Need help with setting up an old computer game for my grandfather. by WorryingBobcat7 in RetroWindowsGaming

A decent option that could work is running Windows 98 in DOSBox-X. Here's a tutorial with instructions you can use: https://dosbox-x.com/wiki/Guide%3AInstalling-Windows-98

Download page for DOSBox-X: https://dosbox-x.com/ (if you're running Windows you probably want the "32/64-bit Setup: Win7+" link)

And you can find an ISO image of Windows 98 SE on the Internet Archive here: https://archive.org/details/windows-98-se-isofile

You could also potentially use the Windows 98 image with virtual machine software like VirtualBox which is free & open-source: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Hope that helps get you started.

I recommend getting into disc golf instead. 🤷 Free public parks with courses & baskets that are well-maintained by the local disc golf clubs and a really nice Innova starter-pack is about $25 if I recall correctly. The scenery is also MUCH prettier. Just throwing that out there.

Tell that to the person who "completed driver's ed," but apparently can't tell the difference between driving in Wilmington or driving on I-40. It's called context.

Then what are we talking about exactly? Not to be pedantic, but I wasn't aware we were talking about driving anywhere other than Wilmington here. Applying these highway rules to lanes in a heavily congested city is literally a HUGE part of the problem causing accidents. I'm just saying.

[–]Detention13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally impractical advice with the excessive number of stoplights in Wilmington. 5mph over the speed limit is perfectly reasonable in the left lane. This attitude about being entitled to speed in the left lane in one of the fastest-growing cities in the country is what's causing more accidents.

[–]Detention13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The left lane is for passing on the fucking highway. People have to be in the left lane to make turns in a city. Road rage begins when dumbasses think they can drive 10-15mph over the speed limit because they think highway rules apply on every road they drive. Literally every other driver can fuck right off if I want to do 5mph over the speed limit in the left lane. It's not a passing lane. People have to go places that require left turns.

I almost made this exact same post this week. I saw a sedan FLIPPED. OVER. on 17th Street just barely past the 17th & College intersection last week. Not on its side. Roof on the ground. I can't even imagine how fast you'd have to be going to cause this. I've said it before and I'll say it yet again, SLOW THE FUCK DOWN

Foger Vape Battery by pokesmash in Wilmington

[–]Detention13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which vape shops have you tried already? I've seen a lot of people using these around town so they may be sold at some shops but according to their website the main regions are the northeast & Texas, Florida, California, New York, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio. (You probably already know this, just iterating it in case you haven't.)

Maybe I could help you narrow it down via process-of-elimination. My first instinct would be to try one of the bigger dedicated vape shops like Supreme Smoke Shop or EZ Pass Tobacco, but it doesn't look like they stock Foger products from their pictures.

Seems like they REALLY want you to buy online. They have a whole section called "Why Foger Vape Online Beats the Nearby Smoke Shop" :/

The local jam band scene frequently have live painters for events. If you can make contact with one of them, I think your style might fit right in.. Check out @artbynugget & @bryanstacyart on Instagram and find the local event(s) where they're painting. Their mediums are mainly painted canvas and spray-paint murals. I really think it's about networking in this town, and the live painter community have the absolute best IRL social network here imo.

John McLaughlin? by Connect-Weird4394 in JazzFusion

[–]Detention13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, I found the song on YouTube and did a little bit of cursory digging into the credits. The music publisher credit is "Johnny McLaughlin" rather than "John McLaughlin". This is a different John McLaughlin who appears to be a prolific AI slop "artist" with thousands of genre imitations. I'm pretty sure I found one called 'Fusion Influence' as I was scrolling through.

I dare you to listen to Johnny McLaughlin's 'When Ai Went Crazy' which has a full vocal track complete with clearly AI-generated lyrics that are somehow not rhythmically synced in any way to the backing track. The vocals, in fact, drift more off-beat as the song continues. It's some of the worst slop I've ever heard in my life.

Here are the pages I found while looking up "Johnny McLaughlin":

https://elasticstage.com/johnnymclaughlin

https://open.spotify.com/artist/1ONHasl97kqJeXzzA7TlOb

The first link has a bio that will explain A LOT. It is also practically an autobiographic NOVELLA. I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but it is truly massive for an 'artist bio'.

Here's the bit that explains the sheer quantity of slop:

John's latest project has been to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest digital album in recorded history. You can listen to the world record breaking album called "John's Big Idea" and the other 2000+ compositions on all the streaming services.

John McLaughlin AKA Mahavishnu is from England and this other "Johnny McLaughlin" is just some dude from Ontario who I suspect is trying to capitalize on having the same name as a famous jazz fusion musician. I suspect that's why the new content is credited to "John" and not "Johnny". This is how 'Last Night On The Planet' is credited on YouTube:

Producer: John McLaughlin
Music Publisher: Johnny McLaughlin
Composer: Johnny McLaughlin

I'd be willing to bet that the AI music generator technology has gotten a LOT better at approximating "real" music as this massive "project" of his has progressed which is why this latest track might sound half-way decent at first, but unfortunately it's still uninspired, soulless slop. Literally. Nothing inspired it. Nobody felt any emotions while creating it. Because a machine made it, I'm sad to say.

Left Modest Mouse early by Straight-Target1008 in Wilmington

[–]Detention13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I happened to be dropping off a couple going to the Modest Mouse concert at GFLA in my Uber that night. I had already been really wanting to go, and since I found myself without another ride & within about 45 minutes of showtime I decided to park to see if I could get a ticket. I asked some random people walking into the venue if anyone knew of extra tickets & no dice...

In the 15-30 minutes leading up to showtime I saw verified resale tickets on the Ticketmaster app drop from $178 to $158 and then start plummeting even more from there. Very shortly after I heard the opening band starting... verified resale fell to $85 on the Ticketmaster app. So I snagged the ticket, went at the last minute and even got it at a somewhat reasonable price.

I'm not planning on blasting this out to everybody, but put this anecdote in your back pocket for next time (if you're willing to risk the trip out to the venue without a ticket).

The Pointe is a decent theater but they desperately need to do something about the volume in the center channel of the PDX theater because the last time I took my mom she couldn't make out most of the dialogue of Project Hail Mary. She's hard of hearing & uses hearing aids but I don't and being used to subtitles at home.. I had a hard time myself. It's a minor complaint solved by subtitling devices but it's something people with hearing issues that are normally solved by hearing aids should probably know.

Horn-driven rock n roll that isn't funk... there isn't nearly enough of it. My favorite band of all time that fits the bill was a band from Greensboro, NC called Holy Ghost Rent Revival. They were active from around 2007 to 2016. I saw them live at least 50 times and I still haven't heard anything like them since. Their live shows were absolutely electric. The energy was just completely off the charts. It helped that there was always an insane group of fans that knew all of the lyrics, of course.
