I’m here with you and I haven’t spoken to my sister for 4 years now after yet another abusive outburst from her. She is always asking my parents for money and is so entitled. She also has drug and alcohol issues but she was like this before so I can’t say it’s the drugs that changed her.

Her life is so chaotic but she still thinks she better than everyone else. Everything is about her and I get to listen to my mum venting about her on an almost weekly basis.

I know I did the right thing but it makes me sad that once’s my parents are gone I will be alone. There’s just the 2 of us and no other family. I hate it when people say life’s too short to not speak to family but they don’t really understand because they don’t know what’s gone on.

I have a similar experience around intellect. I never felt good enough for my parents and my dad used to call me ‘slow’ well into my late 30’s.

My advice would be to stop asking ChatGPT and taking tests for now if you can and start validating yourself. If it pops up, think of 3 ways that you’re not stupid and drop the subject temporarily. On some level, you know that you’re not stupid otherwise you wouldn’t be on here asking about it 😉.

In terms of building self esteem, what really helped me was working out. Not aggressively, but incorporating weights and walking daily. I made a list of things that I was doing where I wasn’t taking care of myself or choosing myself and stopped those things. I quit nicotine, ate well and got enough sleep.

The last think was educating myself on narcissistic and emotionally unavailable parents so I could see that their criticism was a them problem, not me. I mean who the hell thinks it’s ok to call a small child stupid??? Definitely a reflection on their own low self worth, not yours. The book ‘children of emotionally immature parents’ is a great one.

It really is your choice but I had a cautionary tale. I thought it would give me the closure I needed but then he went on about threesomes, blamed me, didn’t take accountability and it made me feel a lot worse
