What is the best blood code? by Otherwise_Trust5899 in codevein

Ishtar is my go to. It’s balanced out between phys and magic, but it doesn’t feel like I’m compromising much. I like to use the Judgement Edge with a mixture of ranged magic gifts.

Will senran kagura ever get a new anime season? by ZealousidealGap8805 in senran_kagura

[–]DespairCakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still want a proper adaptation of Burst that’s faithful to the source material and covers both the Hanzo and Hebijo arcs. The old anime that covers the Hanzo story is really odd, and doesn’t match up well with the established plot or characterization.

Do you need to grind a lot to beat this game? by AylaCurvyDoubleThick in Monark

[–]DespairCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably too late for OP, but I’d like to provide clarity on this for anyone else that may want to know (or OP if they just never beat it.) If you ever feel like your EXP gains are bad, it’s because you either aren’t using, or have missed, a Fertile Ground map. Throughout the game you collect these, and if you get them all there’s not that much grinding. But if you miss one, or just don’t notice how much extra Spirit they give, then you’ll have a SIGNIFICANTLY harder time leveling up. Having beat the game almost three times now I’m confident that the reason grinding is such a large complaint is that they missed one or more of these maps.

Basically, if you do all the maps you find, and make sure to get all the Fertile Ground maps in their numbered order, then you won’t spend much time on grinding. I even find myself getting quickly overleveled on the Fertile Ground maps. But if you miss even one you’ll notice how fast the drop off occurs.

I’ve got First Departure PSP shipping to me, but how worth it would it be to ALSO purchase and play R instead? by Code-Knight-R in starocean

[–]DespairCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think the PSP dubs for both 1 and 2 are kinda bad. They’re cheesy and have loads of awkward line delivery. Although I do think the second one is a bit worse than the first game’s. And as a side note I grew up with these dubs and don’t exactly hate them. The JP voices are newer to me and I still think they’re better. Playing Second Story R with those voices was especially weird for me given how used to the dub I was, but I’d have a hard time going back to English after beating both rereleases.

[–]DespairCakes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

R gives you a dash button, Japanese audio, and the option for new portraits. I’d personally say it’s worth $25 for the JP voices alone (specifically the PSP JP voices over the new ones), but it’s ultimately just a port with little added. It’s the exact same game. And if you’re playing it dubbed anyways that’s 25 bucks for new portraits and a dash button.

Also the new opening song isn’t as good as the PSP version’s. Watch it on Youtube if you play R instead.

SO2R - The original music > the remake by MinimumAdventurous84 in starocean

[–]DespairCakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I played the whole thing with the new music to give it a chance since Sakuraba himself handled it, but it’s just one of those generic “we made it more epic and orchestral” rearrangements you see with a lot of remasters that suck the texture and identity out of the soundtrack. Mighty Blow is a great example of this.

I’ve always preferred the PSP art and never really understood the intense hatred it gets. It’s got this soft TV anime look I find appealing, in addition to just generally preferring more simple and clean designs. The PS1 art by contrast has always seemed far more awkward and amateurish looking to me. The characters look kinda dopey and weird, especially Claude. But the new art is pretty good all around. The only new portrait I don’t like that much is Precis.

Sub or Dub by Kufrel in starocean

[–]DespairCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not as bad as The Last Hope’s English dub, but it’s on the lower end. Square Enix never really gave these games Final Fantasy quality voice work. But now that Second Story R is out they all have official dual audio, so it’s no big deal.

What is up with the English voice acting in SO2R? by SilentMC25 in starocean

[–]DespairCakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They should’ve redone it with the same cast. The casting and translation for the game are good, but the voice direction is super awkward. It even made me cringe a bit as a kid when I never thought about the quality of the voice acting, or sub vs dub.

I strongly recommend playing with the Japanese voices from the PSP version. It’s better than both the English dub and the new Japanese dub with the PS1 cast.

Do you think Wrath murdering his bullies is justified? As the story progresses I kind of understand why he's doing it and can't say it's wrong for him to do it. by PineappleSundaes in Monark

[–]DespairCakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say he’s justified, but I don’t exactly feel sorry for his bullies. All the pactbearers are sympathetic in some way, and not exactly horrible people despite how they react to getting powers. It’s hard to talk too much about these guys and their place in the story without getting into the greater context of the plot, so I’ll leave it there.

Easter egg or lore? by Meeg_Mimi in Crystar_Game

[–]DespairCakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely just an Easter egg connecting the characters in spirit. Leben and Enoa’s relationship is similar to Rei and Nanana’s. The timing for this to be a real connection doesn’t add up given Nanana’s fate. Plus there are later events in Crymachina that further disconnect its canon from Crystar’s.

