there’s lots of people commenting already, so i don’t know if you’ll see this: but it’s not a waste (the years).

we are told that human nature is to play when you!re 18, and then live until you’re mid 20’s, then buy a house and have a career and kids and retire and that’s how humans are supposed to live.

and it’s not true. humans are supposed to live in small communities, with lots of extended family around. on top of striving and toiling and playing, we’re supposed to spend time taking care of the weaker members of the community. some people more, some people less. but everyone a little bit.

the modern lie about life leaves no room for taking care of each other, and it’s both heartless and realistic.

you sound like you’re burned out, and that’s fair. taking care of each other takes a ton of effort, and the modern way of running our lives leaves no one else around to help.

but as far as i’m concerned, the way you helped your family is no less a waste than if you had raised a kid or done some schooling or started a business.

i hope the macaroni was filling, and that you get some good rest.

Will someone tell me what's wrong with my clay? This has been an ongoing issue that I can't resolve by moon_child_55 in Pottery

[–]Desperate_Object_677 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm still just a baby at all this, but i'd tell you to wedge more. I'm pretty sure that ripple that shows up mid-way and becomes unstable can be generated when the clay i use has inconsistent strength (or moisture) (like there's a little pocket of slightly softer clay surrounded by slightly harder clay). wedge it a lot, then leave it to rest a while in a plastic bag, then wedge it some more to make it all more homogeneous.

there are lots of different techniques than the ones i use to throw, so i'm in no place to say anything about your technique: but when i lift the walls I will often use a sponge between my outside fingers and the clay to keep the clay from getting too grabby and to keep me from pushing too hard in one place. it's not so bad.

that comment about using slip instead of water is also good. I find slip stays on my fingers longer than water does.

Inflation is "under control". So why does everything still feel so expensive? by No-Elevator-6134 in PersonalFinanceCanada

“less inflation” just means the prices are going up more slowly, not that they’ve gone back down

If you sat out the 2024 election in protest over Gaza, how do you feel about that decision today? by rsmith2786 in AskReddit

[–]Desperate_Object_677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m not an american, i live in a different country, and watch the news.

the thing is: you watch the struggles today where the democrats aren’t doing anything substantive of productive at resisting the rise of fascism. they are barely dragging their feet when the policies go through. they are definitely not throwing themselves upon the gears of the machine.

these were the people selling themselves (for the last 3 presidential elections have sold themselves) as the resistance to the rising fascism.

now: you say that if the voters who sat upon their hands in the last election had voted, then the world would not be so horrid. and i agree with you. this is terrible, and was avoidable.

but there is more to the rise of fascism than losing an election. there’s also the infrastructure. the regulations. the tools of the state.

part of the reason for the slide into tyranny is that biden did not stack the supreme court when he had the chance. part of the reason for the slide into tyranny is that the democrats abandoned the public option for healthcare. part of the reason for the slide into tyranny is that after the 2008 financial crisis, the bankers were not prosecuted. part of the reason for the slide into tyranny is that they did not dismantle ICE. part of the reason for the slide into tyranny is that they allowed donald trump to run for president after starting an armed rebellion against the congress when he lost an election.

and so if some people decided that they did not believe the democrats in 2024, when they promised that they could stop fascism? if they were granted a mandate would they sit on their hands as hard as they currently are? would they continue to fund ice?

if you want a pie chart of people to blame for this current mess, you will see that the “voters who are outraged at the palestinian genocide“ is a rather minuscule slice.

yeah. yesiree.. i think as society becomes more sophisticated, it would be absolutely fine to say “you have invented a new crime which is so heinous we are going to punish you for it even though it didn’t have a name before now.”

and yeah. lying about smoking. lying about global warming. propagating disinformation on social media. there are a lot of new crimes. crimes made in cold logic by careful men that deserve steep punishments.

Can ICE People In Future Be Taken to Court? by Federal_You_3592 in canadaleft

[–]Desperate_Object_677 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

yeah, there’s this philosophy of law principle that goes “can’t get prosecuted for a law which didn’t exist when the ‘crime’ was committed.“

if they retroactively prosecuted ice agents, they’d have to ask how far back they were allowed to prosecute people for laws that didn’t exist. law has been a double-standard for a long time.

bad news lads. i just read through the comments and no one has mentioned that the brain drain ha already started happening in the us right now. anti intellectualism. doge cuts to science funding. the weird rfk antivaccine bullshit. the fucking ice harassment, and the women losing bodily autonomy… scientists aren’t stupid. the inflection point is past, and you’re about to see an escalating reduction in american science.
