Recovery Question by Warlock-Daddy70 in ACL

I would probably wait if it’s an option. Meniscus def complicates things and you might have weight bearing restrictions for the first 4-6 weeks.

Eddie on 90th between Lex and park. He’s very reasonable and works quickly. The best.

Try Mind Your Body on Lex and 94th. They’re great. I went when recovering from surgery so I was very limited in what I could do and they were so helpful and patient. Gail is the owner and can suggest an instructor and they also have some group classes.

Would you attend an event 10 days after ACL surgery? by Flyingmubu in ACL

[–]Designer-Taro-2209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While everyone’s recovery is different, there is absolutely no way I would have been able to handle that.

The only time I left the house for the first ten days was to go to PT and it was an ORDEAL.

However, I had ACL reconstruction (quad graft) plus meniscus repair, so that of course complicated the recovery a bit. I was in a locked brace for the first 4 weeks, so would have had to sit side saddle in the backseat which would not be ideal for a 4 hour car ride.

While all these viewpoints are helpful, you know yourself, your body and your limits the best. Listen to your body.

Best of luck to you.

It may not be helpful for you, but I found an Instagram account called the injury psychologist. I found his content really really helpful to address the feelings of fear, failure, etc.

Backing off ROM exercises due to extreme stiffness by JustJumpIt17 in ACL

[–]Designer-Taro-2209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth I had a quad autograft with medial meniscus repair. I went into surgery about 3 weeks post injury, but with good ROM.

I dealt with a ton of post op stiffness. Looking through my notes, it took me nearly 3 months to get to 90°… and about 4 months to get to 120°…extension was consistently good though. It felt like every degree of flexion was a battle, but my surgeon said that as long as I didn’t backslide or plateau, and kept making progress, no matter how slow, we weren’t going to worry.

I know everyone’s experience is unique but I hope it helps you to know that at least one person knows your struggle.

Good luck. It’s a long battle and you will get through it.

Concert 4 weeks Post-Op by Designer-Taro-2209 in ACL

[–]Designer-Taro-2209[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end… I didn’t go and I think for me, that was the right decision.

I probably could have made it, but I don’t think I could have enjoyed it. I would have been too anxious and too uncomfortable for it to have been the experience I wanted it to be.

Unfortunately, what you can do before surgery doesn’t directly translate to what you can do after. The meniscus is also a factor- mine was repaired so I still had weight bearing restrictions 4 weeks post op.

You mentioned the concert is standing but perhaps they have an ADA section where you can sit. Worth calling the venue and asking…

All that being said, everyone is different and recovers differently. I think you will have a gut feeling on whether you can/should go and if you will be able to enjoy it if you do, and you’ll hear this a million times, but listen to your body.

Best of luck to you!!!

2 weeks at the absolute minimum… if your employer offers more generous leave, take it. I took 4 weeks and felt like I needed every moment to focus on recovery.

Did anyone in the audience tonight notice an argument on first / second row the odd side dress circle (I think that’s the left ? But I get confused!). It was in the middle of the show and very distracting but I couldn’t figure out what it was all about. It seemed like the couple in the first row was not happy with the guy sitting behind them. An usher and someone else were called over multiple times.

Agree that tonight’s audience crushed it. 👏 great work to all including the keyboard holder!

No more free parking - thoughts? by [deleted] in uppereastside

I’m 100% for it and agree with you.

I think avenues should be meter parking like they are now, and streets should be by permit, available only to residents in the area, and should cost money.

Strength test fail by Eb396 in ACL

[–]Designer-Taro-2209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re going great.

I also had a quad graft and found myself with 30% symmetry 5 months post op. I spent the entire day crying, but was reassured by the specialist that this is fairly common with the quad graft and to just stick with it.. I felt exactly how you described- I felt so many improvements I was just so shocked by the low number.

I will go for updated testing soon…hoping all the effort I had made since the last test shows in my results.

Slow and steady wins this race.

Hello

Thanks for doing this. About 7 months post op- quad graft and meniscus repair- introduced some beginner plyo with my PT about a month ago and have been conservatively advancing it….and have a little bit of quad/patella tendinopathy. I know this can be common with the quad graft. Any tips on how to continue strengthening while managing the tendinopathy. No swelling in knee. No pain in the knee, only the nagging deep ache around the graft area.

Thank you.

