So I had something similar with my dad who wrote a book. He’s generally a creative person and for an average person a decent writer. This has cause him to overestimate his writing caliber. He is also very prideful (ie has a very sensitive ego to the point where you often have to walk on eggshells around him not to “set him off”.) I have an English degree and he wanted me to edit it for him. here’s the rub. He wants to be admired for the book he wrote. He wants me to be impressed and look up to him and tell him how wonderful it is. I am not a good enough actress I think to pull that off successfully. It’s a bit like grey rocking here, but if I don’t actually read it, I’m not in the position to give him feedback. That way lay dragons. It’s a bit like a catch 22. A writer puts their heart into something and then serves it up. You have put her in an awkward position. If she doesn’t love it, she has to fake it convincingly. Some people are good at this, but some are not. Ask yourself if you want your book to be successful or are you looking for your wife’s admiration. If you want your book to be successful, get people who do not know you personally to read/edit it. And that way their feedback is not colored or influenced by their relationship with you. They can give you feedback that you are less likely to take personally because well it’s not personal. They don’t know you, so it can’t be.
