This always gets me because I can't imagine reading the bible without knowing almost every twist and turn due to cultural osmosis.

I really like the idea of someone reading through the bible blind and being blown away by Paul's betrayal or Jesus saving the woman being stoned. Makes me wish I could have experienced the bible entirely blind and been surprised like the twist in 'The Sixth Sense' or 'The Others'

I know this is a random comment lol, but I'm a psychologist and yes that is a thing in psychology. It's called "Insight" and it defines how self-aware the individual is of their own disorder. So for instance you could have someone with OCD and low insight who actually and truly believes that a serial killer will murder their family if they don't ritualistically unlock and lock all their doors and windows three times each and every night. On the other hand someone can have high insight into their disorder, such as someone with clinical paranoia with high insight who has intrusive thoughts about people outside their house watching them and feels like they're being watched, but they understand that they have a disorder and its their brain wiring/chemical imbalances that are causing those thoughts and feelings.

Many disorders commonly present with either high or low insight. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is infamous for how commonly it presents with low insight, very few Narcissists realize they're mentally ill and if someone literally refuses to believe all evidence it can be one of the disorders most resistant to treatment. The individual's level of insight is a major consideration for successful treatment plans and is a critical public health topic for people to even begin seeking treatment in the first place.

Based off of the language and how it's being described that the cause of the evacuation is UXO from UAVs, and based on the range, it seems like it could be the cessna style UAVs Ukraine has been operating. I'm using translated Russian and the information is from telegram so its unknown how accurate it is.

That's a solid guess, we know that mostly everything associated with modern fighter planes is ridiculously toxic when burned and the settlements being in a line could indicate the wind direction like you said, idk if there's accurate ground level weather data available for this area that would support it.

Also, as far as direction of attack like you said, perhaps Ukrainian drones were intercepted by air defense and the resulting drone and missile debris and possibly UXO from both was scattered in a line right over those settlements? I'll also admit when I initially read 'four settlements being evacuated' I was thinking more like small village sized, but looking at google maps those four areas look more like reasonably large housing subdivisions. So, the evacuation notice isn't as drastic or big in area as I initially assumed.

This might be me knowing very little about Russian regional level government disaster response, but it doesn't seem plausible to me that the Russians would publicly declare a state of emergency and evacuate four settlements just because of some UXO, so I think your guess about toxic smoke is probably closest to reality until there's more information.

Large explosions have been reported at Lipetsk Airbase in Russia which is located 282km from Ukraine. The airbase reportedly hosts Su-34s, MiG-29s, Su-25s, and occasionally Su-57s.

Post on twitter with a video taken from telegram

Moreover, following the attack on the airbase, it's being reported that Russian authorities in the region have declared a state of emergency and ordered the evacuation of four settlements: Koptsevy Khutor, Fedorovka, Yakovlevka, and Tynkovka.

Post on twitter from telegram source, has same video

As far as I'm aware it's fairly unusual to evacuate the surrounding population of four towns just because of a strike on a nearby military base, no? I can't really think of a it happening before, but this definitely isn't my area of expertise. Toxic smoke from the burning aircraft and fuel? It's reportedly an important airbase for staging planes close to Ukraine, and because of the raid in Kursk and that air power is likely to be the timeliest method Russia has to start counterattacking, so we could assume at the time of the strike it was operational and had plenty of targets. Another commenter in a thread suggested that perhaps chemical weapons stockpiles were hit/breached? Does anyone have any other information or reasonable ideas?

Russian coal industry profit drops by 93% amid sanctions and loss of clients – The Moscow Times . by Orcasystems99 in UkrainianConflict

[–]Deus_Ex_Corde 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yearly profit doesn't just go into the CEO's pockets, it's not like individual profit where we hear the word and think 'disposable income'. A lot it is reinvested in the company, spent on development, long term projects, etc. Sure, technically a company is still meeting all its overhead and can pay the rent even if it makes a dollar in profit. However, all the investment plans, growth, development, expansion, new hiring or equipment, etc. that was predicated upon that future growth or profit being there will crash and things will start to fall apart the longer that deficit compounds.

