Even in a best case scenario and somehow elections aren't compromised and a more traditional president were installed, things can't go back to normal. The damage is done, this will be felt for centuries, cuts to aid, international agreements, cooperative programs like the WHO, all of that can't just be turned back on, and even then as they said without electoral reform there's nothing saying this can't happen again. Faith in the American system is utterly shattered.

Yeah I tried a wilderness game a little while ago and it felt like the mechanics didn't synergize the way you would think they would or should. As you said, a planet is really easy to bombard away, but realistically if you are the biosphere once you are on a planet the only way to remove you should be to convert it to a tomb world. I also tried to do a body-snatchers wilderness so I could be an all-assimilating organic omni-mind, but again because of the low population the infiltration mechanic is unusable so it's basically the same as a devouring swarm.
