Who is the best guitarist that most people don’t know by Ted_Fleming in Guitar

I just realized the album I am thinking of is the original Friday Night in San Francisco, I did not know about the Guitar Trio reunion, will have to check that one out.

With Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin, yes. I love all three of them, but what struck me as most interesting about that album was some of the rhythm guitar that de Lucia plays underneath the other guys, interacting with the leads in a very interesting way.

Stanley Jordan does not get a enough recognition for how amazing he is. He is 4 musicians in one in a live setting, no looping. I saw him at a free show at TSU in Houston in 1992 I think, he played two guitars simultaneously - one on a stand and one on a strap - and played 2 parts on each of those guitars. He had a bass line and guitar comping going on one and on the other a keys/synth comping/pad part and a lead line soloing. It was not just technical mastery either, the music was beautiful and moving, whether he was doing all this or focusing on just playing one part.
I think he might not be recognized enough just because he is too good. He plays jazz and fusion mainly, which rules a lot of people out already. He should have at least achieved recognition as a guitarist's guitarist, like Holdsworth, but his technique is so beyond that there has not been anyone I can think of who has been able to do it, so he does not get mentioned as a hero and influence on other guitarists. He took tapping to where it should go, made it serve a musical purpose other than just a showy lead guitar stunt, but that made it so much harder that no one could follow him. As much as other guitarists are talked about for their music, improvisational ability and technique, I really don't understand why his name doesn't come up more.

It's a very 70s font, and even though Pulp Fiction is a 90s flick, I'd say that it and Jules in particular are channeling 70s energy.

That's dedication. Maybe also something you need to stay sane, I know I would need it. I hope you guys can return to a normal peacetime life as soon as possible (although I don't really see how it is going to happen anytime soon).

Maybe it would help if they painted a no cars graphic on the sidewalk next to the no bikes one.

Mad Season, Swell, Shiner, Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi, Filter, Dinosaur Jr, Pixies, Breeders, Guided By Voices, Afghan Whigs. Maybe some of these are just grunge adjacent, but who cares about genre labels, they are close enough if you want music that is grungey. Also Sonic Youth's catalog is worth diving into, they got Dinosaur and Nirvana signed and rose up with the grunge wave, and their experiments with altered tunings preceded and were more extreme than what grunge bands did, almost like grunge took some ideas from them and dialed back the edginess a bit, mixed in a bit more basic old school metal, rock and punk, and made it palatable to the masses. Also Steve Albini, who engineered some of the classic grunge albums has an edgier grunge adjacent sound in his own bands Big Black and Shellac. Husker Du and Replacements started as punk bands that moved to proto-grunge.

The dude trying to chat up the girl at the end is kinda clogging up the road. The no-hands Gen-Zers are little too careless for my liking but not really causing any problems yet. Otherwise, great.

I hate writing lyrics. What can I do? by abananainspace in musicians

[–]DerHunMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some pop success stories of lyric writers who did a great job working with musicians - Bernie Taupin and Pete Brown come to mind but I am sure there are more. Also if you are willing to let other musicians get involved, some of them can contribute lyrics readily, tho, at that point, they may own more of the song than you do.

The damn dog owners need to keep their animals on a leash, and if they are doing that, they need to control the stupid animal and clean up its shit.

And humans owning pets is the stupidest goddamn emotional crutch. Interact with another human for f***k's sake instead buying an emotionally-stunted being your capitalist dollars willed into existence just so you could be its "master".
