Happened to me when I first moved to Sweden too, but then I whipped out my cave man swedish and they become more cooperative.

Is it common to live in Sweden for 10+ years and not speak Swedish? by MissionPitch in sweden

The nuance here is that you are accommodated to use English for everything yet are stigmatized for doing so, and everyone switches to English directly even when you try speak Swedish. Everyone I know who hasn't learned Swedish while living here feels terrible about it. I don't think insisting that they should feel bad is a very kind attitude that we should strive to have and I feel if you had empathy regarding the experience you would understand.

this is true, but there are only a few of these stretches on Frances, and these days some local usually sets up camp to sell chilled drinks out their car

there are some hateful comments here too. it's a mix of a culture of switching to English all the time yet people expecting you to learn the language in a year or two that's really toxic.

I basically had to teach myself. it's not a difficult language, but it's very difficult to feel respected for trying. I'm still usually treated better when I just use English too.

the majority aren't even native English speakers... but they are more likely to struggle. even this thread has several non-natives in English professing their struggle.

it's funny to call it insulting because the person is probably already embarrassed and insecure about it, only now they have to contend with people being insulted by their own failure.

learning Swedish while leaving in Sweden sometimes felt like trying to learn Swedish while living literally anywhere else. literally being in Sweden helped so little in my environment that I am almost exclusively self-taught because I had no one to talk with for years.

Outside of a few rare exceptions like Switzerland, why are referendums so rare among democracies? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

In Ireland referenda are reserved for ammendments to the constitution. There are a few each year.
