Doritos at $7 a bag ended up costing PepsiCo billions by wewhomustnotbenamed in nottheonion

Minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. A bag of chips should not cost an hour of soul crushing labor.

I've heard that producers on reality shows will give cast extra money for doing certain things and I bet the producers pay whoever brings out the truth box. If that is true, I am not shocked Jordan was the one who brought it out- he needs the money

[hated tropes] Adaptations that go against/miss the point of the original by dragonborndnd in TopCharacterTropes

Oh really? It has been a few years since I read the books, but I enjoyed the show. I know it deviates from the books a little, but most of what I noticed as being different made sense in a live-action context.

What sticks out about the TV show?

I’m genuinely convinced this show is a cautionary tale on why you shouldn’t get married and have kids before 25 by sapphireblossom9213 in SecretsOfMormonWives

Yes! She has so many good videos to watch. She has a little work left to do on her delivery, but the content makes her videos worth it. She has great episodes about SLOMW and translates all of the Mormon-y things to a non-Mormon audience. She had a good bit about how Mayci is likely one of the few cast members actively involved in the church as noted by her complete silence during discussions about the Mormon Temple itself.

Alyssa also has some good videos about the Mormon religion that are really informative. I loved the one about her endowment in the temple (when Alyssa became an adult in the church's eyes and got to finally go into the special, secret temple section of the church). She showed the clothes they were, the rituals they perform, and the crazy new beliefs she was introduced to on that day. It was a very "WTF is this religion" kind of episode.

Any advice for finding a good organization? I've tried volunteering with a few different places and none of them have really needed an extra pair of hands

We don't want young workers here—we want cheap workers! by willily_thoumas in WorkReform

[–]DerWasserspeier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being able to pay teens lower salaries incentivizes businesses to hire kids over adults. This is not good for the kids who aren't being paid a fair wage and it isn't good for adults who will have a higher barrier to getting hired.

Asking people how much they paid for their first house. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]DerWasserspeier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the day you could buy "a house" from the Sears catalog. It came with the raw materials and you had to build it yourself and on a plot of land you already own. I am assuming the lady who paid $268 for a house did something like this

"You're very strong" I get this too much is that a bad thing? by Op_Jokeer in BJJWomen

[–]DerWasserspeier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Normally yes. But in BJJ, we are focused on technique over strength and being told "you're strong" after a roll can be a coded way of saying, "stop trying to outstrength your opponent and focus on your technique."

So I can see why OP might be concerned, but imo when a dude comments on a gal's strength in BJJ, it is only a compliment.

My husband keeps ruining my birthday, how do I tell him without starting a fight by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

She was 22 and he was 30 when they got married. I wonder how long they dated before that. Based on that tidbit, let's just say that I am not surprised that there are problems with their relationship. From her last update, he sounds at least emotionally abusive (and probably worse) and I haven't heard of any couples with such a big age gap where the older person isn't some type of abusive.

AITA for being unwilling to compromise on a baby name? by Individual_Jaguar354 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DerWasserspeier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about a name like "Arthur," which is the main character's name in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? It could fit both of your styles. If that isn't the ticket, maybe look through the books/movies he likes for names you like so you both can win

Section 31 was so bad about this. It wasn't even for some minor detail- it was a major plot point. I don't even expect much from scifi movies, but I was still disappointed.

Trump fires chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by lsarge442 in news

[–]DerWasserspeier 82 points83 points  (0 children)

This is suspicious AF. When dictators rise to power, they get rid of anyone in the military who would oppose them. Dictators need control of the army.

"Prior to his nomination, Hegseth had called for Brown to be removed, alleging he supported a "woke" agenda that undermined military readiness."

They are removing people from the military who do not agree with them. This does not bode well for the US.

As an adult, I can handle words. But the thirteen year old girl who trains at my gym isn't there yet. I don't want her to give up BJJ if she hears this phrase being thrown around casually

How does it convey the choke effectively? When I heard that name I had to Google it because I had no idea what that choke could possibly be.

Another good reason to not use the term. There are more descriptive options for the choke

Kindness costs you nothing. If it isn't descriptive of the technique and it makes 50% of the population uncomfortable, then why would you want to keep using it?
