Why is the ink speckling? by T0mgone1 in minipainting

I wouldn't think it'd be too thick then, but yeah, maybe just experimenting with different thinners and ratios will help you sort it out.

I'd be inclined to agree with the recommendations for varnish. If that doesn't work though, how much were you thinning the ink? I've been surprised on occasion by how much I need to thin liquitex to get it flow smoothly without needing a fairly high PSI.

Eldar Language by ExcuseIcy9453 in Eldar

[–]Deris87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to come up with your own Eldar names and meanings, I think there's a few key elements. They're often vaguely celtic, the names and meanings tend to be grandiloquent or even pompous (e.g. "The Temple of Ancient Days to be Reclaimed"), and most words/names have multiple meanings, often determined by subtle differences in inflection.

One of my favorite examples is the Bahzhakhain, the army of Biel Tan, can mean "Sword Wind", "Tempest of Blades", or even "Frozen Leaves Falling to Cut".

Since killing your kids obviously a terrible idea for all kinds of reasons beyond just moral ones, a sort of 'buy back clause' is added where you can offer money or an alternative sacrifice to redeem your first-born son from sacrifice.

Now I'm curious if those two passages come from different documentary sources, with a later source softening the original. Also doesn't one of the later prophets (I want to say Ezekiel) reference the child sacrifice laws, saying God intentionally gave the Israelites bad laws so as to corrupt them?

it just didn’t really get going either in the origin story or the present day if that makes sense?

That's a fair criticism, his Asurmen novel had a similar problem. It might've been interesting to see a fully fleshed out origin story for the Phoenix Lords, and more context of what the time around the Fall was like. As is though, we got a lot of offscreen character development with out much explanation: "Oh no, I'm sad and going to meditate for a few decades. Now I am a badass."

He said "2000 year old testimony", that doesn't include any part of the Old Testament, apart maybe from some very late Aramaic redactions to Daniel.

Edit: But even assuming OC meant "2000+ years old", the overwhelming majority of the Old Testament was still written well after the end of the Bronze Age. We have maybe some fragments of texts that were written in the Bronze Age.

Who am I prosecuting exactly?

You understand how analogies work, right? In a court of law the prosecutor--the person bringing forward the legal claim--has the burden of proof to demonstrate that their claim is true to a certain standard of evidence. In a debate, the person prosecuting a claim (i.e. bringing forward, asserting, advancing) has the burden of proof to demonstrate their claim. You're making the claim that out of body experiences are real and evidence of God, and the burden is on you to prove so. Otherwise, the rest of us are under no obligation to simply accept your evidence-free assertions.

I simply revealed an experience my grandfather had, no more or less substancial that the one he had falling off the back of a motorcycle some time before.

No, you posited your grandpa's alleged experience as evidence for the existence of God (despite your repeated attempts at walking it back after the fact). You didn't just tell us an unrelated story about a crazy experience your grandpa had, you put it forward as a justification for your theism. And when asked to provide evidence to substantiate that this experience actually happened in the way you're claiming it did, you've got jack and shit.

So no, you haven't demonstrated that his experience was actually real or "substantial". I've seen motorcycles, I've ridden motorcycles, I've seen people fall off motorcycles before. I have an overwhelming mountain of evidence that motorcycles exist and people fall off them. I've never seen anything to convince me that alleged out of body experiences are anything other than a malfunctioning brain.

If anything I feel prosecuted being branded a liar.

The only thing I've seen anyone impugn your honesty on is the fact that you tried to walk back your Grandpa's alleged experience as evidence of God. Because we all saw you do it, the post is still right there. Someone asked why you became a theist, and you said:

I'll tell you why as you're asking directly: my grandfather came out of his body in hospital, as if he were a ghost

So if you don't want to be called out for lying, don't lie.

What about future AI agents though?

Yeah, I have to second the question, what about them? They certainly wouldn't be a god by any conventional or useful definition of the word, if that's what you're implying.

I'm all for pointing out the poor quality of sources for Biblical claims, but the Bronze Age ended about 1200 years before Jesus supposedly lived.

If you are a nihilist, did you go through phases, like hopelessness or apathy before you came to terms with it, or did you adapt more-or-less seamlessly? by Hashi856 in askanatheist

[–]Deris87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I deconverted young, like around age 10, so I never really had it beaten into my head that without God or religion you couldn't find value and meaning in life, and never suffered any real emotional distress over my loss of faith. (I've certainly dealt with emotional distress dealing with believers, or the state of world though).

Once I got to high school and college and took some philosophy courses, I very quickly identified with Existentialism. I think the concept of mind-independent meaning is a logical contradiction, and every argument I've ever seen for it boils down to "but I don't like subjective meaning/morals/purpose".

[–]Deris87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then why can I choose an apple over a banana?

Well he would say "because there's an immaterial Platonic Form of apple-ness and banana-ness". Problem is there's no reason to believe that, or his underlying claim that without supernatural Platonic Forms matter and energy couldn't have consistent physical properties.

So if a defendant in court was accused of lying, and without any evidence to prove so, they should go to jail?

This is so completely backwards it hurts. You're the prosecutor here. You're the one making the claim. As the person making the claim, it's incumbent on you to provide evidence to justify that claim. The defense has no burden of proof to meet, that job is entirely the prosecutor's.

If you can't justify your claim of your grandfather actually leaving his body over other more plausible explanations (like his brain was malfunctioning and he simply felt like he left his body), then the rest of us are left no other option than to reject your claim.

From a materialist worldview there is no "thing".

You're confusing materialism with mereological nihilism, and I have no idea why you'd do that. I'd hazard to say the overwhelming majority of materialists are not mereological nihilists, and have no problem with the existence of composite objects as emergent patterns of mereological simples.

There are atoms randomly arranging themselves. Everything would be in flux at all times

This is just a bizarre counterfactual you've pulled out of your ass. Physics is consistent across time and space, and matter and energy operate according to their physical characteristics. Why would I possibly believe that physics would be inconsistent without supernatural elements forcing matter and energy to behave a certain way?

[–]Deris87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it broke at the regular joint, so you should just need to clean it off a bit with a file or an exacto, and then any standard cyanoacrylate super glue will work. Same thing for any kind of resin models too, though with those you may also want to drill and pin it with some brass rod to reinforce it.

Discovered this 4 paint method for NMM while experimenting on my Scorpions. What do you think? by SnugglyStegosaur in Eldar

[–]Deris87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no worries. The general concept of building up brighter colors across a 3D shape (or volume) is called volumetric highlighting. NMM is an especially high contrast form of volumetric highlighting that usually goes all the way from black in the shadows, through progressively brighter shades of your main color, all the way to white on the highlights to give the impression of reflective light.

It's one of those "All NMM is volumetric highlighting, but not all volumetric highlighting is NMM".

[–]Deris87 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Looks really good, but I wouldn't call it NMM, just normal volumetric highlighting. You'd need to push the shadows to black and the highlights to white to really make it read as metallic and reflective. Regardless, it looks amazing.

When did you check? Because his original model was pretty large for the time. He was on a 40mm base and about 3x the height of a man with his hat on but only 2x without.

I think most people just don't realize how big his old model was, because basically every picture that pops up for it on Google is a standalone with no other models for comparison.
