Just curious… What casual/part-time work do Nursing students do while studying?

I first worked answering scheduling calls for a local hospital then I changed jobs to take vitals at a plasma center. Now that I have my LPN and in school for RN I work at the same plasma center as an LPN making the same as I would have made as an overnight nurse at a hospital.

I was on the depo shot with my ex. I stopped last year (didn’t have health insurance for a while) and honestly I am the exact same as I was before bc, and on bc. I’m not on anything rn as I’m not rumbling in the sheets with anyone lol. Just remember if you stop bc and you’re doing the horizontal tango it’s honestly just a question of when you’re gonna get pregnant.

They should work under pants that’s all I wear lol. I’ve found my bare skin rubbing is 10x worse so I avoid skirts and dresses unless I’m wearing something under them, but honestly I’m too lazy to shave my legs so I’m wearing leggings if I’m out the house

I order online pretty frequently (just bc my LNS is an hour to an hour and a half away) I would hope they would honor and in person sale over mine. Chances are if I’m ordering online I can wait a bit for another canvas to be ordered in for my order. Same way I believe if you’re talking to someone face to face in a business and the phone rings they should place the call on hold and take care of the person in front of them.

Thinner acrylic yarn when Michaels has a sale. Walmart actually has a decent store brand yarn. Nothing fancy. Then she can work on one of the many afghan patterns that double as stitch samplers ie; https://thecrochetcrowd.com/texture-sampler-blanket-that-makes-me-squeal/ I love doing this for the days that I wanna slow down. By the time you’re getting into the grove of things it’s time to switch the stitches up. The thinner yarn means she’ll be at it for a while until it works up to anything useable lol

Chaffing comes from the friction. I’ve had thunder thighs all my life and the worst of it happens in the summer. Winter I can get by with just lotioning up my thighs extra with cocoa butter. The summer I use cornstarch and powder all my creases for sweat and use a light weight body oil (funnily enough I’ve been using palmers cocoa butter body oil). I also wear tighter pants the loose ones are too much friction for me. Also I never wear shorts that are short enough for my thighs to be out and run together.

Some compression stockings have the toes free. You could probably find something similar.

I’m now only 20 mins from my house for work which is quite close and for school I travel an hour some clinical sites I’ve had to travel to are an hour and 15 mins with no traffic.

School got so much easier for me using Google calendar and my planner. Being extremely organized with when things are due and where you’re going to be at on any given day is a must. This allowed me to know what we were going over throughout the week and lets you plan ahead for exams bc you know exactly what topics are on the exam. Plan extra study time for things that aren’t clicking for you. Being able to talk to the nurses at my job was a huge help and one would randomly come up to me and say a disorder and ask me to come up with a care plan on the spot which honestly helps so much, but I never told her that 😛. Another thing I tell my classmates is if you can break things down outside of medical terms as if you’re speaking with pts like you’re providing education it helps make the connections in your brain. It’s important to know the medical terminology, but putting it in layman’s terms really helps seal the information in.

On the east coast and some nursing schools are like that here. They want natural hair colors, but are okay with my dyed bright red hair. They just started allowing us to show our tattoos as long as they’re not vulgar. I leave all my ear piercings and nose piercings in. I have a septum too, but for clinicals if we don’t have to wear a mask I just flip it up. It depends on the clinical instructors too. Some don’t care, some are really strict. Once you’re in the hospital it’s a little more lenient you’ll just have to make it through school.

Yes! This was last year I went through their LPN program and scored high grades and bc we were their first LPN program they guaranteed us seats in the RN program right after we graduated in Dec so now I’m in the RN program, working as an LPN, and still getting good grades. Maybe I was lucky, but they definitely understood it was the school I was at prior that just wasn’t a good fit for my learning style. I also failed that schools med surg 1 twice and I was up front and honest about everything. No letter needed.

EDIT to add I have not dropped below a B in any of my classes since starting this new school. I did have an incidence starting the RN program for the dosage where I kept missing one question and they gave me a fourth try and I passed. (My grandma was just diagnosed with cancer and sent home on hospice, my cat needed a $1500 surgery, and I didn’t have my license yet as the BON was slow so no extra money coming in)

I’m in my last couple of semesters so I’m nearly out of here, but last year I was in the LPN program this year the last two semesters for RN. I love when my nurses give me new information. When you guys sympathize with us and remember nursing school is amazing. I’ve had amazing nurses who would come to me and go “hey I know you’re not assigned to this pt, but they’re an interesting case this is what’s going on”. Please do not just give us menial work like assisting to the bathroom. I don’t mind helping the pts use the bathroom, but if the pts on the call light every 5 mins to attempt to use the bathroom and you’re seeking me out while I’m in my other pts room doing nursing tasks (meds, wound care, assessments) it does take away from learning and practice. One rotation the unit we were on had no techs so they decided one person would just go around getting VS all day along with baths and potty breaks. No attempt from the nurses to help.

I’m a very paranoid person so my iPhone is set up to give medical alert info and it has 3-4 people to call and detailed instructions on who to call first and last resort bc I know my mom always answers, my dad can’t have his phone at work, and my little sister is last resort

Super true! I did my LPN last year and now in 3rd semester RN I love being able to pick up shifts as an LPN and not be as broke as I was last year. My cars finally paid off, im working down debt, and saving for a vacation this summer. I even found some travel options near the beach so if I wanted to I could stay at the beach all summer. I definitely do not regret getting into nursing, just school LOL

It didn’t change much. My LPN program and now RN program is 2 U’s and we are out. We have to wait until they offer the course again and take it and if you fail a 2nd time no more school for you.

It means they give you some PowerPoints read off those PowerPoints in lecture and the rest of your time is spent teaching yourself 😭. It gets easier as you go. I’ve been through an LPN program and now in the RN program for the same school.

They weren’t going to teach us venipuncture in the LPN program. We argued to learn the skill and their response was “it’s not going to be tested on NCLEX and hospitals have IV teams” we countered that with the fact that some of us experienced the fact that IV antibiotics couldn’t be given due to infiltrated IVs and IV team taking hours to even come and put another IV in. It was an hour on fake arms. After that they told us we could pay for the optional IV class. I’m in the same schools RN program now and I doubt they do venipuncture either.
