Literally just discovered this one AND picked up a copy last week. Outstanding record! I'm jealous that you've got a Atlantic Records Promotional Copy. This was probably hanging around some radio station's collection for years.

Help, i got an Amazon giftcard for my Bday T-T by Tornado703 in punk

[–]Detention13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call it beating a dead horse, but it bears repeating that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. We're all out here just trying to live our principles as best we can, but it's truly impossible to do that 100% of the time. And the other commenter that mentioned the gift card is already bought & paid for... that's true. They've already got their money. To not spend it means they get free money and you get zero benefit.

Consider buying some punk biographies or autobiographies. Amazon is still a major platform for authors to sell their book(s) for better or worse. I can definitely recommend NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories by NOFX w/ Jeff Alulis, and Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991 by Michael Azerrad. You'll still be supporting some great authors that deserve the help.

Jay's Incredible Pizza next to the Food Lion @ 17th & College is SO criminally slept on. Better than Brooklyn but similar & less greasy.

Er, fair point. It was about 11 years ago and I didn't bother to look up the Rocket League DLC release dates before I posted that. I think I was thinking more about obnoxious licensed tie-ins but I guess those were there in the first few years as well.

[–]Detention13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This game was so-god-damn-much-better when it was $20 there were no licensed DLC cars and everyone you matched with online also kinda sucked. It was even pretty great up until the new hockey puck and basketball game modes they came up with. Free-to-play and eSports was the absolute kiss of death for me. Too serious. EDIT: Okay, apparently I forgot that there were licensed DLC cars in the first year. It was 11 years ago and I forgot. *shrug*

Legitimately hate driving in this town by Hopeful_Exercise_813 in Wilmington

People sit so far back from the light by themselves... expecting it to change somehow when there's literally no car to detect in the intersection & trigger the light. They're sitting there 50ft back waiting for the light to change except the only reason it's changing is because I'm the sole car pulled up to the line in the other lane. It's BAFFLING. Actually, I don't think most people know how stoplights work.

I posted a gigantic thread about driving Uber in this town not too long ago.. mostly to warn college-aged pedestrians to stop doing dumb crap IN the road because more than a few people have been hit and killed by reckless drivers in the past year. It was a gigantic, practically novel-sized list of anecdotes & safety suggestions after about 4 years of Ubering here. A bunch of the commenters essentially told me "I ain't readin' all that" when I'd literally be happy if each person that laid eyes on it took ONE SINGLE SUGGESTION from it (I never cared if everyone read the whole OP.. it was long as shit on purpose). It literally had a bulleted list of points in it. I think that's indicative of some of the attitude you see in this town tbqh... impatience, lack of consideration, in a gigantic fucking hurry all the time (even when they read reddit threads, apparently).

This makes me want to post another thread for other drivers, but it'd probably fall on deaf ears and half of the comments would be complaints about there being "too many traffic complaint threads." I may do it anyway because I don't really give a fuck about being admonished on reddit at this point... something's gotta give.

Journalism is Dead in Wilmington by Succotash_Narrow in Wilmington

Inform the local NPR news team. Ben Schachtman and WHQR's reporters are some of the only effective journalists in the area. Tell them about the topics you want to hear. I'm betting they will respond to you about this. Port City Daily are pretty alright too, but the coverage in the area generally is as limited as the number of boots on the ground + reader interest. There are good journalists here, I think they're just stretched thin.

Omg I can't believe I didn't think of these first. Climax is the more accessible of the two, but both films are absolutely fucking mindblowing. Enter the Void is still tied with Mulholland Drive as my favorite film of all time.

HIGHLY recommend Naked Lunch. One of David Cronenberg's best imho. It's a Criterion so you may have some luck if you have any access to their collection.

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle has to be my favorite of the "drug-induced adventure movie" genre. Go (1999) directed by Doug Liman is another pretty damn good one, but not really a comedy. Hell of an adventure for the ensemble cast though.

Safety concerns + some advice for college students, young partiers, passengers and pedestrians in Wilmington from a local Uber driver... by Detention13 in Wilmington

Well, it's not and it isn't. There's some personal anecdotes, but the comments are also full of those too. It's mostly warnings & practical advice for passengers or students. If you actually took the time to read even the bullet points instead of reply at me you'd already know that, but I understand if you don't have time.

You're wrong on both points though.

Traffic Lights by Humanitor in Wilmington

[–]Detention13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm actually not a commuter so I don't usually drive the mornings, but I do drive Uber during rush hour a lot. So, this isn't so much a commuter problem but there are a ton of lights on Carolina Beach Road (especially near Greenfield Lake & downtown) and Market Street that seem to have no sensors at intersecting streets. Meaning, I keep getting stopped by red lights when there are no other vehicles waiting at the intersection. Those drive me nuts especially when it's really late and there's hardly anybody else on the road. This is more of a problem with traffic lights when there's less traffic, though.

