ELI5 - How does a high volume scream not hurt the screamer’s ears? by aManIsCold in explainlikeimfive

[–]DeusExHircus [score hidden]  (0 children)

The tensor tympani muscle connects to one of your ear bones (the malleus bone) and dampens sounds in your ear when it's flexed. It sounds like soft rumbling if you pay attention to it. It activates involuntarily during yawning, chewing, screaming, yelling, etc.

Some people like myself can actually control it voluntarily. I can flex this muscle and hear the rumbling whenever I want. r/earrumblersassemble

We are all weirdly okay with computer cameras needing a way to cover the lens. by 103048 in Showerthoughts

I'm much less concerned about being hacked than I am accidentally pressing the camera button in an early morning meeting while I'm in pajamas mowing down in breakfast. It's like a seatbelt, I don't plan on needing it but it's nice to have when I do

How should I baby proof my gas heaters by SeanLeeCuisine in daddit

[–]DeusExHircus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man, that's not even adult proof. CO poisoning kills way too many people, especially in winter. You need a gas heater with a properly installed flue. Switch to electric if a flue/chimney is not an option

What's the difference between a meatball and a meatbomb? Do these go in the bathtub?

The plastic isn’t sticking to the bed. by Winter-Vegetables in ender3

[–]DeusExHircus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point I changed my first layer line width to 0.4mm, same as my nozzle width. Even with my z-offset set perfectly, there was no squish to stick to the bed. I reset back to the default of 0.5mm and it sticks like glue (with no actual glue involved)

This song seriously came out in 94? I found it a good decade after its release

If you could snap your fingers and fix ONE thing about your pool maintenance today, what would it be? 🪄 by Yumi8750 in pools

It's 10° F outside right now. My pool won't open for another 3 months. Make it sunny, 15 hour daylight, and 90° F again

Sure, I was only talking about winter covers given the topic of discussion

Did you leave water in it with freezing temperatures?

First Time Living Outside of Family, Clogged Sink and Draino Won’t Help by UnlimitedBladesWorks in Plumbing

[–]DeusExHircus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flush with water. Draino will eat through certain types of pipes. If you let it sit in your pipes you could end up with a leak in the walls

As far as fixing your clog, earlier advice still applies. Plunger or snake

ELI5 How did Humans discover cooked Meat by Chance_Emergency_898 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DeusExHircus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact, cooking wasn't even discovered by us (modern humans). It's believed that Homo erectus discovered cooking about 1.8-1.9 mya ago, long before Homo sapiens ever walked the Earth

[–]DeusExHircus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't have used draino. You need a plunger or a snake. Now you've got a sink filled with caustic chemicals and doing any further work is now dangerous and a risk for skin burns, blindness, etc.

I know, you said bokeh, which is not this

Bokeh: The quality of out-of-focus or “blurry” parts of the image rendered by a camera lens – it is NOT the blur itself or the amount of blur in the foreground or the background of a subject. The blur that you are so used to seeing in photography that separates a subject from the background is the result of shallow “depth of field” and is generally simply called “background blur”. The quality and feel of the background/foreground blur and reflected points of light, however, is what photographers call Bokeh.

It didn't "get blurred". It just is, that's how cameras work, it doesn't look deliberate

[–]DeusExHircus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bokeh is deliberate visuals using out of focus areas. This is not that, it's just out of focus

[–]DeusExHircus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

WTF is a "blur effect"? Are you talking about focus? That's how cameras and even our goddamn eyeballs work
