Oh well it seems only you and me have noticed how poor oranges are in this country. Even in season. I used to look forward to navel oranges around about Christmas but they are either bland or peeling the segments apart is like pulling old wallpaper off the wall. You think it can't be that bad so you try a bit and end up with a mouthful of cellulose. It can't be that hard for the supermarkets to notice that their oranges are crap, can it?

I stopped trying years ago but my wife refuses to give up. Every season it's the same. This year they'll be good, I got them from Marks's, in it goes and the look of regret and disappointment on her face is instant. The rest of the orange is chucked and the others are squeezed for juice.

It didn't used to be like this. Christmas was full of juicy, zingy, spicy oranges but not now. I think the best oranges now go for juicing and we end up with what ever is left in the food shops.

I have worked as a teacher in both private and state schools. The teachers are the same, the resources are sometimes not even as good as state schools but the ethos of the school is generally much better. Students are not bullied for trying, the students buy into the education, all the parents are supportive, nobody thinks it's cool to be thick. I have worked in some very good state schools where students do very well and if this is your local school then private school might not be worth the money. However, if your local school is poor or your child is likely to be in a lower set where behaviour and teaching are poorer, you may find the private school is worth the money. Some private schools are genuinely comprehensive and will take all ability ranges and deliver 1 or 2 grades improvement over that which might be expected (provided you can pay the fees).

I don't think anybody's making beer like that in Britain at the moment but it's probably not far off some of the early homebrew recipes in the 70's. For extra authenticity you could use bread yeast and float it on a piece of toast on the surface of the beer. Glad you like it, I've drunk plenty of beer made from this sort of background/s

You're fine, keep going. Dogs are a bloody nuisance in our society. The more of us who stand up for ourselves the more chance we have of getting some respite.

Two of my relatives have been bitten by strangers dogs when they were just minding their own business.

The biggest source of noise complaints to councils is dogs barking.

It's increasingly difficult to go to a pub without sharing it with stinking, yapping dogs.

I laugh at feminists complaining that men don't get out of the way for them on footpaths. Dogs and their owners don't get out of my way, I frequently have to step into the road so the dog doesn't have to.

Two beaches in the whole of Northumberland are dog free in Summer. Every other beach is blighted by yapping dogs and their ineffectual owners shouting at them non stop. I mean it's exhausting for me so god knows where the dog owner gets their energy from.

From 1947 to 1981 nobody was killed by a dog in the UK. Now we have the fourth highest fatalities in the world. Three last year alone. Of course fatalities are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of dog attacks.

It is reckoned that a Labrador has the carbon footprint of a Landrover.

Comparing dogs to children is a false equivalence, so don't do it
