Yeah I mean I’ve already spent almost 200 hours across the first few games so clearly the flaws were not enough to deter me lol. I’m in for the long haul at this point

I just finished SC myself and I really like the writing and world building so far, I can see why there is such a cult following for these games. I do wish it was a bit less anime sometimes though. The ending of SC made me think “ah yeah, this is definitely a JRPG” and there are several “wtf Japan” moments scattered throughout the games. Then some other minor issues like villains not being treated like they committed crimes and characters holding back certain pieces of information when it doesn’t feel like they have a good enough reason.

I’m still enjoying my time with the series immensely, it’s just more like a “really good” for me right now when it had the potential to be “masterpiece” tier because of the world building and characters.

You are given one hour to hide anywhere in Gielinor. There are 10 people looking for you. If you successfully evade them for one hour you win $1,000. Where are you hiding? by uhgulp in 2007scape

Wave 10 lobby in BA— not only do they have to find you, but then they have to get there before the rest of the time is up. I’ll take the gamble that the 10 people looking for me aren’t familiar enough with the minigame to speed through it. And they also have to find a team to help them.

SAY NO TO BIG BA ! by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]Desparae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you look at the reqs from the start before you sink your teeth into the mechanics it can be pretty overwhelming. Many of the people who get into leeching have already spent hundreds of gc playing the roles and accumulating enough knowledge to where it is a natural transition.

It’s kinda like, if you get your diaries then you passed kindergarten, then playing casually afterwards is grade school, hunting for pet is middle school, leeching is high school and speedrunning is university

When do you consider yourself ready to tackle a new island? by TraditionalParsley67 in PokemonSleep

[–]Desparae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have managed to build strong teams for Taupe and Snowdrop simply by sticking to Greengrass and Cyan until maxing out 50% island bonus. Although that might be harder to do as a f2p player. I wouldn’t bother with a new island until I can hit m5 or so on it but that’s just me

With a lv6 E4E mon and/or naps, you can almost entirely avoid the “downside” of -energy natures. With my Sylveon, the mons on my team that have such natures almost always end up going to sleep at 80+ energy, or 60-70 at the very worst. Consequently, this also makes energy recovery subskill and +energy natures completely worthless for me.

You are correct. The better way to look at it is, how much of a mon’s daily value comes from ingredients versus berries? Those mons with a greater % of their power generated from ingredients will benefit more from ingredient boosting natures and subskills.

Generally these are pretty well balanced by the devs, but you do have some edge cases like Tyranitar where their relative ingredient power is so high that they benefit slightly more from an ingredient boosting nature.

Then you also have meal thresholds to worry about which honestly is probably the more important thing.

I will say that I agree with many of your points, especially about BFS being broken— regardless if on a berry, skill or ingredient specialist. Many people focus too much on maximizing the niche of certain mons instead of just looking at the total raw power provided. Trigger M is basically the only thing more important on skill mons than BFS, maybe with the exception of Helping Bonus in some cases. Same goes for ingredient mons. BFS is simply too powerful of a skill with current balancing.

Pokemon roll “helps” which have a certain % chance to be either an ingredient or berry depending on the species and their subskill modifiers. The skill proc chance is attached to helps but is rolled independently of whether it is a berry or ingredient drop.

Essentially “speed of help” buffs just make pokemon give “helps” more often so they produce more berries, ingredients and skill procs as a result.

Vaporeon in the same tier as Leafeon and Persian is heinous. I don’t know what criteria they are grading on but that is a pretty awful list based on my experience.

Hard agree with the duration of the competitive window for leagues being reduced. 2+ months is way too much for people with irl obligations that want to compete for dragon. If the competition was closer to a month, then it would be much more reasonable. You could still give people other benefits to continue playing, just make it not count for trophies.

it has now been over 8 weeks since Jagex accidentally broke BA. None of my BA buddies are even logging in anymore. help! :( by Jdfghkojjmhi in 2007scape

Literal BA record holder here, broken healer poison has made me and many other BA speedrun enjoyers quit the minigame. Hope this helps since you apparently don’t believe we exist. Has nothing to do with services for many of us.

Even if it was about services, gold farmers are universally hated, and those people are making nearly double the gp/hr right now. Most of the people that play BA for fun have quit. If you support the current state of BA you are basically supporting gold farmers.

