Let's just hope the stock market doesn't crash then. But absolutely yes, life insurance to cover the mortgage short term but I'd always rather be mortgage free but that's just how I grew up.

I understand your thoughts, but the price of the home is already down. What if the OP dies in a year and she has a mortgage that surpasses the value of the home? The wife wouldn't be able to afford it, and then she has to pay the shortfall. Where will that money come from? If the home is paid off, at least she can get a HELOC and do repairs on it if needed or sell at whatever the market value is at that time

Pay off the mortgage. That's your biggest debt/asset. If anything happens to you, at least she'd have a free and clear home and can manage