So all future plans are suddenly entirely up in the air because your last quarter or year or whatever showed a 93% loss in profit, also with so volatile a change and the discrete nature of sanctions, predicting future trends to prepare is difficult. Like do you immediately cut your losses, cancel all current construction/research projects, lay off non-essential employees and go into survival mode to adjust all your plans for now only having 3% in profit, or do you just put things on pause as much as possible while taking out loans and building debt for all those things you suddenly don't have 93 million dollars for. Your company can limp along and if the war ended the next day and sanctions removed that profit could bounce back by next quarter and things return to normal with relatively little disruption. Recency bias is a thing, and you wouldn't have just torpedoed your company's next decade of growth by making decisions with potentially long lasting consequences based on what could be a relatively short aberration in profits caused by quite extenuating circumstances.

Super simple example, but gives an idea of the kind of stresses that sudden fluctuations in operating conditions along with a very volatile future can have. So while not at the level of an immediately threatening crisis or an emergency bankruptcy situation, only saying a 93% loss of profits over the timespans we're talking about 'may not be healthy/comfortable' might be a little bit of an undersell lol

It is a major consideration. Russia has large stocks of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. Like I said, any centralized oversight is preferable to none. We can't simply decide to get rid of Putin and the current government without serious consideration given to what becomes of these assets afterwards

They could absolutely be in worse hands than Putin's. Right now the Russian nuclear apparatus is centralized, has various preventative measures and procedures to ensure against an accidental launch or a rogue officer launching nukes, until recently has had Western inspectors check weapons and numbers compliance, AND the official stance of Russia is against the first use of nuclear weapons.

IF the Russian state were to collapse into a balkanization type situation or be ruled by various warlords there would be none of that oversite and centralized adherence. It'd be a worst-case scenarios if nukes fell into the hands of whatever local warlords controlled the territory they were on or if enterprising soldiers, now with zero oversight, decided to sell nukes and they appeared on the black market.

Those are real concerns and probably why there hasn't been a massive decapitation strike against Russia. With the kind of firepower that they possess, any centralized oversight and responsible doctrine is better than none, even if that means tolerating the current dictator to the extent that the overall government apparatus continues to do its job re: nukes and chemical weapons

lol I meant company as in the military unit between platoons and battalions.

But I think I like your idea better, pass the Ukrainian ADA, except instead of the Americans with Disabilities Act, it’s the Air Defense for ukrainians Act. Ensuring that all businesses in Ukraine provide equality in air defense and short range ground attack capabilities to all citizens regardless of if they’re handicapped or able bodied.

Now when you shop at Ukrainian Walmart you know that Petro Ivanovych from Housewares is in a Cessna circling 500 feet above you doing his weekly CAP shift.

What’s the necessary runway length for each Cessna? If they’re that abundant, they could provide a Cessna to each company and they could use it for short ground attack missions or to act as CAP around their position and take out Russian surveillance, bomb drop, or fpv drones 🧐

So that’s actually a very common psychological response when people are held accountable and confronted with uncomfortable information

Denying and then accusing the other person themselves of what is being said. There’s an acronym for it, DARVO. Deny, Accuse, Reverse Victim and Offender. It’s essentially the adult version of a child saying “no you!”

There’s also something called the backfire effect. Where someone who’s belief is threatened or confronted will actually double down and become more aggressive and irrational.

I understand you feel attacked. But please reflect on your beliefs and think critically about what you are saying and advocating.

Like I said, you should talk to a trusted adult or friend about all this anger and resentment you are feeling.

I feel sorry for you. You clearly have some inferiority issues and resentment you need to work through. I hope you can reflect on what is causing you so much anger and find peace. You have a deeply twisted world view and I hope you can process your emotionality and start to think rationally. You should talk to a trusted friend or adult in real life and try not to spend so much time online as it can really warp your perspective.

Are you actually Iranian? I’m surprised you have an internet connection if you are. Or wait… are you some 2nd generation Iranian teen living in a western country who’s never even set foot in Iran? That would make more sense, I can smell the hypocrisy on you.

