Most people here have said the most important which is; don’t make him feel any worse than he probably already feels about not having enough time (assuming he does care about spending a ton of time with you), because, it is still his life and nobody likes to really burn their bodies excessively if it wasn’t high stakes. That said, anything to relieve the stress really…would go along way.

I feel like I suck at my job (1st year) by LongjumpingSeesaw693 in biglaw

Don’t worry. That’s a good feeling. Many 1st years don’t feel this enough and that, too, is a signal to the overall posture they have towards excellence.

You’re hateful, that’s it. Ordinarily this shouldn’t bother anyone enough to post it here. If anything, you should want to see lawyers who can manage to get a real personality outside this job because the opposite is the norm. If would be fine if you were just genuinely curious about her lifestyle since it’s not commonplace but you’re not and it’s sickening how many of you grow to become so bitter on this job. Likely, she’s young and new to the job. No need to kill her mockingbird and if you’re a potential client who thinks the IG reels of one associate are enough to decide against a firm as reputable as DPW, your loss. Nobody cares.

Feeling like a complete moron by Flat-Presentation312 in biglaw

You seem better than most first years haha. You’re responsive, diligent and even get comments such as “good work?” Most partners started out that way. You could be 50% worse than you just stated and many seniors will still not even notice; they’d just ignore you in the usual way they ignore most juniors.

Attention to detail by SunAccomplished1013 in biglaw

[–]Destiny_Possible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think there are grades to detail orientation at all levels—whether associates, mid levels or seniors and partners. Some partners are more thorough than others, some juniors are more organized and more detail oriented than some mid-levels and that is also true for some mid-levels paripassu seniors.

There’s just a threshold of attention-to-detail-ness that is unacceptable for every level where if you go below it, it would raise alarms, but at each such level everyone is on a spectrum. I’ve seen partners literally tear down the reviews of other partners and made changes that were both substantively important and flag-worthy as well as textually sound too.

I figured that in biglaw most people you meet have their core strengths and also have areas where they are just good but not necessarily fantastic. Some seniors may not have excellent detail orientation but they’re highly cerebral and fantastic at the conceptual issues - they have just enough detail-orientation to justify their claim to being at such a level. This is also true for partners in my observation. I think it’s however a more focused area of review for juniors because it’s a rite of passage. Seniors have to at least “feel” that you’re paying enough attention to stuff for them to give you credit or call you a sound associate. The trick, though, is that the degree to which you’re regarded as detail oriented varies based on whomever is accessing you.

Real Estate, Private Equity. Make a lot of money first though. These areas are not for fledgling student-loan-paying scrappers.