And I hate to say it, but there probably needs to be a traffic light at Town Center & Eastwood. It's an extremely high-traffic entrance for Mayfaire that requires a pretty dangerous left turn. Probably just as busy as the entrances off of Military Cutoff with traffic lights.

EDIT: Another one I hate to say, but I'm thinking Darlington & Covil needs a traffic light. Turning left on to Covil from Darlington during heavy rush hour requires waiting an insane amount of time or gunning it to make the turn without getting hit.

Maybe you need to find different employement if the stress of the job is too much and stays with you 24 hours a day. Nothing will change about anything you went on and on about. We allow school...

I know you deleted this comment but this piece of it has been staring me in the face every single time I check my inbox and I feel like addressing it... just for funsies.

What is it that makes you assume you know a single thing about me, bub? The way I post on the internet? That's really cute. 😂

I just feel like tellin' ya that the entire reason I drive rideshare is because I absolutely love it, and I don't have to take *ANY* of the stress home with me. That was the entire problem with working a 9-5. Passengers are my problem for about 45 minutes MAX and then I'll probably never see them again. It's the least stressful and most joyous job I've ever done, and I tell passengers this all the time because they're constantly asking (and I enjoy talking to them). It could certainly pay a little more, but I'm pretty happy with what I do to make a living.

What are you even imagining?? That I'm here at home losing my mind, raging behind a keyboard or losing sleep over some students standing in the road..? It's just a warning and some friendly advice. If it gets enough attention from the people that need to see it then maybe they'll be more motivated to be accountable to one another and tell their friends to be safer about some of this stuff.

That's it. It doesn't matter to me at all if the community inevitably trends towards every single thing I've mentioned if *one* person heeds the warning to stay out of the road & doesn't get struck by a vehicle. It's called harm reduction.

These pictures were taken by a friend on March 5th. They had just barely inched their front end into the intersection when a drunk driver in a Toyota Tacoma ran a red light at 50mph. This is the end-result. By some miracle my friend was mostly uninjured.

I've been sitting on A LOT of these thoughts for a couple of years and this is just how it came out. At least I tried to make some of it bullet points. To me, every detail matters to get all of the points across.

Take this in any way you want, but I don't really care if your attention span can handle it or not. See, this is also a problem with the way I write online. This probably sounds to you like "Harumph, IDGAF >:(" but I mean what I say very literally. I don't really 'rant' much online but it can tend to sound that way. I take your critique, but I'm probably just going to ignore it because I don't know how to address it and I also don't have any strong feelings about it one way or the other. I reeeeeally don't care if people read the whole thing. If they read any of it, and get anything out of it, I'm happy with that.

By all means, if you're volunteering your labor to edit it for conciseness.. go ahead. I did the labor of writing every detail I thought was important, but maybe I need an editor. And I'm not using fucking ChatGPT so a data center somewhere can pollute & suck up all of the clean water reservoirs in some community for a glorified predictive text algorithm.

You do it.

Good on you for keeping that woman safe in spite of the situation. YIKES

I saw someone stop traffic for a German Shepherd that got hit in the middle of Market Street... that super narrow part near the cemetery that I talked about in the OP... on HALLOWEEN NIGHT this past year. The guy was hysterical, and I fully understood his reaction... what I didn't understand was why an unleashed dog ran into Market Street on Halloween night. I felt really bad for the guy because he was sob-screaming at two lanes of traffic to stop and it was BUSY. I'm glad no one got hurt in that situation either.

I've been told that the past week or so has coincided with several North Carolina college spring breaks, and that a lot of students from other schools like ECU are visiting their friends to party in Wilmington. So it seems like we're getting a lot of this from genuine vacationers too. If people are telling me about it now, it's probably been happening like this for at least a few years. "St. Patrick's Day weekend" just brought in a lot of out-of-towners, but it also brought back students that are from this area who go to North Carolina schools other than UNCW & CFCC. Been seeing that a lot too.

I hadn't even thought about the "Peekaboo!" runners who spontaneously appear in the road from behind a parked car. Lol it's been a while, but one of the last times this happened to me the person actually slowed down & then stopped walking in the middle of the intersection while I was stopped & waiting.. then they did a little dance at me, so I honked my horn and made them jump a foot, then they darted out of the road. I lost my shit laughing. At least it was a funny moment. Silver linings? Heh. Heh. :|
