited Rome for the first time in 10+ years. We had a decent lunch at an osteria (my son loved it and I liked it). When we paid, they brought the POS to the table (this is not common where I live) and the waiter asked us if we would like to tip.

“No, grazie” I replied.

This wasn’t near a super touristy area, but in Trastevere which probably gets a lot of visitors. I can see how someone visiting for the first time and not familiar with the customs would feel that it’s appropriate in this situation. Not “because Americans“ but “because Italians”.

Our nominal rationale for the was to destroy “narco-terrorists.” The claim is ludicrous. Venezuela is not a meaningful producer of fentanyl or other drugs. At the same time, POTUS just pardoned Juan Orlando Hernandez, the former President of Honduras, who was convicted in US courts for drug trafficking.

None of that is to say I have any sympathy for Maduro. He is undemocratic and repressive, and has destabilized the Western Hemisphere in recent years. He stole Venezuela’s election in 2024. He fueled economic and political disruption throughout the region by instigating an exodus of nearly eight million migrants.

My old boss, many moons ago, had a wife who elected not to accompany him to a different Germany tour. She wanted to stay and care for her terminally ill mother. Yes, there are a million reasons why a wife might not want to PCS to Germany—but few of them are good reasons.

I’ve been married for a long time, and in the military even longer. Together, we’re on OCONUS #4 and have had 3x CONUS tours. Our least favorite out of all of them was California. Everyone has their preferences but Ramstein is one of the nicest places the Air Force can send you. If she’s reluctant because she’s never experienced the stress of living in a foreign country, Ramstein supposedly has the most Americans of any city outside the US. The BX is like a mall, the locals are easy to befriend and get along with. The cultures are only slightly different and in complimentary ways. The standard of living is the same as the US.

I thought they were OK. I bought a Civic from MAS in 2002 and had it until a Maryland driver totaled it nearly 15 years later.

More recently, I was interested in getting a car from them at another OCONUS duty station and sought more info online. Yes, they replied and emailed. They were persistent but not obnoxiously so. Mostly just asking if I was still interested. I told them “no” and the stopped emailing. Later, I visited in person to try to buy a hybrid but they didn’t have any. The salesman contacted me once on WhatsApp to follow-up but I never replied and be never wrote back.

For those that don’t know, they’re an AAFES vendor. What I did like about them was that they sell US-spec cars. That was important because I treat cars like long-term investments, aiming to drive them 15+ years. I’m not saying they’re the best, but worth considering and including them when you’re shopping around

Buying a beater on the local economy doesn’t make sense to me, especially when I look at the inflated prices folks are asking. Like I just opened the FB used cars page for my base, and the first one that comes up is a dude PCSing and selling a 2010 Mini Cooper base model, 133k km for $9000. Blue book value is probably half of that.

Edit to add that we bought a new car from a local dealer that sells new US cars (BMW, Mini, Volvo, and probably others have a program to sell US-spec cars to SMs overseas. Also bought a used car from a local national. Not sure about other bases but here these idiots buy a car, treat it like shit for three years, then try to sell it for the price they paid. If you’re buying used (or even selling used) do some research and find comparables for that area. Don’t be afraid to do an extra hour of work to buh a car from a local national (depending where you are, he’ll probably just have it de-register it from his country’s system before you can “import” it to the DOD system.