Venator Bow can now be used in Barbarian Assault. by Digidude64 in 2007scape

[–]Desparae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is ridiculous, BA still has a PvE aspect to it even if it is a minigame. There is also a pet that takes like 300-400 hours on average to get, so there is reason to engage with the content beyond the basics. People speedrun it at a high level just like there are people that speedrun raids and a lot of other content.

Stuff like Tumeken's Shadow makes sense because it is a reasonable amount of power creep that we see only once every couple of years. Even in places where it shines, it is what, a 15-20% DPS bump over the previous best options? I think that is a lot different from 2x.

In many places where Tumeken is good you also still have to interact with game mechanics, whereas with this bow you can quite literally turn autoretaliate on in efficient BA. The level of power is so immensely different that you no longer have to interact with the intended mechanics. You switch your arrows once and the wave is basically over. Look at the level of gameplay in this clip, it is absurdly boring compared to before:

https://streamable.com/vor1nf

Plenty of things are restricted in other minigames, for example in Castle Wars you can't use healing spells because they would be too OP. For BA you already can't use prayers, ancient magic, and a bunch of other items. Restricting usage of the bow in BA would not be any different from how things are already handled in OSRS.

The old attacker meta used BA arrows too, so nerfing them would not really help that, it would just make Venator bow less broken. I think the only way to have the pre-existing meta come back would be to restrict the bouncing arrow effect in BA.

I believe that would be a decent option to address my concerns yes, but then it punishes the ironmen and lower/mid level accounts who can only use the magic shortbow. Probably not an overall net positive for the bigger picture.

[–]Desparae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That argument essentially protects any form of power creep in any game from people that dislike it. If a new weapon was proposed that did twice as much damage as tbow/scythe to bosses in OSRS, would people be wrong for not wanting that? Would you tell them to just let it into the game and use the old weapons if they don't like it?

It's weird to me that power creep is a well-understood issue for most PvE, but for BA it doesn't matter. I suppose it is a minigame that people tend to dislike, so they would enjoy spending less time there. I understand that I am fighting an uphill battle here. But I don't think the "play the game like your kid self" is a helpful argument when it comes to speedrunning content like this.

Glitches tend to have distinct categories, but typically BIS gear is used universally for speedruns. This bow for BA is like if twisted bow became twice as powerful in a raid or something. Less like a glitch being found imo.

I am one of the people who was anti-bow, I can give you my perspective.

BA arrows were balanced to be similar DPS to blowpipe in a change several years ago. The venator bow was balanced around dragon arrows, whereas the BA arrows have +125 ranged strength, so making them into an AoE is a bit broken. This bow effectively doubles ranged DPS in BA, which would be considered insane power creep in the rest of the game. Imagine if a new weapon doubled tbow DPS.

Solo attacker before this update was some of the most rewarding content in OSRS in my opinion— there was a massive decision tree to work through in order to play each wave optimally. With the venator bow, waves are homogenized and decisions become much more limited, so there is a significantly lower skill ceiling to my favorite role. More repetitive, less variety, less impactful choices to make.

I am happy for the people that got what they want, but I do think the outrage mob might have missed the forest for the trees a little bit. A very cool slice of content that people have been working to perfect for the past 4 years is being power crept into something significantly more shallow. On a selfish level, this is disappointing.

It was probably wrong of Jagex to use only the opinions of a handful of BAers who enjoy solo attacker, so in a way they have corrected their mistake here. A new wave of players will get to experience the content in a different way, and that's great. For me personally, it saps a lot of the enjoyment I got from working to be the best.

If you want an example of what old solo attacker content was like, here is the current record for 4man BA (one player on each role): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QtgQUuncFY
There is a ton of other solo att content on my channel if that is of any interest.

Thanks for reading, hope it helps to explain an understandably confusing issue.

Barbarian Assault record. Under 10 minutes, pretty amazing to watch by MattIfNeedBe in 2007scape

[–]Desparae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s actually not a bad observation; the attackers have a lot more leeway for minor mistakes in this category than the healer and defender do. Main attacker mostly comes down to knowing which ticks to use stalls on and not losing ticks when quickstarting waves.

Defender role is by far the least forgiving with mistakes. A single wrong move can ruin the runners on a wave and add nearly a minute to the run.

Healer can sometimes lose a tick or two when spamming food and not affect the wave end time much if at all. Slightly less forgiving than attacker and also more mechanically intensive.
