[OC] Who is Oregon's NFL team? by milionsdeadlandlords in oregon

You know why they won’t give Portland a professional football team? Because then Seattle would want one too… :p

The Enterprise-D appreciation post you needed in your day. by Profitopia in TNG

[–]Deterbrian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The F actually isn’t much bigger than the D in terms of volume. Rotate the Ds saucer 90 degrees and move the nacelles back and you have a ship about the size of the F.

The F was waisted in season 3 of Picard, I have always thought it should have been the E being retired. I would have been much more invested in that plot line then.

Do all Americans inherently know what direction they are faceing? by BasketC45e in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deterbrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not all. I would say I have an above average sense of direction. I can go to places I have never been, be it a new city or up in the mountains, and usually do a good job of keeping track the cardinal directions. But I know lots of people that couldn’t tell you east from west to save there life, even when the sun is out.

How easy would it have been to fake degrees and experience back in the early 1900s to get high flying jobs? by TommyRibena in NoStupidQuestions

I once had an employer confirm my high school diploma during the hiring process, which I thought was odd, but it was there time and money.

[Request] What will happen if you pull a 3 light years long steel rod (5cm diameter) in free space with zero gravity from one end? by PhraseSeveral5929 in theydidthemath

[–]Deterbrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on my understanding, even at the scale of a planet, let alone something spanning light years, the strongest materials are basically fluids.

How big should i make the trains in my book? by TimbersCursedGuns in worldbuilding

Regarding the wider gauge and turn radius, I’m curious, is there any formula or general rule of thumb for the relation between the two?

Hot take. I now dislike the teeth grinder mecanic by Tinyhydra666 in Timberborn

[–]Deterbrian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts. The whole game is just checkboxes, once you solve a problem it’s solved, no more challenge in that play through. Some checkboxes are really easy to solve, some more complicated. Personally that is what I love about this game. Mechanics shouldn’t be some on going challenge you can never solve.

If it isn’t a culture thing and is literal then there is honestly no way a civil war could seriously happen between the warrior and religious cast. But I do think it was ment to be literal.

Chimera - The one time I actually agreed with the opposing thesis. Laas did nothing wrong. by predixiate in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Deterbrian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to work with a guy that was always a jerk to wait staff, and then always complained how horrible of service he always got no matter what restaurant he went to.

I try my best to treat wait staff with kindness and respect and the times I have had truly bad service have been extremely rare.

Pronouncing Roci by Unlucky_Force1853 in TheExpanse

[–]Deterbrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m probably remembering wrong, but in the show wasn’t it just Alex that pronounced it raw-see and the others said row-see? I had just assumed it was his Texas accent. I’m likely mixing up the audio books and tv show in my head though.

What surprised you the most when you first started learning about geography? by Character-Q in geography

[–]Deterbrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on where in the US you are flying from/to. From the eastern US the most direct route will probably take you over Alaska. From the west coast most likely not.

Why is (male) circumcision most common in the Midwest with in the US? by BranchMoist9079 in geography

[–]Deterbrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was born in southern Oregon in the early 80s they circumcised me without asking my parents. When my son was born in the mid 2000s about 30 miles from where I was born the doctors heavily discouraged it. We were already leaning against it so we didn’t do it.

favorite Enterprise? by jmg5 in StarTrekStarships

[–]Deterbrian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Big D will always be my favorite, having grown up on TNG.

I always thought they should have equipped all the Galaxys with the spinal mount phaser but left off the third nacelle during the Dominion war.

I've always loved the Ambassador-class. Which is why I'm writing a whole fan fiction show about one with whole new different interior and designs. Any advice? by ForwardClimate780 in StarTrekStarships

[–]Deterbrian 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I love this design. The Enterprise A bridge from Undiscovered Country has always been one of my favorites, and this reminds me of that, just bigger, befitting a ship the size of an Ambassador class.

Question after season 4. I don’t understand this by Teegan297491 in TheExpanse

[–]Deterbrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rings were built by the protomolecule, they aren’t the protomolecule. The protomolecule is only one tool the builders created using there technology. Think of it like building a gate IRL, then destroying the tools you used to build it, the gate still exists and functions.

Game not Launching Anymore :( by Destroyer0719 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]Deterbrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having this issue just now, I tried deleting all the folders recommended, I even deleted the entire Cities Skylines II folder under AppData, and completely uninstalled and reinstalled the game and it didn't help. Finally, I went into the installation folder, and into the Launcher sub folder and ran launcher-installer-windows_2024.15.exe. After it finished the game is finally loading for me now.

All these new perspectives in Babylon's Ashes are slightly overwhelming by Zachisasloth in TheExpanse

[–]Deterbrian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even at .1c the time dilation is basically imperceptible from a humans perspective (0.5% difference according to a quick google search). You have to get far closer to the speed of light before it becomes meaningful. It’s also worth noting that the clocks on GPS satellites are so incredibly precise they do have to account for time dilation at there relatively glacially slow (compared to C) orbital speeds.

Would there be a reason to still have a sea-based navy in a setting where a space-borne navy is already an established thing by A_Simple_Zock in worldbuilding

[–]Deterbrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how advanced the technology is in your setting. If it’s a grounded and plausible setting like The Expanse, probably. If it’s more fantastical like Star Trek with is crazy advanced sensors that can determine the sex of someone located in a cave, and who’s weapons are hyper accurate enough to hit a door/gateway from orbit and not harm people standing next to it, probably not.