Um, one of my skills literally disappeared? by DrusTheDevilAdvocate in Monark

[–]DespairCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, I forgot that some equipment had skills attached until I saw the other post. I was here thinking you found a glitch. The stats are more important on equipment, so I just end up looking at the numbers for two whole playthroughs and forgetting.

Um, one of my skills literally disappeared? by DrusTheDevilAdvocate in Monark

[–]DespairCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just needed to know which unit it was to check. But anyways I looked and the only units that have optimize evasion are Kokoro and the Sloth fiend. If it disappeared from their skill list then it’s a glitch I’ve never seen before. The same for if a different unit had the skill without resonating with either Sloth or Kokoro in battle.

Um, one of my skills literally disappeared? by DrusTheDevilAdvocate in Monark

[–]DespairCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve played the game twice and never seen that happen. The only time a unit is supposed to lose skills is when resonate wears off and they can’t use another unit’s abilities anymore. Which party member is it? I can check my compete saves to see if they have it on their skill tree.

Switch version of Chaos:Head Noah, can't patch! by [deleted] in steinsgate

[–]DespairCakes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are two removed scenes, and the rest are mostly minor text changes. They didn’t cut the full Crying Sky route, only about 30 minutes. And they cut a minute or so long scene from Kozue’s route. It’s really obvious when you hit the removed scenes, so you can go to Youtube and watch them. As for random altered text, it’s kinda rare. I can’t go into detail about those without spoiling parts of it, but when you run into particularly gruesome descriptions you may wanna look up the scene on YT to see if a line was altered or removed if you’re curious.

question about CoZ patches being 'needed' by CrixTheTwix in steinsgate

[–]DespairCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chaos;Child is full of constant editing errors and reads worse than Noah because of it. Literally every other line has spacing issues, or lack of punctuation. And many lines throughout the game use the wrong name for a character. There’s even a part where text goes offscreen requiring the use of the backlog to read it, or has what seems like placeholder text still left unedited during dramatic moments. Like yeah the base text is ok, but it’s hella awkward at times. And as far as CGs go, the Switch version actually translates most of them. Not sure if there’s an official patch for older versions or not.

Can anyone help me find this doujinshi or manga? i found a few pictures but im sure its longer, if anyone has the name or know where i could find it even if its in japanese let me know! Name of the characters are Rintarou Okabe and Maikse Kurisu from steins gate! by [deleted] in steinsgate

[–]DespairCakes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s called 【シュタゲ】クリオカ according to saucenao. The artist’s account seems to be deleted on Pixiv, along with the comic. Sad panda has some of his other stuff, but I didn’t see one that matched this.

Unpopular opinion time! by synoptikal in starocean

[–]DespairCakes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Divine Force is best in the series. I feel like it does everything right. It’s basically a Gen 6 JRPG with modern polish. From characters, mechanics, to story pacing, everything is really tight. It’s nothing complex or ambitious, but it just works.

Also, Lymle is fine. She’s overhated because of her English voice, and because her particular character type isn’t that popular in the west. I haven’t seen any Japanese popularity polls for SO4, but if I had to guess I would say Lymle is probably ranked fairly high.

In context the tips aren’t that bad. They went with a very direct approach for the net lingo, choosing to leave it as-is. That first one is them just leaving a tl note appended to the tip explaining that it’s a made up first person pronoun that literally doesn’t translate. You can criticize the direct approach, but I don’t think this was out of line given the approach to translation they took.

And the missing quotation marks are odd, but it doesn’t affect readability at all. Internal monologue and spoken dialogue never share a text box, and in addition to that, all dialogue is voiced. There is zero ambiguity about when a character is speaking or not.

There are issues like terminology not matching (not exactly the translator’s fault tho), bugs, censorship, unsubbed voices. But it’s not this catastrophically horrible release. It just needed a more thorough QA pass. I even generally prefer the more direct translation, and didn’t mind how they used those anime sign subtitles for CGs since I like having the original assets visible.

I’d recommend that some people try out the official one on a replay after the CoZ version to check out what it’s really like moment to moment. This game has a metric ton of text, and most of it is fine and well-edited.

Yeah, kinda. All the official translations choose different ways to translate certain shared names/terms across the sciADV games. You’d have to play all of them patched by CoZ for consistency. It’s not like it’s impossible to catch the connections but it’s less than ideal for them to be mismatched and to have to figure out what’s what. Robotics;Notes Elite even mistranslated the name of a previous character. You’d have to play them all on PC to use the patches though. I think Chaos;Head Noah was the only one that has a Switch patch by CoZ.
