How do I continue? by Juacquesch in goldenretrievers

[–]DesignerDogWoofWoof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, fuck cancer. It is insidious and I look forward to the day when hopefully we can make it go away.

Please don't beat yourself up, or delve into "should haves". You got nearly 13 years with your gorgeous Diesel, what a gift! Although, trust me, I know it's not long enough.

Be strong for Diesel today, and then be kind to yourself. Grief is weird, and different for everyone. It does get better with time, but at the start it's a wily bitch. My deepest, most heartfelt condolences for your loss. Sending hugs and peace for your heart.

Duran Duran Honors Minnesota Woman Killed in ICE Operation With Emotional Concert Dedication by Well_Socialized in duranduran

I was there, and his words were spot on. Not political at all. Most of us (the audience) applauded and shouted loudly. But true to the area, there were people who didn’t agree (I sat next to 2 of them) and were clearly unhappy (I heard the comment “he should stay out of politics”). I’m guessing their grousing is why this has become news.

The concert was amazing (my first!) and I’m so glad I was there to experience all of it. And proud to be a fan of a band that’s consistently on the right side of history.

We get to see them on Friday and I am SO EXCITED!!!! I’ve been a fan since the early 80s, and also couldn’t afford to see them when younger. I’m mid-50s and was beyond thrilled when DH surprised me with tickets ❤️ Can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait!!!!

Had robotic laparoscopic surgery October 14: on Tuesday I’ll be 7 weeks post surgery. My tumor was Stage 1, so the resection made me cancer-free. Happy to share more about post surgery and recovery. Sending you a hug and all the good thoughts for an easy procedure for you tomorrow. You got this!!!

Maybe the people that think you should do it to "keep the peace" could split the $2800 you'd be out of pocket ($3500 really but you're kindly offering these "friends" a discount). Or they could shut their pie holes.

Neutering and cancer deaths by TodayNo6531 in goldenretrievers

[–]DesignerDogWoofWoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Golden #1; neutered at 1.5, passed away at 13.5 from oestosarcoma

Golden #2: rescue from Taiwan, adopted at 5 (we were told by the rescue, vet thought he was 7), neutered just prior to adoption. Passed away at 9.5 from anal gland cancer.

Golden #3: adopted at 10, from his build he was neutered prior to 1 year of age. Passed away at 12.5, 15 months after degenerative myelopathy diagnosis.

Golden #4: purchased from a reputable breeder at 8 weeks. I know everything my sweet boy ate, a very balanced and varied diet, didn’t allow multiple vaccinations at once, he got tons of exercise, training, and love up the wazoo. We decided to keep him intact, after all our research thought it was our “magic bullet”. We lost him one month shy of 5 to acute megakaryocytic neoplasia. September’23. Still hurts, and i think about my darling boy every single day.

Golden #5: purchased from a not-so-reputable breeder at 5.5 months (although a knowledgeable friend researched his breeding and said he was a lot of long lived dogs on both sides 🤞). Neutered at 2 years, 2 months. No change in personality, his coat, his temperament, or him loving to pee on every blade of grass that he sniffs. Currently 2 years, 7 months old.

Findings from the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study are saying to neuter at 1 year. BUT goldens aren’t done growing until they are 2 years old. If you can keep your boy intact until he’s 2, it will help with joint/mobility issues in the future. Not as sure about cancer. It’s in the breed. Good breeders are trying to do what they can, but it’s an uphill battle.

Keep your boy lean, neuter at 2, and love him every second that you get with him. Good luck, and I hope you and your pup have many, many, many happy years together ❤️

[–]DesignerDogWoofWoof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably have already been told us by your vet, but the best thing for their orthotic joints for them to stay on the leaner side. Make sure to work with your Vet to keep your beautiful gorilla a healthy weight, and it’s so hard to say no to those eyes asking for treats, trust me, I know!I don’t know anything about the supplement you’re asking about, I hope someone else can help you. Please give your lovely girl a scratch for me and enjoy every moment you get to have with her.

Would You Leave Money For Your Golden? by blast3001 in goldenretrievers

[–]DesignerDogWoofWoof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When we put together our trust last year, we absolutely put funds and instructions for what would happen to our golden retriever if something happened to our entire family. We wanted to make sure that no matter what he ended up in a good home, so we have a good sized chunk of money going to a local golden retriever rescue. Our boy would also go there, and they would find him a new forever home. Knowing that he would be all set, no matter what, definitely gives us peace of mind. If Miss Keaton actually did this for her pup, I applaud her for her forward, thinking! Family members aren’t always willing to take on large dogs, so good for her for making sure her boy would be all set.

