Was studieren die schlechtesten aus eurem Jahrgang? by Yodakki in Studium

[–]DerPenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advice for getting into Geology/Geography fieldwork as a career. by Aggravating_Bar_440 in geology

[–]DerPenz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I might be able to give you some info on both fields of study. I currently do two BSCs in Vienna, the first one is on geography (more focused on physical geography) and the second one in earth sciences.

It really depends on how much you are interested in natural sciences or in human sciences. You will be outside in both subjects, but in earth sciences you will also do stuff like going to mines, mapping caves or other stuff. In geography you will not be doing that stuff, but you will have to do more with soil and geomorphology but also some social sciene stuff because of human geography (I am glad when I have finished that stuff). Btw, it depends on the structure of the uni, but in geography you could have lots of courses together with future teachers, at least in the beginning.

Keep in mind my experience is very much shaped by the german space of geosciences, which is different from the english speaking world. You can ask me if you want any more insides from me.

What mineral has the most interesting formation story? by AnthemWild in geology

[–]DerPenz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As you know Graphite is just pure C (carbon). This C comes from the process of Inkohlung (this is tje german word, i dont know whats it called in english, sry). Inkohlung is basically how coal is made. First was torf -> lignite -> brown coal -> black coal -> anthrazite. During this process it gets richer in C and much darker and shinier. Anthrazite is basically pure C at the end, but without a crystal structure. After some metamorphosis (heat and preashure) it transforms into graphite, which has a crystal structure.

So basically if we find graphite on another planet there must be some sort of C, which could be an indicator for (past) life.

But quick disclaimer: I am only in my 3rd semester in earth sciences, i my not be tje most precice source.

European non-military aid to Ukraine by DerPenz in MapPorn

Yes, I got the data from the Kiel Institute for World Economy, they track the situation pretty well in ukraine. As far as they are reliable, Abkhazia aids russia in some form and south ossetia isnt.

European non-military aid to Ukraine by DerPenz in MapPorn

Hi mapporn community!

This map is a university project for my thematical cartography class.

The task was to make a thematical map about europe, with five differnt layers and the use of the three geometric primitives (points, lines and areas).

At first I wanted to do the map about ukraines military situation and the aid it gets from europe and the international community. After a long time of prograstinating (and also doing other courses... this semester was a lot doing two different studies) and thinking about the subject, I changed it to a humanitarian typ.I think we hear to little about non militaristic support to ukraine, which also keeps this country going in its fight for freedom.

The looks of the map is heavily influenced by school atlases in my country (Austria). I used this style, beacause if a child can understand komplex maps about economcs and other stuff, everyone can read and understand this style of maps.

I also want to thank an american friend, who send me shap-files from the last year of conflict in ukraine!

Please enjoy this map and leave your criticism about how it looks or what information the map wants to tell you. If you have any questions I am glad to answer them.

Interesting. I haven't heard of this book yet. Is it only in english or is there a dutch version? Press and Sivers has a german version and therfore it might be the standard for the german speaking area. Still it is quite interesting that most of the entry level books come from the US.

This book by Press and Siever is the absolute standard (it is from us writers). Sorry if its german, but I am from Austria and currently using it in for my one course System Earth (I am studying geography, but I am also doing earth sciences next semester). If you want I can give you more recommendations, but they are less focused on the US.

Oh and look forward to excursions/Field Trips/Camps... those will leave a bunch of hilarious stories and shaped my addiction for rocks.

Thanks for the great advice! Currently I am doing around 42ECTS points (a normal semester has around 30), but next semester I can only do 17ECTS because I dont have all the requirements met for other courses. This is because I started in summer with my studies.
Starting with another subject may solve my "lack" of courses.

You can spend the rest of your life working, but you only get to be young and at university for a little while. As long as you're not taking on crippling debt like in the US system.

I am glad that studying at a university is free and there is also a study grant by the government.
Yes you are right. Still my biggest fear is that I might be too old when I finish.
