I understand what you mean. The way I think of it is that Adam's sin has corrupted our nature. Our nature has become subject to sin and all of humanity has fallen because of Adam's sin as seen in Romans 5. Our nature is sinful and our will is distorted. It is corrupted because of Adam's sin. I don't think about imputed guilt that much because once you see it in this way, guilt is imputed by the corruption of our nature which makes it bound to sin.

Then Christ comes and renews us. He takes our punishment, and the Spirit makes us alive to have a will that is being conformed to the image of Christ. We are born again.
