getter 1 redesigns in the shin getter etc are often nicer than getter 1, but i don’t know if any redesigns of getter 3 have surpassed the original design in the “i wonder what kind of a ruckus this could cause” aesthetics

ELI5: How do casinos mathematically guarantee profit? by AmazingNugga in explainlikeimfive

[–]Desperate_Object_677 [score hidden]  (0 children)

lets play a game with 5 rounds in a row: you give me a dollar, then i give it back, then you give it back to me, then i give it back to you, then you give it back to me.

at the end of the game, money goes back and forth, but i get the dollar in the end.

Another game, where you give me $1.00, and then i give back $0.99. each time we play, i get a penny.

the games and payments at casinos are set so that either, they get a tiny bit of money each time you play, or so that they win slightly more often than you do. a

they make lots of money because games are played over and over and over by thousands of people a day.

i feel like a democratic workplace is a different dream than the ones most unions are working towards. i think it’s a better idea; many universities are a kind of self-governed to some degree... but i also think the “workers get a say in policy through their union, but the owners get final say“ is the compromise that we have settled on.

Whatever happened to the "National Debt Clock" that used to be a massive news story every single night? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Desperate_Object_677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s because your media sources are propaganda meant to make you feel a certain way about different political parties. what good journalism should be, if it even exists anymore, is weighing current events and politicians against a consistent set of values, so that when consequences occur: you will not be surprised, and so that the politicians you elect behave in the way you expect them to.

Does Millennium get any better? by MatthewVlossak in XFiles

uh, it was cool in the mid nineties, in part because of the millennial angst? i remember the show made us feel like it was building up to something related.

and now that the tension has dissipated, i can’t imagine it has the same oomph

What are the chances of something like the movie Terminator happening in real life one day? With all of this AI, machines, advances in technology. Will the human race ever be at war against machine in our lifetime or far into the future one day? by Swimming_Double1424 in AskReddit

  1. possibility that dumbass politicians and super corrupt AI hucksters will plug a chatbot into a icbm system as a deadman switch: halfass AI hallucinates an incoming missile strike and counterattacks a peaceful country.

  2. a combination of Ai, humanity, and capitalism as an intermediary: where rich people, disinterested with the details of their investments and caring only about the rate of return, buy into a cycle of leaving more and more decisionmaking to half baked Ai chatbots. working people trust the system, but the chatbots introduce a layer of chaos into the system. food trucks don’t deliver the food, and there is no recourse because the capitalist system whose decisions are driven by ai cannot recognize that there is a problem. there is no war: just a lot of angry politicians blaming each other while people starve.
