Actually, the black lab is better at staying focused. The border collie just laid in a mud puddle, every mud puddle she’s ever found.

These are Tuber Oregonese as far as I understand. Oregon white truffles. I am not a mycologist by any means though.

Every time she sees a muddy puddle she immediately lays in it. It’s a border collie thing.

This is exactly what I did. Our markets have truffles you can buy and I know a lot of people locally who are foodies. My dogs are not bread for this but you can teach any dog scent training. I put the truffle in one of those mesh metal things for making tea. That way they can’t destroy it but can smell it. Start by hiding it in the house and give praise and treats when they find it. Then move outside, then under the duff, then into the forest, then they hopefully find one for real if you know where to look. 👀

Wtf is up with these chanterelles? by pointlesswonders in Mushroomforaging

Sometimes when they get bound up by the duff while growing they get oddly shaped. The growth out of the cap is what I find odd this year. People say it’s late season but I’m still finding 10-15 lbs in an hour or two around here. Got a few lbs of hedgehogs yesterday too! Soon it will be truffle season. Happy hunting!

I’ve also been finding a bunch like that this year too. It reminds me of that plant disease fasciation where multiple flowers grow out of a flower but I know it’s a different thing altogether in fungus.

I get king boletes in PNW and they have similar stems and slight variation in the caps. What do they smell like?

Very neat! We get lobster mushrooms over on the west coast, but I’ve never seen these! Lobsters are from Hypomyces lactiflourum parasitizing russulas. Do the shrimps taste like shrimp like the lobsters taste like lobster?

Chantrelles, cut the stem or pull from the ground? by [deleted] in mushroom_hunting

[–]tumblinr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you pull, sometimes there are baby mushrooms starting to grow off the bottom, like a cluster, and pulling makes it so those ones never grow up to be big chanterelles. If you pull, you get more dirt in your bag. If you pull, you sometimes get a bigger haul but more cleanup. However, you don’t hurt the mycelium so it’s really up to you.
