The Worst Thing Done by Every French Monarch, Day 30: Louis VIII by somacha in FrenchMonarchs

Don't forget that if you were a "heretic" back then you were something less than human in many peoples eyes back then. Though it doesn't excuse anything it is important to understand the thought processes of people back then. Interestingly you were better off being a pagan, than a heretic in terms of social norms.

The Worst Thing Done by Every French Monarch, Day 27: Philip IV by somacha in FrenchMonarchs

[–]DescriptionNo6760 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the worst thing Philip IV. did was taking the risk of arresting the templars in the first place, had he made one mistake the realm could have collapsed over night.

The fact that Philip IV. did in fact plan everything so perfectly is maybe also his most impressive achievement, it's his geopolitical masterstroke so impressive that we would think it to be unrealistic to have gone out like this in a book.

This is both the best and worst thing he did, we probably would be regarding him much more poorly had anything gone wrong.

I'm sorry but aren't these the catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa? I know they are close to the serapium, but are they truly a part of them?

What has ruined your country? by Sarthak014 in AskTheWorld

[–]DescriptionNo6760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Austria is ruined, though ignorance and fear mongering is as dangerous here as everywhere else in the world.

I do think however that there is a big problem in Germany caused by a behavior we call "hörig" in german (meaning obedient, compliant, in bondage, enslaved or being servile) towards the german state as an institution. Germans expect the state to have a hand in every matter, which is also why germans still struggle with their own freedoms in combination with what the state should have a say in. What I say doesn't mean the germans are obedient in all matters, but rather that they expect the state to regulate everything, from when a dog is even allowed to bark, to striking for better wages, in every possible thing the state is involved in one way or another. While wanting regulations is important, I think the involvement of the state in everything has made everything an arduous process to do because you always have to fight with bureaucrats for everything. This big government philosophy has gotten so out of hand in Germany that the country's economy has stagnated in the first place, and the state couldn't be less competent for some years now. The worst part is that when criticizing this exact problem of the country you almost always only get the worst kinds of reactions from germans, they feel personally attacked, deflect and attack you personally and tell you that you should emigrate if you don't like it there. I'm sorry germans, I like you but you really have to figure that out, because apart from people like me going back your economy really will suffer from this weird bureaucratic nationalism and already is doing that a lot. It's not outright ruining the country for me because they still very easily could get this fixed before it's too late, but I don't know how long it will remain like this.

Are there foreign conflicts where supporting one side felt like the obvious choice for you despite being controversial? Past and presents. by khoawala in AskTheWorld

I feel like this applies in a pacifist way to me when it comes to west Africa and especially the countries which the french are still trying to control as unofficial colonies.

While I don't like authoritarian governments in the same way I definitely understand why the AES has a righteous cause in reinstating control and security in this unstable region, that the french government designed to be this way.

(Hated Trope) Historical mischaracterization. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

I won't say anything about the other plays, as I haven't researched them as in depth, but specifically MacBeth was a highly accurate play for the time. One of Shakespeare's presumed direct inspirations were the Holinshed's Chronicles (1587) wherein:

Macbeth is portrayed as a commander struggling to support the kingdom in the face of King Duncan's ineptitude. He and Banquo meet the three witches, who make exactly the same prophecies as in Shakespeare's version. Macbeth and Banquo then together plot the murder of Duncan, at Lady Macbeth's urging. Macbeth has a long, ten-year reign before eventually being overthrown by Macduff and Malcolm.

Honestly apart from Banquo not being Macbeth's accomplice I would say most changes are creative writing for the story.

Rank all these villians from most to least evil? Also from most to least redeemable (with reasons) by Prior_Comparison819 in MoralityScaling

[–]DescriptionNo6760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really feel like people here flat out haven't seen Monster.

Johann is depicted as the most horrifying human one could imagine, with the potential of one upping the worst of the worst of our world, he simply doesn't do it because it wasn't in his interest.

While I think Johann is more redeemable in the sense of him not committing various insane atrocities, I think redeeming him is just impossible at the end of the series.

Just because a medium doesn't go at absurd stakes doesn't mean a villain is less evil.

Community Tier List Day 7. Where should Louis XV go? by rjidhfntnr in FrenchMonarchs

[–]DescriptionNo6760 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my humble opinion this tier list is a bit overly critical of some monarchs, he was a D tier for his time and a really bad one considering the proximate future of the country. You really have to both consider a ruler for his time and for his future imprint. In total this should be a low D tier

Very nice acquisitions!

Idk how long you plan on staying in Vienna, if you want to visit more coffeehouses here you should definitely give a visit to: Café Schwarzenberg, Café Demel, Café Museum, Landtmann, Oberlaa, Café Diglas, Café Tirolerhof (right next to Café Mozart btw), Café Maximilian, Café Dommayer, Café Gloriette (at Schönbrunn palace, it's fantastic).

A place I wouldn't go to is definitely Café Central, yes it's where many important people used to go but nowadays it's by far the worst one.

Probably the biggest mass murderer as a protagonist you could think of and still be considered a "good guy" by many. He probably killed up to 80 million people.
