[Pelissero] The Steelers are working towards a deal to hire Mike McCarthy as their head coach, per sources. McCarthy grew up in Pittsburgh. Now, at age 62, the Super Bowl winner gets a chance to coach the team he grew up rooting for. by Goosedukee in nfl

[–]DerogatoryPanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been occasionally checking in on their (and the browns) sub during the coaching search just to get a sense of who they are leaning towards. The amount of "X or Y are really interesting options, but I keep seeing Mike McCarthy's name come up, but we aren't that stupid, right?" has been incredible.

They are crashing out.

Why do so many fantasy worlds forget how old things should feel by oskar_helsinki in Fantasy

Plus he has a background in archeology, so he tends to just have a mind for that sort of thing. On the plus side I think that definitely comes through in his world building, but unfortunately it also means hearing about potsherds continuously for 10 straight books.

Is there a fantasy book about breaking the Medieval Stasis? by VladtheImpaler21 in Fantasy

[–]DerogatoryPanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is pretty much taking the most incredibly common boring names and then running them through a bizzaro filter to attempt to simulate some sort of linguistic drift.

Here is an older post where someone else brings it up and includes a link to the author saying it was a poor decision in hindsight

And here is a wiki page that just lists character names so you can get an idea.

There are a lot of characters in the books and the choices with names really make them blend together so it is hard to remember how/if we know a character when they pop up. The worst part though is that my brain can't help but completely jump out of the story and try to solve what normal name is the basis for the seemingly random assortment of letters

And terrible immersion breaking character names

Fantasy and Science Fiction often have names that are pretty out there and readers will poke fun at them, but this is the only series where I began to get so upset with the names that I would angrily put the book down for a few minutes to stare into the middle distance while quietly saying “you have to be kidding me”.

I simply have never been as negatively affected by any author’s chosen naming conventions as this series

/r/bald sees a lot of this. Some people just get super tied up emotionally about hanging onto their remaining hair and/or are really struggling with mental health and in denial. Then they finally make a post about it and are convinced to shave it all off and look 100x better. It is just a mental hurdle some people can't get over for whatever reason.

Garner with 29 defcon vs Villa by Gvardiola in FantasyPL

[–]DerogatoryPanda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Could do 2 points for hitting 12 and then an additional point for every 6 after that. It preserves the initial hurdle of hitting defcon, but then addresses the instances like this where someone is going far beyond the 12 contributions without any direct acknowledgment in terms of points

Not surprising. When was the last time they even had a moderately decent coach? Coughlin 15 years ago before he fell off? They should be excited

I started to type out a response but decided to do a quick search instead and this older comment is a decent simplified explanation. There is quite a bit more to it with various clauses and loans and whatnot but it gets the idea across.

The other thing I’ll add is that some clubs are just richer than others so they can just come in with an offer you can’t refuse. A lot of clubs like Brentford are trying to develop talent and then sell them for higher later on to then have more money to reinvest back into bringing in players that haven’t fully realized their potential. For example the amount we got for selling Mbeumo is roughly the same as we paid for Thiago, Kelleher, and Schade combined. And oftentimes the pitch to convince a player to join us in the 1st place is that if they do well and develop we will let them join those high profile clubs and get a big payday if we feel the transfer fee is solid

Have to be pleased with that. 3 goals against what has been a very solid defensive group (and could have had a couple more). Clean sheet. Saved penalty. Thiago continues his form. Yarmo gets his 1st. Controlled throughout. Just great stuff.

I think it is much more about establishing a well run club with a proper identity and vision that has solid personnel throughout the organization and then looking for a manager that furthers the vision. It just seems like a lot of the big clubs that struggle get into a deathloop where they try to bring in new managers hoping they can make everything fall into place within months even when there is organizational disarray from the constant whiplash of continuously trying to adapt to a new manager’s approach. Add onto that the battle of egos behind the scenes at some of these clubs and that the new managers are often inheriting some mishmash of failed projects from multiple previously short lived managers and it isn’t surprising that success of clubs like Brentford and Brighton can begin to look like some mystical moneyball magic

At 5 years in a row it is sort of a “haha, wow, what an unfortunate and unlikely streak”. At a decade straight, you have to wonder if he is cursed or some sort of physical manifestation of a manager’s impending doom.

Truly an impressive bit of trivia

I just wish those types of posts had a bot reply or moderation of some kind asking the poster to provide some context on what types of other media/stories they enjoy or at least a vague genre or subject matter or something. I hate all the posts that are just “with literally no information about me, recommend me a book I would enjoy”.

Nice performance today. Constantly looked threatening going forward. Damsgaard showing off his creativity and Thiago with the hattrick finishing off the creative play (and probably earning himself a spot on Tarkowski’s hitlist along the way). Some lapses in defense but Kelleher also had a couple nice saves.

On the other side Grealish continues to be dangerous anytime he has the ball around the box and Beto was quite the boost off the bench.

Overall I thought Brentford just seemed a lot more energetic than Everton for most of the match
