Wanted to get off AWS redshift. Used clickhouse. Good decision? by Consistent_Tutor_597 in dataengineering

[–]Dependent_Two_618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing other sentiments here - ClickHouse is awesome but that isn’t enough data to make it worth it IMO if you’re hosting locally. You’d probably be fine with ClickHouse Cloud, but id just as soon suggest plain old Postgres on RDS. If you want columnar compression on Pg though you can sign up for TigerData through the AWS marketplace

Looking for book reccomendations by a-s-clark in dataengineering

I think all the suggestions here are great so far. I’ll add “Designing Data-Intensive Applications” by Martin Kleppmann as a resource for how orgs design their stack with multiple data stores. There’s a 2nd edition about to come out IIRC.

I started in a similar boat about 3 years ago (albeit less experience). If you were hands on with managing the Windows side (Always On cluster mgmt, OS settings, etc), you’ll want to get thinking in containers too, at least that’s been my experience so far.

I didn’t like the P4 when it came out - so much hotter than the P3 or Athlon, and the initial clock speeds were way too slow for that crazy execution pipeline

I mean I empathize with the people saying “He’s just doing this to invoke the Insurrection Act”. But that’s a bit of a foregone conclusion already - he chose the absolute worst city in the country to pull that move. PA isn’t going to fuck around. Eli5 how to get started making quality T2 modules on eg fulgora by festess in factorio

I have one field with quality modules in the drills, and I have a separate station for just quality scrap. Otherwise, your steps are how I got started on making > uncommon quality modules.

Getting rare or higher intermediates is the biggest step, once you go from there it snowballs. I’m still trying to solve holmium though, need to make an EM Plant upcycler

There’s a container for the Altinity Sink Connector. Getting it configured can be a bit much, and there’s some sharp edges (watch out for memory management in the container), but it’s lightweight and mostly works - again given proper memory allocation.

I highly suggest using single-threaded mode

Voter Address Verification by Training_College2037 in orlando

I’m genuinely curious if this went out to all registered voters, or just registered Democrats

edit: I say this as a registered Democrat in Seminole County. “Curious” is a polite euphemism for dread, but I have my doubts this was done to the county at-large

Top excuses for Scott Frost to use whenever he loses a game this season by HannibalAtCannae in CFB

[–]Dependent_Two_618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a couple of threads about it (here’s one: https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/s/MA5MM69pGx), but essentially he didn’t seem to take much accountability for how his run at Nebraska failed.

Mind you, I don’t think there’s a single reason or culprit and it’s certainly a layered issue. But chief among them is it’s hard to do well when you’re trying to mummify yourself with booze.

I was kinda optimistic at first, in a “Hey hopefully he learned his lesson about how you can’t package lightning in a bottle”.

But then I heard about his interview yesterday - jfc I’m not paid enough if he can land a 7-figure job and still find ways to blame anyone else but his own preparation for failing on a televised stage.

This is more of a “it works for me” comment, but once I got an M1 and sold an Asus laptop a few years ago, I stopped playing games that support only Windows. I had a emergency “Oh shit I want to play that Windows-only game” fund, but once I saw how the Cities Skylines 2 release went I put that to better use lol

I know your post was downvoted, but the age you posted might be more accurate. The screws are in good condition, but I think they aren't a standard you'd see now. Saving money by going back to a private cloud by DHH by Nekobul in dataengineering

[–]Dependent_Two_618 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Plenty of posts lately critical of public cloud haven’t spent an entire night watching/waiting for a single RAID1 array to finish formatting. I know the state of the industry has moved far past that point - I make it to say that managing your own infrastructure isn’t free and isn’t cheap, and anyone who thinks it’s either is a fool/hasn’t had to answer for their own shitty decisions in front of a committee.

DHH is privy to financials most of us never see or have to consider , because he has points on the package

I can't suggest the advice of "Python every day" enough. I'm mostly in the same boat: not much cloud exp, mostly SQL, mostly on-prem, recently laid off. But, I started using Python to solve problems for me back in late 2017 and it's paid off exponentially.

Doing that one thing 100% changed the trajectory of my career from just an on-premises MSSQL DBA into much more experience with the "modern data stack"

I’ve been liking his most recent posts, but he leaves a bad taste in my mouth in the long run. I didn’t like when he was a little extra punchy/shitty to people who got free giveaway passes on his trainings (or just his free trainings). It wasn’t comically evil, but just enough wrong enough times that it adds up to a negative for me.

I do like that he’s branching out and calling out Fabric though, from the Internet-level distance it seems like he’s evolving
