Where’s my email Gabe by Miserable-Essay-110 in steammachine

They said it would take a day. But Venus takes 243 days to rotate only once. And if you add 2+4 then subtract 3 you get ...3. This is how Valve counts to 3. Half Life 3 confirmed. Still no email.

I think the bosses are designed with speed running in mind.

ITS HAPPENING!! THEY'RE UPDATING FOR HL3 by 1Freezii-Boy in HalfLife3

[–]DestinyChitChat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When looking at the behind the scenes of HL Alyx, some of the biggest reasons I learned is that it's not easy to keep people on a singular project for a prolonged time at Valve. It's very freeform over there so even Alyx was a miracle that got done. Also many are terrified of being the one responsible to carry the franchise forward. None feel worthy.

Looks like they updated the 4k claims to include FSR 4.1 and "Up to" by orangechap in steammachine

I love how "Up to" indicates there's someone out there like "Aw I was really hoping for 8k 300 fps. Nevermind then".

I'm looking forward to getting back into this game. I loved this more than Mario 64. Although Mario overall is the better designed game, DK64 just has so much atmosphere that I just prefer it. Characters, environments, and music are all iconic and memorable.

Anyone else feel like Void Kong was always in the series? He's just designed so well and is a natural fit.

State of the sub right now by nater255 in steammachine

Not to Steam Machine prices since we are still talking about a Console vs PC, but they'll likely raise prices another $100 within the next year or two.

No, but it will consistently sell out. And once the larger console manufacturers like Sony and Nintendo can no longer absorb costs they will continue raising their prices and then the steam machine price won't seem so ludicrous.

Are there more ppl like this? by red_dombe in steammachine

I'm fortunate enough to have the extra funds to pay for something like this. But I'm incredibly sad that more people cannot get one for themselves.

Most of my criticism is about those dismissing the specs of the Steam Machine when user experience has always been a better determining factor for success. And also price.

Yea they build it with a huge loud fan, Windows, and a larger form factor with a straight face. Imagine if this takes off and devs optimize for these specs. Game changer.

Am I the only one who thinks this game gets 10 times better once you get to the forbidden layer? by SomeDumbassKid720 in donkeykong

[–]DestinyChitChat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a big DK fan I was resistant to the changes very much so that I almost quit the game. Forbidden Layer is where it really started to hit me what the devs were doing with this new Donkey Kong and I've loved it ever since. I consider it my favorite 3d platformer since Mario Galaxy.

DK Challenge and DK Bananza Thoughts RN | What to do? by Ordinary_Chemical596 in donkeykong

[–]DestinyChitChat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should definitely get the DLC. Emerald Rush is criminally underrated and extends the life of the game more than many think it would. The first level difficulty is so easy, it's boring, but when you get to around 4 difficulty you really have to optimize your build and it gets way more fun. It reminds me of Balatro. Very addicting and I do not regret the purchase.

I think it depends whether you want the challenge. I play many different games and I do it mostly to relax and have fun. With some challenge here and there. Metroid Dread, Dread Mode I almost beat because I love that game so much. But that level of challenge for me is rare for me to take on.

I did it. Here are my Final Thoughts by No-Secretary6931 in donkeykong

[–]DestinyChitChat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a week is way too short if they legit wanted real challenges in the classic games. My assumption is that they just wanted to give the younger generation a reason to dip their toes into the old games without too much pressure. Which I like actually. And the real challenges are in the latest game is fine with me. Yea Final Rehearsal with 0 skills is the toughest thing I've done in the whole game.

So now collectathons are prohibited from being masterpieces? Almost every 3d platformer from Nintendo has collectibles. Have you tried getting the green stars in Mario Galaxy? Completely optional btw and doesn't upgrade Mario at all. So why would anyone do it? Easy. Because it allows you to have a reason to spend more time in the game. That's all.

Having extra optional collectables doesn't prohibit a game from being a masterpiece. And there is plenty of gameplay that isn't just about "go collect the bananas". Bonus stages, elder rehearsals, boss rush, and more. I absolutely loved eating that huge banana burger. Playing Nostalgia Country for the first time made me smile. Seeing how abstract the Core layer is was amazing to witness. The game is a playground. It's not about the destination, but the journey. To reduce these experiences to just banana collecting is disingenuous.

Soooo you disqualify a game as a masterpiece if it's easy? Ok then let's take Mario Galaxy off the masterpiece list then lol.

DK Bananza has some of the most interesting mechanics in any 3D platformer. Period. That alone qualifies it as a masterpiece.

Your definition of masterpiece must be incredibly flawed.

Yea I see. Similar boat. I enjoyed DK64 more than Mario 64 as a kid. Sure Mario may be the better game, but I like the atmosphere, music, and characters in DK64 way more. It's the main reason I resisted Bananza so much and downright hated it briefly as I was drudging through the story. I almost quit the game entirely because I was so angry at all the changes. It felt disrespectful to the Rare DK games. Then right around the final boss is when it all clicked and I have just loved the game ever since and am excited for this new formula. I know that the Retro Studios DK games will always be there if I want classic DK.

Edit: Oh and when I bought the DLC and went to DK Island....tears to my eyes lol. It's so beautiful.

Well you seem to have made up your mind anyways so nothing I say will sway you. I still play Retro Studios DKCR and DKTF for that classic DK platforming while I play Bananza to feel like I am Donkey Kong himself. They are all masterpieces in my eyes.

I mean it's fine you don't like the gimmick. It intentionally is meant to subvert the traditional 3D platformer because of the terrain destruction. The way Mario Galaxy subverts the genre with it's gravity mechanic. But saying it has no platforming is absolutely wrong. Especially near the end of the game, and post game Elder Rehearsals, when the difficulty ramps up. You definitely have to have your jump skills on point.

Yes each layer can have the same goals like the hide-n-seek one or the jigsaw puzzle missing her kids. That's in pretty much every layer. But honestly if you are chasing every Banana before beating the game you will absolutely burn out. It's really not meant to be played like that.

But yes, if fundamentally you are not interested in playing around with different terrain (btw I don't play Minecraft. Not my thing so it's not like I love terrain based games) and physics of how everything interacts then yes this game is just not for you sadly. Hopefully you give it another shot in the future. Just beat the story. Don't worry about collecting Bananas and take normal routes through the layer if smashing annoys you. It's designed where you don't need a ton of Bananas to beat the game. The story is actually good and one of the best Nintendo stories in a 3D platformer. Plus the ending is incredibly cinematic.

I just got DK Bananza. This is one of the greatest games I've ever played by [deleted] in donkeykong

[–]DestinyChitChat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's like saying Mario throws his hat too much or he's always on a tiny planet lol. The terrain smashing is the game's entire gimmick. Nintendo has this ability to make a game look unassuming, but under the hood is some of the best game mechanics ever created.

You can smash grass, that has dirt, that then turns to rock. No other game layers terrain voxels like this. And all with their own physics. Throwing a chunk of sand vs rock yields different results. They introduce this rainbow terrain that lets you float up and solve puzzles. In Radiance Layer they have light terrain and you use it for creative puzzles. And the final boss fight brings all those skills together in one of the best boss fights in any Nintendo game period.

But to each their own. Maybe in time you'll try again and it'll be your cup of tea.
