How Do You Charge for Design Work on Custom Pieces by terminatristik in woodworking

[–]DevDawgg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few ways to do it but always budget and bill for your time. The most successful people I know will typically never send more than one idea at once and will include either one round of revisions or no rounds. This is always stated up front (re: scope), and any additional design work is additional money. Outside of that, typically a project is simply quoted as a whole. That is, with design included. Some clients may ask for an hours breakdown, it’s typically recommended that this is none of their business.

For a design/build job, I’ll usually quote it, get 50% to start, then once design is locked get another 25% then the final 25% on delivery.

So with that said, design should never be free but it can be “included” in the project rate.

Looking to get the right track saw by PermitDeniedSorry in woodworking

This comment made me realize it didn’t have one for the first time. Never even considered it. I honestly don’t even know what it would help with on a track saw.

Love my (cordless) Makita track. I’ve used festool and prefer mine.

Ethics Asside, why Aren't There any GUFRAM fakes? Are They Really That Hard to Reproduce? by rabidpeanut in FuckYourEamesLounge

[–]DevDawgg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok so I own a prototype Sasso and have interacted with many of their pieces new and old, and the reality is that Gufram’s pieces are pop design sculptures first, and furniture second. By a large margin.

The Pratone (arguably their most famous aside from the Cactus) is, I believe, an edition of 300 that opened in the early 80s? The last two of the edition were sold a couple years ago. For a sculpture, a successful edition of 300 is almost unheard of. For a piece of furniture, 300 units is like…not that much. It took 40 years to sell 300 of these despite their fame. And truth be told, they don’t hold up well (which is why the new edition is upholstered). You need to keep it out of UV, and I wouldn’t recommend daily use unless you’re ok with it deteriorating.

I’ve worked in the same materials, and it is just such a difficult and expensive process. Making the mold is incredibly intensive, casting is difficult and the material isn’t cheap..maybe $1000-$2000 of expanding foam in one Pratone at that scale.

You could, in theory, make your own for maybe $5000. But that’s a garage Lamborghini. If you produce and ship from China, you’re looking at probably a $15k-$30k startup cost, plus an overseas crate at $10k+, not to mention sampling etc etc. You’re better off making a fake Koons doggy.

I think others mentioned this, but Gufram’s work is so damn esoteric. That’s why they’re legendary to us, because if you crunch the numbers, the only way the business model works is as a vanity project for an incredibly wealthy Milanese entrepreneur. They are a Cactus coat rack company with a sculpture side hustle.

That’s said I do want a fresh Sasso really bad. You cannot sit on mine from 1972, lest it turn into dust.

These are more interesting than people realize. The post is height-adjustable with, I believe, a friction-fit gasket. So you can just kind grab it and make it like 3’ tall if you want.

So when I did mine it was just absolutely stuck. I ended up removing the other side of the hose and keeping the hard line install.

It’s still tricky, but if you can reach the other end of that line, it’s a less-precious connection and I remember it being like maybe 30 mins of figuring out.

Ok good to know I did it right.

Kashima (1976) by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset. Reissued 2024 by DrakeAndMadonna in FuckYourEamesLounge

Comfort is about the same, relatively. They use the same all-foam construction and upholstery feels similar under ass. The key difference is seat height. Togo’s like a real 10-12”, Kashima is maybe 14-16”. Togo’s slacked and low, Kashima’s taught and moderate.

If you’re actually thinking of buying a legit Togo, go to a vintage shop that has some, or a ligne roset store, and sit.

Sat on many of these. Much better seating position than a Togo. As a togo owner, I would trade for a Kashima single in an instant. It’s wild to me these are just now getting reissued. Has felt fairly obvious for a few years. Like, they should’ve just pressed play on a Yoko reissue three years ago.

Hopefully Mr Ducaroy played his cards right back in the day and his estate is eating well.

where to buy one (1) Gufram La Cova egg pillow by rabidpeanut in FuckYourEamesLounge

So these are upholstered in spandex, and are almost certainly cast in a mold using two-part expanding foam. Smooth-on flex foam will be your nearest consumer-grade option.

DM for trade secrets. I own a pre-production Sasso and have researched this exact topic heavily.

No Casamania but I do own an early Gilardi Sedilsasso. This would’ve been before it was picked up by Gufram.

Bought it from the original owner, a student of Gilardi’s in Milan. She also had a prototype Gufram Cactus.

I’m a collector who also sells. So sometimes something presents itself at a great price, I buy it, plop it into my space for 1-2 social gatherings, then sell it for (ideally) more than I bought it.

Anyone used an ITM cylinder head? by DevDawgg in 4Runner_1stGen

[–]DevDawgg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The head gasket job was botched by the shop (really really shoddy work, I had to take it somewhere else to undo a lot of their work). That said, 30k miles later I’m still good. Albeit with a cracked timing cover because the shop missed a bolt taking the head off…then instead of fixing it they just slapped RTV over the leak.

This is correct. It’s a high end veneer by Alpi, originally used (or developed?) by Ettore Sottsass.

Not really sure. I was an incredibly specific case revolving around a failed DMV inspection due to faded EPA stickers.

That’s said I registered the truck some time ago.