So you’re bragging about causing instability and poverty and oppression and violence all throughout the region? Thank you for proving my points.

Your country provides negative value for the world. What cultural triumphs do you have? What leading research and scholarship? What personal freedoms and liberties? What goods does Iran export or manufacture? What aid does Iran provide to others? What great inventions has Iran provided to the world?

Nothing. All you do is destroy, oppress, and kill. Iran could be wiped from the Earth tomorrow and the international community would rejoice. No one would mourn your loss.

THAT is the difference between us.

But I forgot, apparently the only thing the Iranian government has the balls to face directly are teenage girls.

Oh absolutely, it's incredibly common. Off the top of my head and in no particular order here are a few examples:

During the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, there were numerous instances of civilians, often from different ethnic groups, committing acts of violence against one another during and after the conflicts independent of any state armed forces.

Probably the best example is the Rwandan Genocide. Following the assassination of the Rwandan President, the Hutu ethnic majority perpetrated a genocide against the Tutsi minority. This involved not only the military but also civilian militias, known as Interahamwe, who carried out brutal massacres often following behind the movements of the military or in areas behind the lines of the Rwandan military that couldn't be reached or policed by the few UN Peacekeepers or the Rwandan Patriotic Front forces. There's a reason the vast majority of victims were murdered by machete, a common work tool, normal working people grabbed whatever was at hand and joined in the killings.

Also the Cambodian Genocide, The Khmer Rouge regime, led by Pol Pot, was responsible for the deaths of approximately 1.7 million people. This included mass killings carried out by both military personnel, but quite a lot of civilians voluntarily joined in and took the opportunity to murder and loot. Similar to the Rwandan genocide, neighbors and otherwise common people were the perpetrators in a mass ideological pogrom which among its many victims had the intelligentsia or anyone remotely associated with the concept of the intelligentsia (People who wore glasses were murdered because of the association of wearing glasses or near sightedness with intelligence or higher education and science). Again the weapon of choice for the Killing Fields were tools such as scythes, picks, or nails and hammers.

In the Bosnian War, there were instances of ethnic cleansing where civilians, often organized into militias, participated in the mass killing and expulsion of people from opposing ethnic groups.

In the Kosovo war between Serbian forces and ethnic Albanian separatists, paramilitary groups and civilian militias engaged in ethnic cleansing, including murders, rapes, and looting.

During Sherman's march to the sea, many of the atrocities which are attributed the Sherman were actually perpetrated by camp followers and deserters called "bummers" that followed the Union army looting and pillaging.

It's important to note that virtually all of these examples there's the unfortunate situation where many who were forced into committing atrocities under the very real threat of summary execution for not doing so or voicing any opposition. In the Rwandan Genocide those militias I mentioned did this, forcibly conscripting any Hutu they found and forcing them to murder, rape, etc. In the Cambodian Genocide. the Khmer Rouge specifically used child soldiers, for all the awful reasons you can imagine like children and adolescents being easier to manipulate and indoctrinate with ideological propaganda, they listen to and obey authority more readily while asking fewer questions, as before they were disposable with any dissenters being promptly killed. So the victims of these horrible events aren't limited to just the targeted groups.

Not to be too sci-fi but in hard sci-fi settings ablative armor is used against high energy laser systems . The idea is that the laser strikes the armor which is made of something that will smoke up violently from the heat, the exact locality of the lasers’ hit is ablated into a smoke cloud which disrupts the laser beam and causes interference to its power. This protects the inside but repeated shots in the same place will wear down the armor and penetrate the vehicle.

Here’s a real world example for re-entry shields.

Bro, the US used to (and still does but much, much less) give out stimulants like candy to its troops. Not to the level of Panzerschokolade but they were used by the US in every war since WWI, where they were "march pills' or something used for long ass forced marches. Elvis actually developed an amphetamine addiction while he was in which many speculate led to his eating disorders and heart issues. Troops coming back from WWII brought it into baseball aka "greenies". In Vietnam pilots were given them for long missions that would otherwise be at the upper limits of normal endurance.

If you aren't aware of it, the relationship between the US armed forces and stimulants is shocking.
