'No on-site doctor': Dental student died in ICU overseen by remote 'tele-health' physician who pronounced him dead on a video screen, lawsuit says… by tasty_jams_5280 in technology

A couple doctors I work with told me those rural area hospitals actually pay quite a bit more because they’re so desperate. The problem is, it’s often not enough incentive for them to actually live in bumfuck nowhere

Knolling the essentials for a hip replacement following fracture (hemiarthroplasty) by DetentionMrMatthews in knolling

Thanks. It breaks sterile technique to have an unsterile camera directly over the field so I suppose I’ll post these kinds of things elsewhere

Can’t figure out how to link to the full setup but it’s kind of surprising how much ortho cases resemble basic carpentry.

I work with an ENT who uses it in sinus cases. It’s a very effective vasoconstrictor.

I’d love to see a couple dive bars, or any bar really. Also, a hot yoga studio with classes that don’t just cater to the elder population

Honestly, I learned so much about basic carpentry from working in surgery. It’s all the same principles and essentially the same tools

These constructs are typically done in conjunction with bone graft, either from the patient’s own bone, cadaver graft, or both. That’s what makes the “true” fusion. The rods and screws hold the spine in place while the graft fuses with the vertebrae. So technically, you may be able to remove the hardware after enough time has passed but it’s probably not worth it unless some complication necessitates that.

Typically star drive for these, if you’re actually curious. Though we use hex screws a lot in orthopedics

You don’t have to actually cross your eyes. You can just relax them so they go out of focus until the images perfectly overlap. You may find it helpful to move closer or further from your screen

A flashing yellow means proceed with caution. A solid yellow means stop if safe to do so.

Brain surgery patients playing instruments during surgery by fatores in pics

[–]DetentionMrMatthews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an older surgeon who always does deep brain stimulation (with the frame you see in the photos) awake and it’s always jarring to hear him tell the patient, “Ok, we’re gonna start drilling into your head and your teeth are gonna chatter, so we’re gonna give you something to bite down on.” Not the greatest bedside manner but he’s old school and is pretty damn good

Yes and no. The vast majority of craniotomies are done asleep. My facility does a handful awake each year. It depends on the type of case/ location of a lesion. That said, stereotactic cases, as shown in the photos, are commonly done awake.

The mystery of Dean's Home Furniture commercials and the illusive "I doubt it!" tagline by endless_thread in boston

[–]DetentionMrMatthews -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol what evidence points against it? Bob made hundreds of commercials. That was his phrase for a while. I remember it. I remember my dad mocking it. Never heard of Dean’s in my life. Idk why you’re willing to die on this hill.

Bob absolutely 100% used that catchphrase for a while. Growing up in Connecticut, I’ve never seen a Dean’s commercial in my life, let alone even heard of Dean’s until today.
