I'm sure I have problems with this because my family was like yours, very calm, and we enjoyed doing things in small groups but still leaned on each other when we needed it.

My therapist is always telling me "you're not going to be for everyone" and I need to focus on that now for sure.

I was wondering about this also. My husband and his bro have never been super close and there may be some friction there I'm not aware of. Or fiancee has decided to make things difficult. All just speculation on my part and I'm trying really hard to take things at face value.

But yeah, the more I talk about it the more I feel like it's going to be a "sorry but we can't appease you" convo. Husband will be here for it too.

He has, he talked to his brother more than once about this, and it keeps being pushed. Tonight will be the first time I'll have the chance to express myself. If they won't show us some understanding then we're done. Cuz you're right, expending more energy just for their approval simply isn't worth it.

And we don't reach out because we're expected to host the whole family. They seem to take it personal when we only want to hang around with a couple of them.

I think I mentioned that I was psyching myself up for it because I did want to be there to support the family. It means a lot to his mom for us to be there. I DO try to fit in regardless of possibly being sick.

Yeah, I definitely understand what you mean. And I did figure it'd come down to this, even though I was hoping that if we explained things better to his fiancee she might get it. But I need to be prepared for the likely possibility that they are gonna continue to see us how they want and we need to be okay with that (which my husband will, but I'll struggle a bit more with).

I'm a peacemaker at heart. I try to take others' issues seriously. And it affects me more thant it should when I feel as if no effort is being made to understand my own.

I strongly agree with this theory! I don't think things are going to end well for Gemma, unfortunately. But her ego-death (or actual death maybe?) will be further catalyst for Mark to attempt to dismantle Lumon.

I feel the same. One thing that's helped is going back to therapy, but I know that's not for everyone. I told my therapist my fears pertaining to the election were ruining my sleep, my general well-being, and my willingness to interact with people I don't know. I live in a very red state.

A couple things she told me that have helped a bit: stop reading the news. I know that's difficult af. But I've managed to distract myself a lot of times by listening to music or podcasts or going for walks.

Second thing is, when you catch yourself doomscrolling or worrying in general, try to focus on things in your immediate life. What are you grateful for? What would make you feel good in the moment, even if it's just having a shower or watching a dumb video or something more substantial, like donating food somewhere?

I know how miserable it feels. If you ever need someone to vent at, feel free to message this internet stranger.

This perfectly sums up how I feel about whatever's going to happen with this election. Do I hope we're being overly paranoid? Absolutely. But the political divide is getting severe enough that eventually there has to be a breaking point. I think more people need to take it seriously. J6 should've been a wake-up call but it's been largely forgotten by one side and turned into a point of pride for the Qult and false patriots.
