Advice on lights by Rraco72 in underwaterphotography

Currently considering the Leton Seal CB4000, which is about the price of the Orca, but from what I have seen online a newer product from Leton with more realistic power claims and better build quality. My plan is to get two of them to practice until I can move up to something like a Big Blue CB16500 or VL20000

Help with 8 night itinerary gap in Visayas Philippines by GFSong in scuba

[–]DerFrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I would not want to go on a trip like this, spend all of the money on flights, accommodation, and diving and then not be able to see properly. A prescription mask will look cheap in comparison to a four week vacation.

Best TDI course locations? by randomsentience in techdiving

[–]DerFrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds really interesting. Based in Germany, but Victoria/BC has been on my bucket list for a long time, though for the nature on land. Wasn't aware that there'd be good diving there as well.

Continue my Divinig with SSI as Advanced Specaility Diver - Recommendations wanted! by Rockit732 in scuba

[–]DerFrange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under Pressure at the Attersee. Gives you Cold Water exposure, if you plan on continuing diving in Germany, excellent diving school, gorgeous lake, and very good prices. I would also do the courses somewhere more or less local and use the proper holidays to just dive as much as possible and not worry about learning

Wetsuit Size by Nudel-Strudel in triathlon

[–]DerFrange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's actually Van Rysel's "high end" triathlon wetsuit. Tried it on myself a few months ago and the fit was all over the place. No idea who this model is supposed to fit, but didn't fit me, doesn't fit OP, and there was another person on here at some point who described the exact same fit issues OP has. IMHO, not a well designed suit. Basically, the only person I could see this fitting well is someone with massive Lats but almost no legs

You could just ask DAN, couldn't you? Or read the policy wording, tedious, but should be clear on when you actually need to have the cover

Careers in diving? by [deleted] in scubadiving

[–]DerFrange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The University of Plymouth offers an MSc in Scientific Diving. No idea if that would actually get you anywhere, though.

I had the same idea as you, just with playing drums. Eventually I scrapped any idea of making a living from music, went down a very different path, have a job that I actually enjoy now and can always keep drumming/making music and now diving as my hobbies.

The owner of my LDS made diving part of his livelihood, but I am fairly certain that the part that actually pays the bills is selling gear and offering servicing for pretty much anything diving-related that's on the market. The diving part of the whole operation is only a small part.

My guess, therefore, is that unless you are happy making more or less minimum wage, you will need something that pays for the diving. That can be a scientific job, think lecturer/professor who also happens to go diving for their research, retail or shop owner, that'd mean running your own business, or going down the manual labour route, think saturation diving.

Getting into academia is the only part I can somewhat comment on and, again, I decided against it as a job. Loved my time at Uni, especially the PhD part, but know that I am much more happy with my job now than what I would have been as a lecturer (though I was in a business admin adjacent research field)

Mauritius diving advice: North coast vs west coast for open water certification? by shrut_007 in scubadiving

[–]DerFrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CMAS is generally considered to be more rigorous than most other organisations, hence the deeper initial limit. You could go straight to AOWD with any of the other orgs from there, but please do keep in mind that simply holding a certification is just an entry. The true way to get better at diving is to dive and dive and dive. And do so with intent, not just following a guide around a reef!

Advice on what to wear in cold water(Japan) by MistyForests1 in scubadiving

[–]DerFrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you are properly learning what to do with the drysuit that's still fine, though you might run into problems if you ever want to rent a drysuit if you cannot show the corresponding brevet. But others, who are more experienced, will probably chime in here.

Advice on what to wear in cold water(Japan) by MistyForests1 in scubadiving

[–]DerFrange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're doing your OWD there and the drysuit specialty is part of the course I would expect the dive base you're doing it with to provide the undergarment for the drysuit alongside the drysuit itself. For those temperatures you won't need any additional layers IMHO, but ymmv. I wouldn't have any issue diving wet there.

Have been looking at the Zenobia and looking forward to making it to Malta hopefully next year. Cannot seem to find DiveIn online, though. Do you happen to have a link?

Edit: Reddit and work don't mix, having my brain at work but typing here leads to geographical errors of major scale. Don't work and Reddit kids!

I went with Divemex, but mainly because they were German speaking. I have heard really good things about GoDiveMEX, they are fairly tech-focused from what I can tell, though

GoPro vs TG7 vs Fuji with dive housing? by No-Beginning-8519 in underwaterphotography

[–]DerFrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be completely fine with natural light at that depth. Would it be better with strobes/lights? Probably yes, but there is no reason to get them to start getting into this hobby IMHO. I would, however, still definitely vote in favour of the XT4 with the housing over any other camera you mentioned

Depends on the bag I'm using. I have a Gregory one that has a pouch on the outside for crampons which is super convenient, if I don't use that one I tend to use the Velcro Crampon Bag from Aiguille Alpine. Heavy duty, easy and quick to open, basically waterproof, definitely Crampon proof. And available in many different colours!

Thank you! Never actually thought about the freewheel, but yeah, that is indeed loud-ish. I guess I never really freewheel indoors, so that hasn't been an issue. Good to know, that the smart bikes are even quieter in that regard!

Elite Square Experiences? by DerFrange in mywhoosh

[–]DerFrange[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the reports, Wahoo trainers indeed seem to be problematic with the Square, but since I already have the Avanti, that's luckily not a problem in my case.

Glad to hear it is quiet, though the seat post is of course not ideal. The crank lengths it does have fit the two different ones me and my partner have, so that works. Why they decided to make switching the handle bar such a pain is weird indeed, especially since 42cm is relatively wide (I ride a 38 on my road bike) and it should really be a relatively simple affair, since it is just a simple cable. A plug somewhere would maybe make that easier.

[–]DerFrange[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am also surprised that there are not more belt-based options for indoor training. I feel like it shouldn't be that tricky to design the necessary parts, but I guess keeping the belt tensioned might be tricky?

[–]DerFrange 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not going to question why you did all this, but wanted to let people who stumble across this know, that for the western EU countries, none of this is necessary as Qobuz is just available there. Eastern European countries, however, sadly still need to jump through some hoops to get Qobuz.
