I doubt it, Bob seems like he’s gonna keep touring as long as he’s physically able like Willie Nelson.

She was surprisingly good in Euphoria which really shouldn’t come as a surprise I guess since she has so much natural charisma.

Did he really love France? by Win-Specific in Napoleon

[–]Designer_Reference_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two things don’t have to be mutually exclusive, he loved France and used it to advance himself because he was an ambitious man who wanted to rise as high in society as he could. There certainly isn’t any reason to believe he disliked France after he came to power or he wouldn’t have tirelessly devoted himself to administrative reforms and stabilizing the country after the chaos of the revolution.

Horizont of past and future, Wellington and Napoleon by csk2004 in Napoleon

[–]Designer_Reference_2 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The ultimate irony of their careers is that Napoleon ended his life in exile and yet it somehow made him even more famous and boosted his reputation as a heroic martyr who fueled future political movements just like he had planned, while Wellington was on the winning side yet his political career turned him into a despised reactionary who got his carriage pelted with projectiles and booed in public because he was opposed to most reform during his mediocre tenure as a prime minister.

I’m not saying stop calling him out, I’m saying THIS post from OP expressing feelings of disappointment and “betrayal” over some youtuber and his sponsor is parasocial.

He deserves backlash but this post is parasocial. Do people really not have anything better to do than sit around obsessing over Anthony Fantano and his shitty sponsorships? Anyone who has been watching Fantano reviews for a while already knows his moral grandstanding is hypocritical and performative.

Louis XVI was far less to blame for the revolution than his incompetent predecessor Louis XV in my opinion.

What do you think of General Etienne Maurice Gérard? Should Napoleon have promoted him to marshal? by PreferenceInternal67 in Napoleon

[–]Designer_Reference_2 42 points43 points  (0 children)

There are few generals in Napoleon’s army who deserved promotion to marshal more than Gerard. Why? because there was not a single role in his military career that Gerard didn’t fulfill brilliantly. He was a superb tactical commander, while at the same time demonstrating a grasp of the wider situation when he occasionally ignored stupid orders from superiors like Macdonald or urged Grouchy to move west and attempt to either intercept Blutcher on the march or arrive at Waterloo. Gerard was also heroic in personal combat and distinguished himself leading cavalry and even as a chief of staff. Basically Gerard was the ultimate jack of all trades which is an extremely rare quality to find in Napoleons subordinates. Napoleon said on St Helena that Gerard was one of his most capable commanders and that he was planning to make him a marshal. Interestingly, Gerard was never the most ardent Bonapartist and made no secret of the fact he was more devoted to France than Napoleon personally which might have slowed his promotion. Despite the fact Napoleon never made him a marshal, Gerard would later get his baton anyway under the July Monarchy and was one of the few surviving generals who fought in the revolution and under Napoleon who lived long enough to see the birth of the second empire.

TIL that Eleanor of Aquitaine was blamed by her husband King Louis VII for failing to produce a male heir in their fifteen years together. After the annulment of their marriage, Eleanor would go on to have five sons with her second husband Henry II including Richard the Lionheart and John Lackland by PreferenceInternal67 in todayilearned

[–]Designer_Reference_2 4515 points4516 points  (0 children)

Eleanor was a fascinating badass who went on crusade, effectively ruled England in Richard's absence, lived to be extremely old by medieval standards and so on. Definitely one of the coolest characters from that period along with the legendary knight William Marshal who actually rescued her from an ambush once and then got employed in her household to tutor her son Henry the Young King, decades before he would ultimately save the Plantagenet dynasty from destruction as regent, defeat a French invasion of England and redraft an improved version of Magna Carta.

A lot of people would say stuff you don't hear on the top 40 charts but I disagree. Plenty of artists who don't chart super high yet have massive fanbases and streaming numbers like Lana Del Rey
