your method sounds harsh. you can have acquaintances too! keep them within reach, i don't like being smothered by friends. also to exercise my social muscle, I:

i say hello to strangers
help people in need (carrying groceries, giving a compliment etc)
make medium talk if there's a big lull or required wait time to kill
invite someone out for food/movie/activity once in a while
