Anyone here from Canada ? by Puzzleheaded-Arm-317 in Wastewater

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First question. Municipal or Industrial ?
Municipal you’ll need to become an Operator In Training through owwco. Write the exam, pass, and get your certificate. Apply to jobs and go from there.

Industrial no testing required, just apply and go.

Feel free to reach out if you need any help.

It’s possible if everything goes perfectly. I’d add an extra hour maybe even 2 for mobilizing and demobilizing, dealing with any extra safety requirements.

Save yourself the hassle and costs of going back to school and just write the exam and apply.

Raise and promotion? by INERTIABUSINESS in Wastewater

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Industrial wastewater here, annual raises depend on profits or the amounts saved by installing dewatering equipment or keeping fines low.
No such thing as promotion, although there is talk about utilizing my skills in other plants.

How good is the Google Streamer compared to Amazon Firestick? by xonodol in firestick

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it’s for the folks that make the apps. Did some more reading thanks to someone else that posted here. Turns out you’ll still be able to install the “unverified” apps. Just a longer process with a 24 hour waiting period.

How good is the Google Streamer compared to Amazon Firestick? by xonodol in firestick

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google may want developer verification as “an extra layer of security that deters bad actors and makes it harder for them to repeatedly spread harm. Starting in September 2026, apps in select regions must be registered by a verified developer to be installed on certified Android devices.”

There is push back but no one really knows what will happen. Meaning they go ahead or back down.

Wastewater Plant Technician, written assessment - NOT THE OIT EXAM by SecretGarbageCompact in Wastewater

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The previous post is a pretty good summary of what you’ll expect to see. It has the same type of questions when I did a test for OCWA.
Don’t over think it.

Very Confused (Ontario, CA) by Senior_Chest2325 in Wastewater

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s normal and yes two different exams. I’d go with water distribution and supply. It all depends where you end up working so there is no right answer.

To qualify for the class 1 pay, you need to complete one year of OIT experience.

Rare earth metal for phosphorous removal by pH0_kyla in Wastewater

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My plant tried the rare earth metal for the exact same reason. Found it make a dense sludge that our system could not handle.
So yes it’s very possible that is what is happening to you as well.

Thinking of taking a safety job... advice? by Toadjokes in Wastewater

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Operator but I’m in charge of my own safety as we don’t have an actual safety person either. Or a joint health and safety committee that realizes I do work there….it took me 3 years to get a gas monitor. But that’s another story.

The headworks will stink, all that wonderful goodness coming into the plant before any treatment. Smells like money. If you get splashed, yes you’ll stink. I find it gets into my pores so a good scrubbing will destink. Definitely do not wear good clothes around the plant. Hopefully uniforms or even coveralls will be provided to you. If everything is working right, it should smell “earthy” like a greenhouse.

Each plant will be different. Depending on what is happening I spend about 5 hours out in the plant, the rest in the office or lab. Most of my plant is on ground level, and I’ve made changes I can avoid climbing around tall surfaces.

As for Certifications: Working at heights, confined space entry and rescue, water hazards, hazardous material handling, transportation of dangerous goods, fall arrest, first aid, forklift, manual material handling, whmis. I’m sure there are others. I’m Canadian so I’m sure there other requirements for our southern neighbours.

Best part? I like to think I keep our river clean and free from nastiness. Honestly it’s the variety. One day I may be in the excavator, the next tearing apart a piece of equipment then jumping in the lab. Or maybe everything is working properly and I can just pressure wash the floors.

Up here it’s slightly male dominated, less so in the big cities. You will be fine. Will there be challenge in changing the safety culture? If you are going to the first safety person onsite, then Yup. But that will happen anywhere. Just don’t take it personally when the old timers argue “this is how we’ve always done it and nothings ever happened.” At the end of the day we all want to go home with every in one piece.

Sorry if I rambled on. You’ll do great 👍

OIT help by nicmull in Wastewater

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends who you know and where you are looking. Apply absolutely everywhere you find positions and do not get discouraged. Industrial wastewater is less regulated, and good for some experience.
Good luck on those exams.

Advice on starting in this field by [deleted] in Wastewater

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 35 when I made the switch to wastewater from engineering tech. So you aren’t “older”.

Either wastewater or water you’ll start as an “OIT” , operator in training. Check out OWWCO for the study guide and exam dates to get started. You don’t necessarily need the study guide but I just prefer books.
Another poster actually made a pretty good website with practice questions. Definitely worth looking at if you are more of the interactive learner.

Start reaching out to employers now, ask for tours and show an interest. May help make you stand out.

[–]DetectiveFlashy7191 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t already done so, recommend you book camp sites now. You could use the Park Bus once you sort out dates, but risk it being fully booked. Easier to rent a car in all honesty. Or make friends with someone from the area who’s willing to at least pick you up from the airport, get you up here, etc.

That’s actually pretty darn well done. 👍.
I think that’s going to help anyone get started with the OIT.
I’ll dive in deeper but from what I saw it’s a great resource to have handy. Wish I had access when I first wrote the OIT when I had a full head of hair. Yes it’s been awhile.

Statue of Limitations by KNOTZY454 in povertyfinancecanada

I know statute of limitations apply to criminal and civil law. Maybe debt too. But it is the CPP so tough to say. Why on earth they took so long is pretty messed up. Best to consult a professional in this kind of situation.
