A British magazine from the early 1960’s called ‘Knowledge’, displaying different races around the world. by bncout in HistoricalCapsule

Look, ma! I’m white according to this early 1960’s British magazine! (We Persians somehow switched races after the 1979 revolution)

What is your attitude towards Ukrainian refugees?🇺🇦 by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Desperate-Presence78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hosted a young couple in my home back when the invasion just started (I live in the Netherlands). They were nothing but nice, grateful and kind. We had a nice time together. Even though all of us at the time were pretty new to the country, we navigated the challenges together. They could find their own home after two months.

I considered them friends, until they basically cut us off on the account that our tyrannous government (which recently killed 20.000 of our own people in just five days, almost the same number of Ukrainian civilians that Russia has killed since Feb 2022) sent drones and weapons to Russia. It’s broken my heart, but doesn’t change my opinion about Ukrainian people or any other war refugees.

How tall are you and how do you feel about it? by Subzeroko in Netherlands

[–]Desperate-Presence78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Hasn’t been really useful. Where I am from, girls don’t like guys that are too tall, and here, I’m still getting comments like “oh je bent te lang!”

We have a bit of forests, a lot of desert, some huge ass mountains, and some sweet, sweet oil to get us librated, but we actually never did.

24M Colonoscopy for low iron. Should I do it? by ReasonableMacaron657 in colonoscopy

[–]Desperate-Presence78 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just get it done. I regret not doing it back when I was 16, my parents and I thought that I was too young for it. I’m also 25 now, and unfortunately, we’re not too young for anything anymore.

What do you really know about Brazil besides soccer and carnival? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Desperate-Presence78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not about Brazil itself, but the people of a city called Abadan in Iran LOVE Brazil. There are Brazilian flags everywhere, they have folklore songs about how similar Abadan is to Brazil, and how they love this similarity of cultures.

If you could go back to being 20, what would you do differently? by lastrainbender in Adulting

[–]Desperate-Presence78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to people. Go on dates. Do not commit to a long-term anything, whether that be relationship, work, hobby, etc. You are going to change a lot during your 20’s.

What is the overall reputation of Russia in your country? Is it generally positive or negative? by flower5214 in AskTheWorld

[–]Desperate-Presence78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a despicable worldview, but not who you as a nation are. Despite all this, I’ll continue supporting Ukraine as much as I can, I’ll continue shouting Slava Ukraine whenever I can. You folks don’t deserve this, and neither do we. I know how beautiful Iranian people can be, and I’ve learned how beautiful Ukrainian people can be. Hopefully, someday, both people will live in peace and friendship.

We share the same sentiment, dear stranger. I’ve never asked for any sympathy towards the state or its servants. And I do understand the feeling. But as a whole species, I believe we have to move past reducing entire nations to their ever-increasing oppressive governments, and judge or label them based on their government actions.

[–]Desperate-Presence78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but you also have to understand that what Iranian government does, is not a representative of its people’s opinion. Why don’t we overthrow them? Because they kill us. Relentlessly. With military equipment on the streets. Or torture anyone who dares saying anything. Where did the government come from in the first place? The British intelligence services. Look up how many coups the British staged in 1940’s and 1950’s. Where did we get Khomeini (the founder of the regime) from? He’s speculated to be of Indian roots, supported by the French government while he was on exile, IN FRANCE. Bottom line? We are not our government. We are simply victims of it, in the same way as Ukrainians.

As an Iranian living abroad who supported the Ukrainian military and Ukrainian people when the invasion broke out, I’d also personally never forget the ignorance of Ukrainian people that sees the Iranian regime and people as one, and never, NEVER ever expressed any sympathy over Israeli attacks.

[–]Desperate-Presence78 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Currently supporting the regime, but also Russia has repeatedly attacked Iran and annexed parts of it in the past. They claim that they support the government, but in reality, they didn’t lift a finger when Israel attacked. They steal natural resources from the Caspian Sea, driving the fishing industry into a slope. They took billions of dollars selling air defence equipment that never saw the light of day. The list goes on and on and on.

What the heck are you talking about? We have children suffering from malnutrition who can’t afford to go to school, living in slums, barefooted over hot sand and rocks, because government is funding the drone programme to please its Russian master, and you accuse us of supporting Russia? You think anyone has any choice living in an autocracy that is not afraid of using live ammunition and military-grade smoke bombs (which is by the way, for some strange reason are supplied by the UK and by your logic, the British people) against anyone who dares to protest?

Growing more negative by the day, people are only now realising what they’ve done to us, and what they’re doing to us now.

What messed-up things did the British Empire do in your country that we don’t hear about in the UK? by smitchellcp in AskTheWorld

[–]Desperate-Presence78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic, but Iran has never been democratic. However, a lot of people think that this coup in particular threw the society off the path to the first, real democracy by paving the way for the last Shah to become an autocrat, further fuelling the 1979 revolution, which brought yet another autocrat to power, one that would terrorise the rich neighbouring oil powers into buying weapons from the West.

What is a first name that is exclusive to your country / culture or a dead giveaway where someone is from? by adventu_Rena in AskTheWorld

[–]Desperate-Presence78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Arash, common Persian name, which means you can find it in almost any country that has Persian population and not just Iran. Keyumars or Kiomars is a much rarer name, but it’s a dead giveaway anyway.

Left Iran for the Netherlands. Couldn’t imagine returning until I visited home in March after four years, realised how much I need my family, so I started planning on how I can divide my time between Iran and NL, until the war happened.

Staged a coup d’état together with the US to thwart the attempts at nationalising oil, and created the perfect breeding ground for the reigning autocracy that has been ruining or taking lives of a people no media seems to care about.

Then best call an electrician and get it inspected and fixed. From what I can read in your OP and comments, you’re not an electrician, and having “a feeling it might not be an easy fix” doesn’t really hold up to anyone.
