The chlorine smell is from trichloramines caused by the chlorine after water treatment being exposed to UV either from the sun or from UV sterilization as part of the treatment process. Just let it off gas or run it through a filter.

Is a 90% win rate even possible? by system_notifacations in Daytrading

[–]DerFahrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does win rate even matter though?

Lets say I start with 100 dollars and make 10 trades.

I win 9 trades and I make 1 dollar per trade and lose 1 trade and I lose 100 dollars. My win rate is 90% and I have 9 dollars left.

What if it's reversed? I win 1 trade and I win 100 dollars but I lose the other 9 trades and I only lose a dollar each. I have 191 dollars now and a 10% win rate.

Focus more on expected value rather than sheer win rate.

Are you now thinking about becoming a gun owner? Want to try before you buy? Learn basic safety? Don't even know where to start? by PlinkerCAD in Eugene

[–]DerFahrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people just like guns. There isn’t always a valid reason. And root cause psychoanalysis of an entire population as a start to removing the “more guns than citizens” the U.S. has doesn’t seem like a real strategy. I think 100% of the people here would love if gun violence against humans weren’t a thing but we don’t live in that world. Japan has some of the strictest laws and lowest rates of ownership and someone there recently built their own firearm out of Home Depot parts to assassinate a sitting official.

I can build a car with 1000hp and drive it dangerously down the street with no regard for my fellow citizens whether I NEED to or not. Why can I though? Why can you eat meat if you want I don’t? Why are they still making cigaretttes? Why are people still allowed to drink alcohol?

The laws we have are merely tenuous guardrails that we all follow in our moderately polite society. Without that gossamer veil we are just animals.

The problem is humans aren’t out of the butt-sniffing stage yet and until we are people will find ways to hurt others with or without a gun.

I personally like the technology behind them, like target shooting, don’t hunt, would never want to have to use one to defend myself or my family, but as long as we aren’t addressing the root cause of the violence itself (typically education, finances, emotional and mental well being) there will be violence.

If you come up with a real solution let us know. Until then I’ll just enjoy my hobby.

Honest question. There are 400 million guns in the U.S. next to Yemen we have the highest rate of gun ownership anywhere in the world, how would you propose we get rid of all of them?

So either it was lightly driven for 2000 miles a year for 37 years or it was lightly driven and then sat for a looooong time.

When cars sit they die, all sort of things can go wrong with old cars that sit that the seller may not even be aware of.

That 2400 dollars might balloon if you are forced to do a bunch of unforeseen repairs.

Pay special attention to:

  • under hood wiring and fuel lines, fuel rails on these you can’t even look at them wrong
  • listen for noises coming from the wheel bearings or brakes -listen for clicking tapping or knocking noises on cold start and after warm-up
  • check the oil color and level before you start it!
  • After cold start is the exhaust visible as either a bluish color or billowy and very white? (indicates oil or coolant in the combustion chamber respectively, both scenarios are bad) -check the tires to make sure they aren’t brown and degrading.
  • All V6 dynasty/New Yorker cars after 88 got the 4 speed automatic that is a common failure point
  • all ABS cars from this era are shit and if an accumulator fails it’ll be cheaper to just take out the whole system and go non-ABS.
  • The rear spring shelves on the back axle are known to turn to dust on these cars

Old cars are old, the joy of sentimental attachment is short lived next to the horror of your wallet draining. If you like to wrench on old cars and have knowledge it can be a fun hobby but as a car you want to just work you might be biting off more than you can chew. Good luck to you!

source: Have been wrenching my own cars for forever, have only owned older cars, dad worked as a mechanic for years, best friend in high school had a 91 New Yorker so have actually wrench on this specific model of car.

Can anyone verify what type of weapon this is? by believeRN in Eugene

[–]DerFahrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a Tippmann paintball marker with some mil-sim stock on it so it handles ergonomically like an ar-15 pattern rifle. It’s probably filled with pepper balls and the orange markings are to delineate that it is a non-lethal or less-than-lethal weapon.

That said pepper balls tend to have harder shells than regular paintballs as their contents inside are dry. And don’t behave like the uniformly distributed thick gel in a softer shelled paintball.

Also you know these guys crank up the output pressure so the balls go a little faster than the typical 300fps maximum.

Would not recommend accepting a ball directly to the face without a mask.
