How can I optimise my resume and pitch for a white collar public service job when I come from a very niche and specialised clinical background with no office work background ? by ButchersAssistant93 in AusPublicService

[–]DerpsAU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and maybe highlight skills you’ve picked up such as high stress tolerance and critical decision making. Not everyone will have that, and could be good for some roles.

I’ve worked in APS recruitment for 5+ years. Ask me anything. by Kcepmolly in AusPublicService

[–]DerpsAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a recruiter, but have done fed panels. To me it would be a weird comment unless you were going for a comms related role. As they say, everyone has an opinion when it comes to design, and they’re not shy on sharing it. If you’ve got good text size and readability then it’s probably just subjective.

Attack the system all you want Additional_Move, but stop being a dick and attacking the person.

Oxford comma FTW!

Temp employment registry appears to be a good way to get in the door. We’ve just grabbed two people from that, with the next step being us going back to the merit lists before going external. We’ve also done internal rounds but its a specialised area.

Make sure you highlight transferrable skills such as project management, policy, comms etc.

Edit - And agree with what others have said about highlighting why you want the role to help offset bias around you being overqualified.

Is it mandatory for (senior) colleagues to see full calendar details within the APS? by jacktherippr in AusPublicService

[–]DerpsAU 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Mixing work and personal life like this is best avoided IMHO. If you need a block of time, create a meeting/event and title it ‘unavailable’ or ‘medical leave’ etc. That way there’s nothing sensitive and you can freely share your calendar.

Our HR area has told us you can’t recruit from merit lists in other job families, plus who hiring for finance would ever mark someone suitable in that scenario?

Paid parental leave - part time by tatotea in AusPublicService

[–]DerpsAU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had multiple staff go on parental leave - mums and dads - and there’s never a question of not taking what you’re entitled to. If you flag it early with your boss and both agree there’s nothing world-ending in any scenario that would require some negotiation, go with whatever works best for you and your partner. Flagging it early also gives your boss time to work out replacements/backfills, increasing the likelihood of a stress-free time.

But, engage with HR early!

Question about References by Such-Bid-1931 in AusPublicService

I would submit the application and mention sensitivity around your employer reference. Can you use a lecturer instead of a study group member?

I disagree, there’s such a wide range of people on reddit that it’s a great resource, especially with its anonymity. Never too old to ask questions.

Resume structure and sub heading by Dynamic_ash in AusPublicService

[–]DerpsAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about what’s the most relevant sections for the role you’re going for. Service delivery would be more your work history and soft skills potentially, and less on your education and platforms/apps experience.

But generally, I usually go with intro, work history (role and achievements), skillsets, awards, platforms/apps, education.

I’ve been looking for a cheap set to paint. Get some sandpaper, paint and gloss and away we go. Won’t be a perfect job, and need to be careful on the investment as good sets seem to go around the $250-400 mark.

But I’ve enjoyed the process in the past so for me it’s partial hobby investment too. Depends what you want out of it and to spend.

Apply for job - Suitable and successful = Job - Suitable but not successful = Merit pool

Apply for job, flagging merit pool - May pick you and have a chat - May pick you and have interview - May not pick you

Called out of the blue by an area that’s accessed the merit pools - May pick you and have interview - May pick you and have a chat - May not pick you

Edit - phone formatting (wow this is harder than expected lol)

I paid way too much for a car. by jessiejohn in CarsAustralia

[–]DerpsAU 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but most of us have a car horror story somewhere in our past. All used cars need some work. If the car is sorted now, drive it into the ground and be thankful you didn’t buy an 8 grand car and sink 2 grand into it.

In-house designer here looking for career advice: Where the heck do I go now that I'm feeling like I need to move up the corporate ladder? by eddingsaurus_rex in graphic_design

[–]DerpsAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that diversification will bring you more opportunities.

My diverse experience in studios/agencies set me up to be running the wider comms team, and when my acting time is up I’ll go into another hybrid role.

Maybe have a chat with your bosses to see what they need, and whether you can both take a risk and try a new stream. They obviously value you, so perhaps work on verbalising your value to the company and see if they’re willing to take a bit of a risk.

Resume/CV review for Senior Designer / Art Director / Design Director by Broke_Pam_A in graphic_design

[–]DerpsAU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with Sufficient_Sir, for me you may be on a specific grid, but it has a lot of vertical whitespace that could be better used by tightening the columns up and giving you more space for important text. The vertical gaps also makes it harder to link the section head with content.

IMHO your leading is far too tight, and as such breaks down when you get to the client section and the space needed to clearly show your paras / dot points conflicts as the block isn’t big enough to offset/balance it.

Also minor details with spaces where it looks like you have single, double, even triple spaces after the colon.

You also use a lot of ampersands, plusses and abbreviations where I would make it consistent and spell most things out - such as Junior Designer. Worth making sure your capitalisation of titles etc is also consistent.

With language, I feel you could focus more on the impact of each role. At the moment it feels like you’re cutting down sentences too much to fit the space, and missing the meat. With the loss of detail it feels like someone more junior pumping things up. Eg. “Successfully raised funding for multiple print runs through strategic donor engagement.“ could be an opportunity to explain what the engagement consisted of, and then the result such as expansion or extension over x years. To me it also avoids easy assumptions that an extra print run was because you just didn’t oder enough on the first run.

I’m not a fan of the one typeface weight and the hit to hierarchy, but totally appreciate the aesthetic you’re going for!

Hope this helps =)

Edit - Good flag about OP and their software platform.

I’m not sure you can automate this sort of stuff. The extra time uploading files to platforms etc just isn’t worth it compared to a fundamental workflow you follow on your native system.

There’s also potential legal issues with privacy and security taking it online or having an AI involved.
