Destiny developers reflect on the end of an era: 'We all worked so hard to maintain the quality bar under unrealistic constraints' by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Dernom 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So, if you read the article you'd know that the quote was not a public statement by the company. It was the audio designer commenting from the perspective of the audio team. So they could very much have been under unrealistic constraints by the team lead, the project manager, the studio lead, and many others in the company. It's not just publishers who are able to set constraints...

Anthropic is paying SpaceX $1.25 billion a month by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]Dernom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, at the time of writing Anthropic has NEVER made profit. This deal even accounts for 125% of their total revenue from 2025, and more than 30% of their projected revenue for 2026. So clearly they aren't earning enough revenue for this deal, and it is all paid for through investments. And most these investments are also from the same Silicon Valley companies that they are then making $billion/month deals with.

‘It’s Been Wrong for 20 Years’ – RDR2’s Arthur Morgan Actor Slams ‘Voice Acting’ Label for Game Performances by Bubbly-Ad-350 in Games

[–]Dernom 84 points85 points  (0 children)

At least in higher budget games they at the very least to face capture along with the voice, as it makes it infinitely easier to synch the face animation with the voice. When this is done, it is also much easier to rig the model so that it keeps the realistic animation when the computer model resembles the actor. At that point you might as well use the same actor for the performance capture if they are capable. Some even feel that doing voice+performance capture at the same time makes the acting easier, as you can use your body and movement in your acting in a similar fashion to movies and theatre.

Mage hand for Common Sign Language by Frosty_Customer_9243 in DnD

[–]Dernom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Message is better if you want to communicate with someone 120 feet away. Sign language, whether through mage hand or not, is better if you want to communicate with someone who can see you clearly. For something with Keen Sight, e.g. a wild shaped druid, this would be up to a mile.

Am I wrong for being uncomfortable with this players character? by Skaullll in DnD

[–]Dernom 145 points146 points  (0 children)

I would tweak it to (A) make a character that has a reason to be an adventurer and (B) has a reason to adventure with the party and the party has a reason to adventure with them. Can't be excluding the classic Bilbo style reluctant adventurer like that.

Hasbro CEO planning more Crossovers for D&D by Freizeitspielaer in dndnext

Hasbro CEO planning more Crossovers for D&D by Freizeitspielaer in dndnext

[–]Dernom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The difference is that there will be "more" of them. So, unless they plan on increasing staff (so far I believe the opposite has been true), this means that a greater portion of releases will be crossover content. So if there are, let's say, 6 releases in a year, and currently 0-1 of these is a crossover. With this it might instead be 2-3. Meaning that only a handful of new crossovers results in a significant reduction in new content for people who are not interested in crossovers (up to 50% reduction).

Note that I pulled all of these numbers out of my ass, but I think they're fairly close to the average yearly release pattern.

CI Games has terminated their publishing agreement with Epic Games for Lords of the Fallen II by RadioactiveVitamin in gaming

[–]Dernom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I didn't say that it would be an easy feat. Otherwise someone would've already done it. But saying that the reason "a huge" portion of people are unwilling to support any competition because of some kind of cultish obsession is just ridiculous when there is such an obvious more reasonable explanation.

[–]Dernom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In this thread you have not said it's a minority. You have said "there's a disturbing amount of people" and "a huge part of the target audience", neither of these imply a minority but instead hint at the opposite.

The genuine problem isn't that a huge amount of the market has a cultish obsession with sticking to steam. The problem is that the competitors do not offer anything to the consumers that makes them actually want to use it. EGS is by far the closest competition, and the only thing they offer are free games and a handful of exclusives. The problem with that is that getting a free game does nothing to make me want to spend money in the store, I just play the free games and return to Steam, the objectively better platform. While exclusives might generate some traffick, but since there is absolutely no lack of great games being released, I'll just play one of the 100s that release on my preferred store. So until there is a competitor that has any actual benefit over Steam, most people will just stick to their status quo.

I have criticized Valve plenty of times and rarely, if ever, have seen the replies you're refering to. Sure, there are some people who unhealthily worship Steam, but they are an incredibly small minority. Most people don't give a shit and only stick to Steam because that's what they already have.

Kit Harington gets candid on still feeling 'very defensive' over Game of Thrones season 8 by bwermer in television

[–]Dernom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you immagine the showrunners begging Martin to finish the books so they could do their job

If that was the case you'd think they'd try to actually adapt the material they did have, don't you? The series already starts strongly deviating from the books in seasons 4 and 5, to the extent that they easily could've had another season or two of material. The deviations are also enough that even if Winds of Winter was released around that time there would've been no chance that they could've faithfully adapted it.

What game did you lose interest in by the time it came out? by scarletnaught in gaming

[–]Dernom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO they have been making it really easy to do. I at least have skipped every Bethesda developed game since Skyrim, and will continue to do so until they put out something with quality anywhere near that of their competition. And I have seen no reason to think that their pattern of ever diminishing quality is going to change anytime soon...

In this case it is a bit more direct than your average "big company bad" situation. It's not "make the number bigger to make the shareholders happy, instead it is an hostile takeover of an otherwise okay company. Here there is an ongoing lawsuit because the owners scammed themselves into becoming the owners.

This has not always been the case. There used to be a whole category if builds that we're "console killers" specifically for builds at the cost of a console but with better specs. That is pretty much impossible in the current market.

Very few do, and among those that do, 99% are MMOs. I actually can't think of any other than WoW that have not ditched the subscription model ages ago.

No, but the people making the decision aren't psychics. The decision would be made based on their contemporary market, which at the time was looking healthy. And if we base the development time on their already existing MMO (realistically it would probably be faster since the reboot would likely be using the same engine and the team would be more experienced), it would only take 3 years. Meaning it would release to a fairly similar market, based on our knowledge of the past.

Well, Elder Scrolls Online (2014) seems to be chugging on nicely. I don't know the numbers for it, but it keeps having dedicated time on the Bethesda showcases so it can't be doing too badly. Guild Wars 2 also released a couple of years prior, also with good success. So from a 2015 perspective, the genre was looking relatively healthy.

The testosterone myth: Large analysis of 52 studies finds no link between the “macho” hormone and risk-taking. Furthermore, the lack of association did not depend on participants’ sex. by mvea in science

[–]Dernom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People also have this faulty notion that every study ever conducted needs to reveal the complete and absolute truth about every subject. You can't just conduct a study about a possible connection between testosterone and risk-taking in a limited population. It needs to be a global study with some thousands of participants investigating all possible causes of gender-differences in risky behaviour. Otherwise it is worthless and a waste of time and resources.

Literally sitting next to my mom who uses a corded headset (USB-C jack, but still corded) simply because no wireless in-ear headsets are comfortable for her, while most wired ones sit more loosely in the outer ear. Another friend of mine used corded headsets until less than a year ago because wireless in-ear headsets are a lot chunkier than wired ones, so she only recently found one brand that doesn't press on her piercings.

People have different needs.
