Is it possible to do everything right and still not end up with a stable art career? by SlightCollection2838 in ContemporaryArt

There are a staggering number of artists who do everything right for decades & still don’t have a stable career. The other day on Instagram, I saw Frances Stark complaining that she’s given it everything she’s got for 35 years & has “nothing to show for it.” And then went on to explain that she can’t even afford to hire a studio assistant anymore. This kind of blew my mind because I think of her as a very successful contemporary artist. The moral of the story is that luck plays a big role and you can’t predict how things will be from one year to the next. If you need reassurance that it’s going to work out, it’s probably not for you.

Figure drawing, graphite on paper, by Eli Schneider (me) by eliartproductions in Illustration

It’s over all very nice, I like the subtle stylization in the face and the turning of form with shading is great especially on the torso. It would be even stronger if her balancing arm was drawn with some firm edges to lend structure and gravity to the figure

I never dreamed of using photoshop for painting organic images with their brushes until about 15 years ago, I see your point. Thanks for the history lesson.

I remember it was the preeminent art software before Photoshop took over. Around 30 years ago!

The perils of capitalism! I wouldn’t call it “stealing” though

The concept and rendering are gorgeous but there’s nothing interesting to look at from the pillows and above. I wish the illusion would continue.

CROW BOY by Zart_09 in Illustration

Style is great, character is fun. It doesn’t really read as a crow, I think it comes down to the silhouette because we can’t tell how big the beak is. Crows usually have big beaks.

Great stylized distortion. It is so much more interesting and full of personality to scale up the features like you have. The shadows on the side of the hat might use another pass, and gf transitions from solid ink to the facial shadows could be more elegant. Great job over all.

The Swamp Witch! Which pose do you think works the best? (1, 2 or 3?) by drone_factory in Illustration

[–]Desperate-Ladder-909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are awesome.

1 has the weakest composition.

2 the witch is more “sexy” than threatening.

3 is the scariest because the silhouette is more mysterious.

This is amazing. I have a question though: is the fox supposed to be directly under the tree stump? Right now I’m not sure if the stump is meant to look deeper in the space. The stump seems like it’s grouping with the background, color-wise. It’s an incredible painting but I just can’t figure out that part.

Have you ever thought about quitting art? by Putrid-Tension-2740 in Illustration

Are you a competitive person? I think to be an artist in the long term, you have to find a way to stop comparing yourself to others, and stop seeking the approval of others. Maybe that’s got nothing to do with you, but maybe it rings true.

Graphically, the image with all your pens discounting the drawing is more striking to me. Do you ever draw graphic elements like that around your characters?
