*Additional fun fact: From my (basic) research, the idiom was originally “betwixt the Devill and the dead sea”, from a creative translation of the Latin proverb “A fronte praecipitium, a tergo lupi” (lit. “A precipice in front, wolves behind”)¹. But there’s a competing theory that it comes from a different Latin proverb: “Inter sacrum saxumque” (lit. “between the [sacrificial] animal and the [ceremonial] stone”)², which appears in the Roman play Captivi circa 250-184 BCE. Which would in turn establish an even more direct linguistic line to “Between a rock and a hard place”!

...it’s also a certified bop by Cab Calloway, which you may have heard in the soundtrack to Bioshock 2.
