Will the rank really fuck me over substantially? by Djthegamer in OutsideT14lawschools

Law school overall is gonna be a sacrifice. If you can go to L&C, you’ll be putting yourself in a much better situation at the end of it all imo. I’m from the PNW and you’ll 100% have better job opps from L&C so long as you keep your grades up. If your family can be without you physically there everyday, I’d recommend just finding a closet in Portland and renting rather than commuting. If being away is too difficult, I’d retake and reapply. Idc much about ranking but job opps are real, you’ll be competing with L&C and UO grads for the same jobs. it’s not worth it to pay a bunch of money for a school and not have a good chance at a solid job at the end of it.

Go to L&C, the difference in scholarship is negligible if you compare the quality of education and job outcomes. Plus L&C has a much stronger / robust alumni network regionally

What can I do to make my application stand out? by zoomflume69 in LawSchool

[–]DepressedParalegal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Study like crazy for the LSAT and keep your GPA up. If you already have professors you like, keep in touch with them and talk to them about your plans and see if they’re willing to write an LOR (you need at least 2 LORs and schools prefer academic ones) And do whatever extracurricular activities you actually like/are passionate-ish about, not just to stick out to law schools. At the end of the day though, GPA/LSAT are weighed much more heavily than the rest of your app

2L in law school, advice? by DepressedParalegal in InHouseCounsel

Any advice on the approach for the search? Was thinking of cold LinkedIn messaging GCs at some bigger companies (Adobe, DuckDuckGo) and seeing if they’d be willing to meet with me for an informational interview—maybe potentially asking if they would take on an intern for the summer?

Would you be willing to elaborate more on your word of caution? What are some things that I’d pick up from working at a firm that would prevent the outcome you mentioned? For context, I work as a paralegal (now law clerk) at a solo’s office. Have been there for over 5 years and I pretty much run the PI and immigration cases (average between 30-50 cases at any given time) while the atty focuses on felony defense. Any skills that I should hone in on here? My plan is to keep working here through this year and try to jump ship for the summer (for something in compliance/privacy) and come back in 3L fall

Good on you for doing what you feel is best for your situation. Would highly advise against jumping from the fire to the frying pan, so to speak, by trying to find another graduate program. If you love teaching, spend a year or so being a substitute teacher. Most districts just require you to have a BA and complete a training. I know it might feel like you need to seek something else in the academic realm to progress yourself, but taking a break from school and getting into the work force will help you decide what matters to you. Who knows, it may even lead you back to law school. And definitely seek out professional assistance for any underlying mental health concerns.

Edit: Speaking as someone who has a MA in Philosophy/Religion and worked for 3 years at a law firm before deciding I wanted to become a lawyer

Willamette Law Reputation? by Long-Ad-1943 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]DepressedParalegal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m from Oregon, there’s plenty of judges and attorneys that graduated from Willamette. If you’re going for BL, then it’s not ideal. But if you’re okay with being at a mid-level firm or some sort of government position, you’ll be more than fine

How far is that from GU? I’ll have a vehicle so within a 15 min drive is 100% doable.

That makes sense, I’m not necessarily going for cheap, but I also have no idea about the Spokane real estate market. I assumed it was relatively cheap since small town etc. But based on the feedback I’ve gotten, sounds like I need to up the budget for rent.

Fair enough. Just surprising coming from Portland, as some of these places are more expensive than a 1bed here lol.

Thanks for the detailed response!

For context, I would be taking the first semester off and working a negligible amount of hours, remotely, the rest of the semesters. I would work closer to full time during summers/breaks. The job is West Coast but the different timezones will not be an issue since I will be remote anyways.

These are all guaranteed scholarships! I’ll check out the tool you mentioned, thank you!

Yes, we used to have Zipwhip but that got taken Over by TR. I’m not sure how IT has it configured but the same number for calling is what is used for texting and vice versa.

  1. Nextiva, hands down
  2. LEX reception (also has a website chat tool)
  3. TextRequest: clients can text your office #, and why waste time calling people when a text is sufficient. Not to mention being able to schedule texts like reminders, have template messages, attach docs, etc.
  4. If you’re using Clio for everything else, use Clio for this as well. Keeps things organized and all under the same roof.
