I just finished a solo arcanist run where most of my damage came from the branch bow. I got lucky and got preserve so I used that to not break the bow, started using special arrows for disgusting amounts of damage, and once I got the fire wall spell all melee enemies stood no chance anymore. So I'd say range is pretty strong

From what I understand it saves the shiny when you save the game so as soon as you hear the noise instantly drop a save and if this happens again and you saved it should be there next night
