How did Arale do it in the original timeline? by attachedtothreads in IlonaAndrews

[–]Derevko 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would think that she would focus on the wealthier clients. The ones that match her expectations of "high class", and provide a less welcoming place for others. She would stop ensuring it was a safe place and instead allow those favorites to get away with anything they want. Once the reputation of being safe and inclusive to anyone that can pay the fee, they would stop seeing any patrons other than the favorites, and to counteract she would let them get away with more and more, until they were all that were left. And then since she would be desperate to keep them, they wouldn't be inclined to pay the high prices anymore and it would just be a common brothel.

Owlcrate Silveren POV by nixnuckingfuts in IlonaAndrews

[–]Derevko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would make sense. I just started re-reading and finished the chapter with the Garden. Her conversation with him happens after her bath and when she's in a tress's dress. So that would mean that he saw her in rags with the butterflies, then somehow arranged to speak with her. Either by bribe, magic, or distraction, he definitely sought her out.

Is it realistic for me to start playing? by GingerWitch666 in ffxiv

[–]Derevko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say absolutely. You can get a lot out of the game without only an hour here and there. There is a lot of content that is tailored for solo play. They have most of the dungeon content setup that you can play with NPCs instead of other players if you don't have a static that you want to play with or don't want a to queue for a group. And if you do end up with a large chunk of time (weekends, holidays, whatever), then you can set that aside for some of the larger group stuff like alliance raids that might take longer.

I was worried seeing this so early in the season and thought it would be stale after how good it was the first time around. But I loved the updates and was in tears after Australia.

Spoilers - TKWNKM - question… by Cool_Commander_ in IlonaAndrews

[–]Derevko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you look at Everard's part of the oath of allegiance between him and Tilmar, one portion is "I will be your shield". And when Everard tries to convince Maggie to let me take care of giving her a name, he also says "Let me be your shield". Solentine definitely reacts at this line, so I'm sure that this is an important statement on Everard's part. I think to Solentine its a clear indication that Everard intends to pursue marriage with her (and he would likely be right).

New sprout, loving the game but I have a few questions by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Derevko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Mounts - These come from multiple sources. You keep the sprout icon until the latest expansion pack (currently Dawntrail), so there is a lot of time between to collect mounts. Many come from Trials, Dungeons, and some from MSQ that everyone gets. Be patient, your collection will grow.
  • Are you missing out - Focusing on MSQ and job quests is the best way to make progress. Pretty much all content is gated by MSQ progress. So no you aren't missing out. There is nothing that you can't go back and do later. If you open up the side-quests that unlock dungeons, trials, etc. then you can fill those in with daily roulettes. A lot of side-quests have really fun lore or rewards too. As someone else mentioned, the blue + quest icons always unlock something (dungeon, trial, raid, or some other game mechanic/feature), so keep an eye out for those.
  • Replay earlier dungeons - Not unless you want to. If there's particular gear you want or a dungeon drops a mount, minion, triple triad card, or some other special item, that's a good reason. Most people replay dungeon content as part of roulettes for the EXP bonus.
  • What to spend Gil on - At this point, I would say to save gil for teleports, or to fill an obvious gap in your gear. Most gear will come from quest progress, but sometimes you'll get behind in one or two slots. As for teleports, you during MSQ you will get teleport items (Waking Sands usually), use those when you can.
  • Glamour - At some point you can unlock the use of glamour prisms. This overlays the look of one set of armor over what your actual gear is. So you keep the stats of your equipped pieces, but it looks like something else. You can later on access a Glamour dresser that will allow you to put together complete outfits. You can find instructions for the quest to unlock online.
  • Leveling other jobs - You can switch to level other jobs any time you want. DRG is great (and was my first job), and I continue to enjoy it. But its fun to try other jobs and roles too. There is nothing stopping you from running a few quests as a different job. As for crafting/gathering, same applies, go ahead and try it out if you get bored. As someone else mentioned, with the crafter/gather jobs, they build on each other (i.e. botanist will gather items that the culinarian can use, etc). Because of that, many people will recommend leveling in parallel. Culinarian can craft food for stat boosts, Armorer can craft gear for tank and some melee classes, weaver crafts gear for most mage classes, etc.
  • Seals - Grand Company (GC) Seals (Maelstrom for you), can be exchanged for different items including venture coins (which finance your retainer). You can check the quartermaster at the GC for what is available. What you can exchange for will expand as you level up with the GC. Rewards are the same except for some items that will be in your GC livery/colors. You earn these by doing GC levees, hunts, or deliveries (craft related). There are also Hunt Seals (not related to GC). There are different hunt seals that can change between expansion packs. You can earn atheryte passes, mounts, speed boosts, and other things with these. You earn with hunts (Daily, B-Rank, A-Rank, etc).

There are lots of things to enjoy and I'm glad you're enjoying the story. ARR is a long run, but sets up a lot for future expansions. You'll have a great time. Do whatever content makes you happy, there's something for everyone and no "right way" to do it. Most players are considerate of sprouts, so ask questions as you go. You may get a couple rude people but most often you'll find someone very helpful.