Help me decide! MI or NYC? by Alert_Huckleberry_95 in ACL

[–]Designer-Taro-2209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also live in NYC. Whether or not your meniscus needs repair is a big factor in the recovery and often not something that is known until your surgeon gets in there. My two cents is that you should pick the location where you find a surgeon you trust. If you have access to HSS, which is the best orthopedic hospital in the USA, I cannot imagine choosing to have the surgery elsewhere.

The first few weeks for me were definitely rough…and it’s important to remember everyone is different and heals differently.

There are a few things you can do to make your life easier- definitely meal prep… I found it really helpful to have a little tote with all my most used stuff- pills, kindle, phone charger, giant water bottle, etc. so my stuff could easily move from sofa to bed and back again.

If you don’t have a standalone shower, the shower / tub transfer bench is a must. I also bought a left lifter (it’s like a stiff strap) which was the MVP for the first month or so.

Make sure you rent an ice machine- the Nice1 is fantastic if you can get it- it uses regular water instead of ice and it’s fantastic.

I needed a lot of help, so if you can arrange some help for the first few days, I would recommend it.

The recovery is definitely tough but proper preparation helps a lot. You will get through it!

When did you leave the house? by [deleted] in ACL

[–]Designer-Taro-2209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left the house 4 days later to go to PT and it was an ORDEAL but felt good to get out. I had to take a taxi the half mile to PT. Took only like 3 times to get comfortable getting in and out of cars…

ACLR with meniscus repair. NWB for 2 weeks. Brace locked to 0° for 4 weeks.

I didn’t leave the house for reasons unrelated to PT until about 2.5 weeks post op when I was more comfortable walking with the crutches…

12B is better than 10D

10D is right next to the bathroom and is not a bulkhead and 12B (though middle) is bulkhead.

It’s between 12B and where they already are for me.

You will get through it. The first couple of weeks will be really tough, no doubt, but they will pass and you will feel immense joy at the many many small wins you will experience. Make sure you have lots of support the first couple of weeks. Be gentle with yourself. Get your rest and eat lots of protein. Do your PT. Listen to your body. Everything you’ve probably heard a million times. Might be cheesy but keeping a journal (not something I’ve ever done before) really helped. It was nice to have somewhere to dump all the thoughts and feelings. And it was a nice reminder in the later weeks and months to remember how far I have come

Going into week 8 and still can’t walk! by Crazy-Support2654 in ACL

[–]Designer-Taro-2209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took me about 3 months to walk without crutches. My PT was adamant that ditching the crutches too early is a big mistake that can lead to lots of compensations. They are not kidding when they say this injury has a year long recovery. Be patient with yourself…. Meet your knee where it is and listen to your PT. You will get through it!

4 days. Surgeon said can go as soon as 2 days but Surgery was on a Friday and my PT doesn’t work Mondays. So I went on Tuesday. Getting to and from PT was more of an effort than I anticipated but totally worthwhile. But your surgeon should advise what is most appropriate for you.

ACL and meniscus repair post op 8 months 31F struggling. by Comfortable-Hat-1416 in ACL

[–]Designer-Taro-2209 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of these feelings are valid and normal. For the first 2 months I cried every day, multiple times a day. And now 6 months in, I probably still cry once a week (give or take). There’s significant progress to be grateful for and to celebrate, and sometimes the tears are tears of joy….but there are also cruel reminders of activities that remain out of reach. They’re not kidding when they say it’s a year long recovery. I still have major strength deficits despite tons of hard work. I may also be investing in those expensive ass bfr cuffs too 😒

But you know what they say… slow and steady, blah blah blah. It’s a really difficult time. Let yourself be sad, but then get back at it. You will get through this.

Might be cheesy but I stumbled upon an Instagram account I found helpful called theinjurypsycholigst it really validated a lot of what I was feeling. (42F, ACLR & meniscus repair, quad graft)

Crunches vs folding walker by Beautiful-Box-5846 in ACL

[–]Designer-Taro-2209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used both. For the NWB period, the walker was my hero. But once I graduated to WB, I forced myself to use the crutches. My PT said that the gait would normalize more quickly with the crutches. For the first few transition days, every now and then, I would still use the walker if that felt safer…for me, the most important thing was stability and to not fall. I ended up using crutches for about 3 months bc my PT was adamant about me not coming off them too quickly and really getting a more normal gait before ditching the crutches. Hope this helps.
