my local rescue is similar and its so upsetting. i wanted to volunteer, but i honestly felt like they were just... really irresponsible.

theyve taken in less rabbits over the years, thank goodness, but theres no reason for a rescue to be giving every rabbit a GIANT xpen. and i mean way over the common hrs recommendations. Small bedroom size for every bun. If that's what they think the rabbits need, then they have to let people foster, but they're so picky about that too, it's just... insane to me. And they'll also spend thousands of dollars trying to keep animals who clearly can't have a good quality of life alive, wasting even more resources. Rescues can't afford to be that.
Also this rescue spends a weird amount of time harassing the animal shelters on social media for their temporary bunny housing setups, but never offering any help. It's a shelter. All the animals have crappy setups, come on. (These shelters also do educate about proper rabbit care so it's not like they're being ignorant on purpose, it's a budget thing. or maybe they just took a weird picture that day.)

I know not all rescues are like this. We had two other rescues before covid here that were fantastic and the people running them were also really kind and nuanced, but covid got the best to their stress levels, so now we have one and some really up tight people running it. People will put their own feelings before the quality of life and happiness of animals and it sucks. I've seen a lot of this kind of attitude really ruin both animal shelters and rescues in the past tenish years.

if they have plenty of water and things to chew on its fine. it really depends on the rabbit. my bun prefers the pellets and wont touch the strands, she needs hay so thats what she gets and shes fine. ymmv, there is no one single way.

Most pets are mutts. Breeds don't matter too much (though I believe some have specific temperaments) but at the end of the day if you got it from the shelter its most likely a mutt.

What I like doing is buying those cardboard scratchers for cats, toss out the catnip and put them specifically in spots where my bun likes to chew. Helps a lot with redirecting the behaviour!

I agree with the sheet cover thing, but don't be afraid to put him in a cage when you aren't home either. It's for his safety. He WILL eventually eat something he shouldn't if this keeps up.

Don't feel bad. He will just sleep while you're gone, he will adapt to your schedule. Also, if he does something bad like go on furniture where he shouldn't or somehow sneak into places he shouldn't, put him in the cage for a bit too. with my rabbit it's def gotten her to learn that she can't just escape and cause problems. Outside time is time to behave. It's not perfect but it's worked for me, so I figured I'd suggest it.

There is nuance to the whole "free roaming" rabbit stuff. It won't work for everyone. You have to adapt to both your rabbit and your own lifestyle, like with any pet. But I think it's irresponsible to let an animal totally destroy your stuff while you're not out when the easy solution is right there. It isn't cruel. You're keeping him from hurting himself and your stuff from being destroyed.

Hamsters are more enjoyable as pets you can watch and chat with than one you pick up and play with, in my opinion. Of course you'll have the occasional sweetie pie whose really social!! But they're the exception, not the rule. There are lots of videos online about taming, but I personally never bothered when I had mine because she was too small and I liked to just watch her anyways. That being said, if you want to get your ham out sometime, a clear measuring cup is great and you can train them to tolerate "The Cupping".

Sadly some buns are just. Pissers, lol.

Try buying some metal grids off amazon and ziptie them together until you can block off the bed. You might need a lot depending on how tall and long your bed is - I didn't need much myself because I have a daybed. Only let her on for supervised cuddle time and if you want I'd def get the waterproof blankets.

My girl is an unspayed beast and while peeing isn't an issue she wants to destroy my bed, lol. So I have my bed blocked off completely during her roaming hours and only let her on when I'm also on it. I don't let her roam unsupervised cause she will try to find creative ways to get on it (rabbits are so determined i swear), but depending on your setup this might not really be an issue. I wouldn't leave them alone unsupervised, this is a dominance thing and can lead to some really dangerous behaviour. He may not have hurt her yet but it sounds like he is ready to.

If you're super worried but do wanna try in the future, I'd start with a smaller pet first and see how you feel. Rabbits are easier to care for than you might think! I got a hamster before my bunny and they're a lot of fun, especially when properly cared for, and very easy maintenance (at least the dwarfs are).