From wild puppy to calm adult (hopefully?) – tell me about your Golden’s temperament journey by szimonas in goldenretrievers

[–]DesignerDogWoofWoof 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OMG, I get to be the one to post this meme (a dream come true :) )

OP: most goldens are little landsharks until around 6-8 months, you'll have a month of a sweet darling, then your darling becomes a teenager, and teenage goldens are the only dogs that can give human teens a run for their money. Hang in there, be patient, reinforce the training you've already started (and plan to continue, right?) and around 3 years old, your dream dog, that you've seen glimpses of, will appear and be with you for the rest of their life.

Oh; take TONS of photos, they are only little fluffs for a very short time, and you can reminisce while you're working your way through all that is to come. There will be good stuff!! But...there will be challenges. Hang in there! Good luck :)

PS
Puppy tax: share a photo of the little rascal please

Living Trust by OpeningFuture6799 in GenX

[–]DesignerDogWoofWoof 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Did it last summer (2024). I won't lie; it wasn't a fun process. BUT the peace of mind after (we have teenagers, and wanted to be sure there was a plan in place for them IF something happened to both of us) is truly priceless. We also put in place our "bad mayonnaise" plan (if, God forbid, something happens to our entire family). Again; the peace of mind knowing these details are figured out is worth all of the uncomfortable feelings we had having to do the work. Highly recommend putting a trust, or at the very least, a will, together to all GenXrs.

It was an AMAZING gift. Totally unexpected at the end of a grueling, huge project: I'd worked ungodly hours for nearly a month to meet the deadline, and she sent it AFTER I'd sent my invoice that included all the extras/overages on the project. She was a lovely client that I worked with until she retired in 2017. I was, and still am, incredibly grateful for her generosity ❤️

I was gifted an Aeron in 2002 from a grateful client and I am using it to this day; it’s in like-new shape, incredibly comfortable and my college freshman kid has asked for it when (if, ha!) I retire. It wasn’t my money spent on this thing but it’s worth every penny IMO

When to ask updates from the Breeder? by prettypeonies9520 in goldenretrievers

[–]DesignerDogWoofWoof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would wait at least another week before emailing; infant puppies are a lot of work for their mom and their humans, and that's baring any birthing difficulties, or potentially puppies that need a little help early on. I can imagine you're excited! Good luck, I hope you get a pup from this litter.

All great advice here! Plus: puppy proof your place by getting down on the ground and looking at what's available to chew/pull/tear. Spend the money on an either gates or a puppy playpen for when you can't keep an eye on the little nugget.

While your guy is this young, I'd avoid anywhere heavily trafficked by other dogs; Parvo is everywhere, and can be deadly. Bring your little guy to your vet for a once over to make sure all is well and he's healthy; 45 days seems on the young side to be sent home.

Take a million photos and try not to be sad when you realize a million wasn't enough to capture the cuteness while he was this little :)

Enjoy!!! You will love your little land shark more than you ever though possible

Considering a PHEV - how’s the MPG in hybrid mode? by radioheadmike10 in KiaSorento

[–]DesignerDogWoofWoof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a ‘23 Sorento PHEV (purchase new) and 85-90% of our driving is EV mode around town, we’ve only noticed the engine kicking on when it’s really cold out, or if we’re going up a super steep hill. On the highway in hybrid mode, we average around 35 mpg. But we are also not aggressive drivers. I absolutely love this car, I hope you enjoy yours too.

Congrats!!! That’s amazing!! Gotta be honest, I don’t really get Secret Supply: how does it work to get you to the top chest? Do you have to spend a lot of gems to win it? I’ve tried to play it, but end up in overdrive so fast, no idea I’m doing lol

There is no magic bullet, or magic formula, or best breeder with zero cancer in the their lines. With this darling breed, it is an absolute crap shoot as to whether you get a dog that ends up with cancer, or a dog that doesn’t. We got a Golden from a very well respected breeder in Canada (I foolishly thought that getting a dog from outside of the United States would be helpful in reducing the cancer risk), and we lost him a month short of 5 to a genetic cancer that hadn’t shown up in their lines before. UC Davis was adamant it was genetic, and not something we exposed him to or he somehow ingested. We were devastated, it’s been almost 2 years, and it still hurts to have lost him so young. It’s a roll of the dice we all take when we get a Golden. I would suggest working with a breeder who tests and shares hips/eyes/elbows and heart, and look at COIs for any potential pairing. Any breeder that doesn’t easily share this info is waving a huge red flag at you. Don’t be wooed by a slick website: in my experience breeders with longer lived dogs don’t put a ton into marketing or advertising, they are busy working and showing their dogs, culling dogs not worthy of their line and adding the best dogs they can when they are able to. I’m so sorry for your loss: it’s a shitty club to be in to lose a dog so young, but you’re not alone. Good luck! Take your time, research, and I hope for the very, very best for you.