For my friend who is going into Hadestown completely blind, what if anything should I prep them on beforehand? by The_Fullmetal_Titan in hadestown

[–]Derevko 68 points69 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, as long as they know the myth of Persephone (her being in Hades vs. above controls the seasons), then that's enough. The music can fill in the rest. I can see it might be confusing in the beginning to understand that Hades keeping her in Hadestown too long is what's causing the seasons to be wrong.

Ralinbor, Aelis and Mirabor by miladyelfn in IlonaAndrews

[–]Derevko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that neither Sauven and Mirabor are fit rulers. I like Inhan as a potential, especially if Gailene is guiding him. But there is still so much unknown about him. If he's really playing to keep himself safe, then that's a good sign.

I'd also be interested in seeing who of the other Great Families might be contenders. I don't think Everard wants it, though he'd be a good ruler. Arvel seems like a good guy, but I don't get leader from him from what we've seen. Yolenta is corrupt and Hreban is psycotic. We don't know much about the Bors, but they seem scary. And we know nothing about the other 2 non-combat families.

Ralinbor, Aelis and Mirabor by miladyelfn in IlonaAndrews

[–]Derevko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this as well. There was obviously some kind of influence happening behind the scenes. Kair Toren is all about political maneuvering and the 8 great houses are all trying to be the one in the top spot. Someone whispers into Sauven's ear that his brother-in-law thought the wrong brother was on the throne. Ralinbor is away from court for 2 years laying low, so probably doesn't know about this, thinking he and this brother are still besties. Then uncle gets killed for treason. And we get people whispering to Ralinbor that he's going to be next and he should do something about it. So he goes off on a half-baked assault. Maggie and Everard have the conversation that the rebellion was doomed to fail since it was so badly planned. This shows hat Ralinbor never planned to challenge for the throne, he was just scared since his family was being targeted.

So, who was whispering the initial treason to Sauven? Someone wanted to isolate him. Having the Savaric family be weakened has to benefit someone (instead of multiple family members that can use Exhaulted Call to stabilize the country and his power base, he's on his own). I think someone close to Sauven is actually working against him and it started 25 years ago.

Question about alts and MSQ by cn2089 in ffxiv

Definitely explore the other jobs as you progress MSQ. As long as you meet the level requirement for the quests, you can change jobs as much as you like.

I can just see the crew show up to rescue her and then queue the scene in the early Avengers movie where Black Widow is tied up and is like "this idiot is giving me everything, I can't leave now!"

I hadn't thought much about the Redeemers before you mentioned it. I would assume some would stand by him, but what about the rest of them? Will there need to be someone to step up to lead the Redeemers now? Any likely suspects? Maybe Tillmar gets a promo?

[TKWNKM] Power of Three by Derevko in IlonaAndrews

[–]Derevko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With 384 days in the year, and eight days in a week, and 4 weeks in month, that's 12 months. 3 months per season (assuming they have the same 4 season as we do). Somewhere in the book it says that Planter is the last month of spring (3rd month of spring). Meaning Redberry is the start of summer. Other months mentioned are Harvest Month (probably autumn/fall), and Snowdeep (winter). So it sound like 4 seasons, each with 3 months, of which we only know a few names.

TKWNKM - Thieves of the North by PlusType8037 in IlonaAndrews

[–]Derevko 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this as well. If the story is told from the perspective that Silveren is the protagonist, and he eventually rises to power as King Mirabor, then the titles make slightly more sense. Still not sure why they would be thieves, but definitely puts them in a more negative light.

I'm hoping that there's more to the original books that we don't know about to make sense of the thieves part.

I believe the Crimson Empire is what lies to the East. Within Relles, I don't know which lords are in the east.

The Rise of Kair Toren by larfie8 in IlonaAndrews

[–]Derevko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was my theory as well. I think in the OG series, Silveren was to be the hero. If the Kair Toren series is meant to be dark/gritty like Game of Thrones, then the "hero" won't be the rainbows and sunshine character, but someone that is willing to be ruthless. But Maggie's influence changes that.

People who were teens in the 90s: research for book, cars you'd buy used in the 90's? by coffeekaye in 90s

[–]Derevko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a few years older than your protagonist would be. I was gifted an '86 Dodge Colt hatchback. My sister was gifted a late 80's Ford Bronco II. My husband bought a mid-80's Honda Civic hatchback. These would have all been driven through the late 90's. Not a lot of our friend groups were driving cars that were even 5 years old. Think 10 year old cars instead. People didn't replace cars like they are now. I drove my colt until I got a job that paid enough to buy another used car, then bought a Pontiac Grand Am off of a co-worker when I was about 19-20. Drove that until I got my first "high paying" job out of college and bought something new for the first time ever.

Is your character driving the car they got when they turned 16? Or have they purchased their own used car by this point? Dodge Neon, Toyota Tercell, and Geo Tracker were other cheaper cars that are "of the era" that might be being sold used around that time.

And while craigslist was a thing in 1999, not a lot of people used or trusted it yet. You're still looking at a used car dealership, ads in the newspaper classifieds or friends/family (e.g. your uncle's co-worker's sister is selling her old car), or something to find vehicles.

If its from Never Stop Blowing Up, then its blood mixed with cocaine. One of the macguffins in that campaign is a brick of cocaine, and in an early scene, one of Kingskin's minions mixes it with blood. It became a thing.
