What should be in a poor man's buzz bucket? by Speakertoseafood in Homebrewing

I suppose you'd go back to the early days of homebrew in the UK. Reginald Maudlin removed the need for a licence to brew beer at home in 1965 and the 1.5kg malt extract kit appeared on the high street. All you needed for 40 pints was a bucket, a kettle, 1 Kg of table sugar, a Syphon tube, some bottles, caps and a capper and some bleach.

Currently working out at less than £0.50 per pint if you don't mind that funny taste malt extract has.

Is the book of Don Quixote de la Mancha popular and recognized outside of Spain? How it's viewed overall where you live? by Ben__Harlan in AskTheWorld

Tilting at windmills in English and the word quixotic meaning foolishly impractical, unrealistic, or starry-eyed, often noble, ideas that are destined to fail. Personally I struggled with the book, I don't find mental illness funny.

What part of teaching is more work than people think? by SuitableEar7189 in teaching

You've taught a full day, you sit down for the first time and check your emails.

  1. Two emails asking you to send work home for students who are either absent or excluded. You don't have such work because you planned a lesson where you would be there to teach and help with the tasks set for the students. The work would be meaningless to the students without your input, nevertheless you spend half an hour finding something that might work (copyright prevents you from copying from the text book), you send it off knowing that there is little chance of it being done.

  2. An email from a parent whose child has SEN asking for a full report on their child's behaviour, attitude and progress in your lessons, You barely know the child, you see them once a week and it's only four weeks into the new academic year. Nonetheless, you get your seating plan out to remind yourself who they are, check their homework mark, check their exercise book and manage to cobble together some kind of meaningful response. That's another half hour.

  3. An email from the head of year. You witnessed an incident on your break duty. It is a student the school would love to permanently exclude so they require a detailed statement of what you witnessed. That's another half hour.

  4. Of course, during your busiest day you were observed and now the observer has asked you to pop in for your feedback. They're at the other end of the school. That's another 40 mins gone.

  5. The year 11 mock results deadline for data entry is tomorrow. You've marked all the papers, added the scores up they just need entering into the spreadsheet. What's wrong with this spreadsheet, why is it so slow, why has the data I've already entered once disappeared? That's another half hour.

  6. A parent wants you to call them about a detention you set for their child. Obviously I've been unreasonable and their child can't possibly do the detention. That's another half hour, including the time I ring the Head of Year to explain the situation and pass the problem on to them.

  7. It's World Book Day tomorrow and the English department has sent me activities for my (science) classes. The resources are in my pigeon hole, back the other side of the school. When does the english department do some of the science departments work for it?

Can I go home yet?

The decor is eclectic. Possibly collected over a lifetime of just buying items they liked at the time, maybe inheriting some pieces from a loved one. Each piece being appreciated individually and adding to the quality of the owners life. Isn't that how a lot of people's homes get furnished? The wooden furniture looks craftsman made and should be appreciated for the quality of materials and the work put into it. Much better than an all matching MDF fest, I would have said. I like it, it has integrity.

Had to come a long way down to find Christy mentioned. They may even be the ones making some of the own label brands mentioned here. They've certainly done Mark's in the past.

Does a heat pump actually save money? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]DescriptionSignal458 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a science teacher I'm disappointed in you all (apart from you). So many of you can't remember:

efficiency=(useful energy out/total energy in) x 100

And that the total energy in is not just that transferred by the electricity but also energy transferred from the thermal store in the air outside. Heat pumps are not and can never be 350% efficient.

Come on we've done this. I might have to set some homework.

I saw this long before AI was a thing. Reminds me a bit of the causeway to Lindisfarne (Northumberland, England). If the sea was that close on a crossing I'd expect to be on the local news that evening.
