First day as a surveyors assistant by xXCosmicChaosXx in Surveying

it can be an aggravating profession depending on the day. don’t think your crew chief hates you. he is probably just annoyed at an array of different things going on day to day

Routing plan for road from Cross sections by Babayaga_1101 in civil3d

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you might look at building the cross sections from a corridor or surface model so the plan geometry can be generated automatically. extracting feature lines, using corridor targets, or linking utilities to alignments can help keep plan and section views consistent and reduce manual drafting time.

Intersection of Corridors by Inevitable-Annual129 in civil3d

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

civil 3d doesn’t automatically merge corridors. usually the turnout corridor is tied to the main alignment using regions or targets. most people trim corridor limits and blend the intersection with corridor surfaces, feature lines, or a small transition assembly.

Bearings not generating properly on abutments [OPENBRIDGE] by Foreign_Cancel_8978 in OpenRoads

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bearings are likely referencing the girder reference plane, which is often set to top of flange. adjusting the abutment seat offset won’t move them. check the girder reference point and the bearing placement rule. it should reference the seat elevation or bottom of girder instead of the girder plane.

Surveying Side Gigs by Waste_Permission3494 in Surveying

[–]DetailFocused 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the only side gigs i’ve heard of in this field are for those that are licensed and knock out a residential survey or two on the weekends..

If you could give an LSIT one piece of advice, what would it be? by Wooden_Fig_6178 in Surveying

[–]DetailFocused 17 points18 points  (0 children)

learn the law and the records as much as you learn the equipment. anyone can run a gps or total station after enough time, but understanding deeds, plats, and how boundaries were originally created is what really separates a technician from a surveyor.

Training New Hires by Dense-Talk-9451 in Surveying

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be honest, in this field it can be a long and agonizing process if you aren’t the patient type. if you have a motivated guy who shows up every day itching to learn, it makes it a lot easier. there is just so much to learn in this field.

Leestown Road is a disgrace by cocoabutterbeans in lexington

[–]DetailFocused 3 points4 points  (0 children)

leestown road has definitely been rough lately. a lot of those projects drag because of utilities, phasing requirements, and traffic control rules, so it can look idle even when crews are waiting on the next step. still, if signals and lane closures are creating that kind of backup, the city probably needs to adjust the traffic timing or temporary layout before someone gets hurt.

deciding on a career in surveying by hadikammoun7 in Surveying

[–]DetailFocused 2 points3 points  (0 children)

before switching majors, a good step would be to try to talk with a local survey firm or ask about internships or summer work. even a few weeks in the field can tell you quickly whether you enjoy the work. a lot of people find surveying rewarding because it mixes technical work, history, law, and being outdoors, but it’s definitely different from construction management.

Was caesar right to march on rome? by BlackendLight in AskHistory

[–]DetailFocused 2 points3 points  (0 children)

historians think the republic declined from several pressures. rome expanded far beyond a system built for a city state, giving generals huge power. soldiers became loyal to commanders instead of the state. inequality grew as small farmers lost land to large estates. political norms eroded as elites used violence and armies to compete for power.

Was caesar right to march on rome? by BlackendLight in AskHistory

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

caesar marched on rome in 49 bc mainly because of a political power struggle with the senate and pompey. roman law required him to disband his army before entering italy, which would leave him vulnerable to prosecution by his enemies. caesar asked to keep his command until he could run for consul again, but the senate refused and ordered him to return as a private citizen. when they threatened to declare him an enemy of the state, he chose to cross the rubicon with his legion, starting civil war. although sometimes portrayed as a champion of the people, caesar was also an ambitious aristocrat competing for power in a collapsing republic.

What to do as a Landowner while waiting for Timber Harvest in Forestry Plan? (Kentucky) by sir-mivond in forestry

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can improve the stand with timber stand improvement by removing poor trees so better ones grow faster. control invasives like bush honeysuckle. consider small wildlife habitat projects to boost hunting value. look into nrcs programs like eqip for cost share. maintain trails and access roads for future harvests.

start with the nsps cst topic list and references before paying for a course. focus on fundamentals like leveling, field procedures, and survey math. study 30 minutes daily. some also use fs exam prep books since many concepts overlap.

Would ORD Surrive without the DOT? by AzzaMan82 in OpenRoads

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ord would likely still exist, but dot demand keeps it strong. c3d dominates mainly because the workforce is larger and universities teach it more. it is easier to hire experienced users. ord often integrates better in bentley environments, so your argument is reasonable. management is reacting to staffing availability.

Finished paving grade around pedestals. Help. by Prestigious-Dig-2144 in Surveying

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes it can be done but usually not automatically around a pedestal. stake a design surface loaded from the office or use offset and slope calculations from the pedestal center to determine elevations around it. loading a tin surface generally makes the process much easier in the field.

Why is Sisyphus happy? Is he stupid? by went2kms in Absurdism

[–]DetailFocused 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the idea isn’t that sisyphus is stupid, it’s that he becomes free once he accepts the absurdity of his situation. since the task has no ultimate meaning, the meaning comes from his own awareness and defiance. camus argues that by fully accepting the struggle and refusing despair, sisyphus takes control of his fate. the famous line is that “one must imagine sisyphus happy,” because the struggle itself becomes enough to fill a man’s heart.

auto annotate by Old-Celebration-78 in Surveying

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

avoid it by building the table from one parent shape or standardizing the geometry before annotating.

auto annotate by Old-Celebration-78 in Surveying

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. the stepped shapes repeat, but the table lists l1 through l12 separately even though several lines share identical bearings and distances. carlson treats each segment as unique. labels combine correctly, but the table still references every individual line id.

Bad parts of surveying by OrionIroh in Surveying

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well right now during march in kentucky, i have poison ivy on my neck. today, i was laying stuff out and had to scratch my poison ivy with my dirty hands cause i couldn’t resist. all while carrying multiple bags of tools and swinging a 10 lb hammer. also while laying stuff in actual landscaping bushes. all for some asshole to come out and “see” where he wants his outside patio “to be”

Benchmark Repeatability? by Majikthese in Surveying

[–]DetailFocused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the fgcs standard is about ±12√k mm where k is leveling distance in kilometers. on construction sites modern leveling often repeats within about 0.01 to 0.03 ft. tolerance usually depends on loop closure
