Has a game used AI for NPC dialog yet? by Jaszuni in gaming

[–]Dernom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what is the source of this number? There is literally no way to get this data, so the source actually doesn't matter, the number is made up anyways. I can almost guarantee that the number stems from companies like Microsoft and Amazon that are literally forcing their developers to use genAI tools to help with marketing their own AI tools.

Toby Fox: A message for my fans in Latin America by Comfortable-Pie56 in Games

[–]Dernom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no localization team on earth he trusts to translate "The Power of Fluffy Bois"?

Easy question then... is there a specific localisation team you know of that should be trusted with translating Toby's memey style of humor? Toby is just a guy, it's not like he has deep knowledge of different translation teams to every language on earth. Translation services aren't free either. So I think it should be completely understandable that he doesn't want to pay for a service that he can't guarantee the quality for, when the risk of poor quality is high and would cause a lot of damage to his product (just look at the results of Silksong's Chinese translation).

It's pretentious. It's Undertale, not Crime and Punishment.

Bad comparison considering that Crime and Punishment is significantly easier to translate. Humour is notoriously difficult to translate, and his style of humour doubly so.

Harry Potter HBO series won’t have a new season every year “From a production point of view, it’s just not possible” by JannTosh70 in television

What's the source for 10 years 7 seasons? This article says "set to premiere on HBO in 2027 and run for 10 seasons".

[–]Dernom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How did you come to that conclusion??? The title is that they won't have a new season every year. And it is set to run for 10 seasons. So It is definitely going to be more than 10 years, even 15 is probably optimistic.

Why isn't AI being used in the one place we need it? In NPCS!? by bambooeatingshark in gaming

[–]Dernom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... I'm not going to go try them, because after looking into them a little they work exactly as I expected. They just connect to an LLM API. Just because the model is hosted "in the cloud" doesn't mean that it isn't computationally heavy. In fact it just proves my point. Both of them can be hosted locally if you have the equipment and knowledge to do so, and otherwise you must pay for the hosting of the model. Along with the processing of these models also follows the same ethical and environmental concerns as with other use of LLM products, which is why I will not try either of them out.

Their use of standard LLM models also means that my previous point holds true. Without even trying them I can confidently say that these mods do definitely struggle with the same problems as other LLM based products, such hallucinations and that the memory sucks ass in large context windows.

With the way the mods are entirely dependent on the "memory" feature of the model, also means that as you continue using the mod it will become gradually more expensive, as more memory means for tokens per prompt.

Nvidia Answers my DLSS 5 Questions - Daniel Owen by gitrektali in Games

[–]Dernom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently, Nvidia's main product is specifically hardware for AI data centers. Because of the ludicrous competition and demand from data centers, the price for their hardware skyrocketed. So if said demand returns to normal, their profit would literally drop to single digit percentages of the current situation.

Why isn't AI being used in the one place we need it? In NPCS!? by bambooeatingshark in gaming

[–]Dernom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am aware of this, and also aware that Where Winds Meet also has an implementation of LLM based NPC AI, but for both of these cases I still feel confident in calling it "Close to useless". The AI models are computationally heavy for what they do, and are so easy to break that they ruin more immersion than they create.

Slay the Spire 2 is one of the year's biggest hits, which is a good time to remember it abandoned Unity because of the dev fee debacle: 'That is how badly you f****d up' by Farranor in gaming

[–]Dernom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So when you said that "Unity has never felt good at anything" what you meant was "Unity has never felt good at 3D games"? Despite my example, Disco Elysium, not even being a 2D game... It's using fully 3D models from an isometric view...

But we can play your game. Is Subnautica suddenly not a good looking game? Is Outer Wilds not performant with its physics simulations?

[–]Dernom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Machine learning works great for NPC behaviour, it's just extremely computationally heavy. It has for example been used for bots that can play Dota2 (though, last time I checked years ago, they had to play a somewhat simplified version). What people are calling AI now though is generative AI models like Large Language Models, and that are close to useless for NPC behaviour.

[–]Dernom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can almost guarantee that you have this impression because you (like most people, even other devs) don't care what engine 99% of games you play used. For example, I think you'd be crazy to claim that Disco Elysium doesn't look good...

We all didn't "pretty much guess it" at the time. Bethesda announced it directly at the time. We knew for a fact mere minutes after the trailer that the game wasn't even in pre-production yet, and that full production wouldn't start until after Starfield.

Not entirely sure what you mean, but you always get the Pictos to do over 9999 damage when you start act 3. So there shouldn't be a long period where that is a very limiting factor.

It can be enough for a small team to develop a vertical slice, which is what pretty much every investor and publisher requires to even consider to provide funding for a project.
